DefXagon by Rothens91

[raw]
made by Rothens91 for LD 39 (JAM)

This is a small game that we made for the jam. It's about defending your base, which has a protective shield, but with limited power. You can collect energy from fallen foes, and you can recharge your shield upon daytime (between waves). [You can do that by clicking the button in the top-left corner which appears in daytime]

You can play with it, basically it has an endgame condition (if the generator is destroyed, you loose), but it's far from the planned.

Controls: - Move with WASD - Shoot with left mouse button - Charge the shield upon daytime (you can see the arrival of the next wave on the top of the screen)

We have the following plans for the future - Buyable upgrades from the coins - More enemy types - Some kind of a story - Defensive structures (which could use the energy as well)

UPDATED: as @huvaakoodia pointed out, the music doesn't play. This seems to be an issue with wav playback, so I converted the background music to mp3, and now it works! Download the updated version here

This game is in serious need of a tutorial.

Nice little game. Cool enemy design is easy to distinguish the different types and guess their "relative power"
As a suggestion, I think that it would work better if the energy automatically recharge the shield, instead of being mapped to a button (unless you implemented the additional structures)

Really liked the graphics & the amount of enemy variations. Though I wasn't able to find out how to recharge the shield... maybe you should add the controlls and how to play in the description.

Nice graphics and a pretty cool idea, I couldn't work out how to recharge the shield. It might be worth putting in a tutorial or at least a page that shows the controls (or put them here?). Perhaps some enemy health bars too?

I like the enemy variety but they could do with a red outline or something just to highlight where they are. Maybe some alerts or something when they are attacking your shield. The gun effect is really nice too :)

This is a solid base for a tower defens-style game. Obviously you just go around and shoot enemies ATM (unless I missed something) but there are many types of units, that could be even more different than just movement speed (and maybe the damage they deal). There could be things like electric-biotic types, that you can use different kinds of ammunition on, they could have different type of armor etc.
The graphics is also very nice. I like the combination of this pixel/16 bit art with realtime lighting.
Also the shield could have functionalities, atm it seemed it is rather week. I would expect something like zap the enemies back or somthing in similar manner.
But i definitelly had some amount of fun here :) Good job!

977 points. Even managed to fight off some of the bigger hordes due to the increased amount of energy you get from dispatching more enemies.

Having to spam the shield recharge button is annoying. There is also a lack of content to keep me playing for longer, but you already have many things planned so I need not repeat them.

I didn't hear any audio even though the credits do have a listing for music. Is that a bug or simply a jam omission?

The graphics and lighting are quite nice.

Ok work this.

@huvaakoodia thanks for pointing out the missing music! I made an update about that.

1029! No idea how many waves that is :-)
Wish the game didn't let me pick up the blue energy pickups while my meter was already full.

Nice game, after the little trouble to understand how to play correctly.

Seems like a cool idea, but I really had no idea what was going on. Some instructions or controls would help a lot in knowing how to play.

Some of the night time monsters lit up and some didn't, even if they were the same type.
And I definitely got annoyed when my meter got full and I could still collect shards, so I had to try and run around them to get the most shield charge.

All in all this was a lot of fun, and the controls felt smooth. Mouse shooting was much better than I expected to get!

I would sometimes run under and sometimes over the tiles for the centre piece, which was confusing. Overall I had fun and smashed a lot of mobs. Love to see it when theres more to do!

It's an interesting game, I couldn't figure out in what the day phase was useful, I had no idea of what I could do during it, but the night time is pretty fun, I would have love to upgrade my weapon and shoots, maybe improve my ROF, have bouncing bullets or anything, it's too bad that there is not sound because you can't really tell what you are doing without signs or feedbacks.

Hey guys! Thanks for the tons of feedbacks, I'll try to fix your found issues!

@sumgamstudio you actually can play, since it's a jar file, and it can be run with Java installed

I think this is a very good idea for the theme, however the execution feels a smidge weak. I hoped I could turn instantly, but the turning circle made grabbing collectables difficult.

Great game ! I love the art, greatly done. Simple gameplay, easy to get in, like the art of the tanks, remind me of the old NES classic. Nice job !
