Genus Perditum by Baconinvader

[raw]
made by Baconinvader for LD 40 (JAM)

Descend as far down as you can, fighting monsters and buying equipment. Be careful though, because the more coins you have, the stronger the monsters get. Sorry about the name, it sounded cool when we first came up with it. All criticism is very welcome, no matter how honest.

Used: Python 3.6 Pygame cx_freeze (python to exe converter) FL Studio Paint.net sfxr

NOTE: Version 1.0.1 of the game was released BEFORE the deadline, during the submission hour.

I like the overall concept for the game, but the floaty controls make it kind of hard to enjoy. I got stuck being bounced between multiple enemies without much agency about it.

It seems like a pretty feature complete product which is always a big accomplishment, but the controls makes the movement feel very slippery.

Overall concept is good but control and movement is super tricky.

@chem0pren @iamtalin @vovin thank you all for your feedback! I agree that the movement was VERY slippery, I definitely need to work on that in the future

**Overall, I thought it was a good game!**

Some notes I had:
* Controls are a little slide-y for my personal liking. But that's just me.
* Overall a good concept, I enjoyed it.

Overall though, I enjoyed it! Thanks for participating!

Nice game! Really liked you did it with python. Did you used any kind of framework/engine or pure python with some libraries??

Got an error when closed the app. Just to notify the bug or know if it's a problem with my pc :cold_sweat:

@Josef21296 Thanks for the compliment! :)
I made the game using the Pygame library, but the engine I made myself. As for the bug, it's nothing to do with your PC, It's just an error that occurs when you quit pygame which I haven't fixed yet. I was sort of worried during the Jam that if I changed the code cx_freeze would refuse to compile it.

7zip gives an error trying to unzip the file. I found I could get it to work be renaming it to a .rar though.

The controls felt very unresponsive to me making it a bit hard to get into.

I played for a bit while. I looks interesting but I somehow frustrating due to the floating movement and bounce against the monsters, which makes me lose control. Besides in the shopoing menu it says handgun ammunition but I have a rifle... After all hope we can see it later as it's fun.

I like the idea of not collecting coins especially when the effect is that it makes the enemies harder to deal with. I was not sure how I attacked since I have a mouse targeting system making it look like there should be a projectile that I can shoot by right-clicking but in reality I have a melee weapon, which is something I enjoy more than shooting at targets, except I did not realize I had to move into the enemies to attack them. Might I suggest having some sort feedback like flashing enemies or a "hit" sound that gives a sense of "yeah! I got him!" :D
