Rise Of Robos by Suboptimalplay

[raw]
made by Suboptimalplay for LD 41 (COMPO)

This game was made for Ludum Dare 41. The theme was "Combine 2 incompatible genres". It's the first game I've ever made and everything is made from scratch ,if you couldn't tell :)

Rise of Robos is a "Platformer Colony Sim" where the player must gather enough materials for their colony to grow. The game is won when the colony population reaches 20.

Some important notes:

  • New Robots will spawn when the required resources are available.

  • Existing robots will periodically consume resources. If those resources are not available they will die.

  • As the game progresses, more expensive robots will spawn. At first robots will require only metal. Later they will require metal and wood. The most expensive robots will require metal, wood, and meat.

CONTROLS:

  • "A" and "D" to move left and right

  • "Space" to jump. Press twice to double jump.

  • "Enter" to shoot

NOTE: There is a known issue with audio. Background songs may overlap if you remove focus from the game and return to it.

Nice, jumping to get wood was a little tricky due to lagginess. I think that I had too much wood available at the time.

I like the genres you selected and the way you combined them. They work really well together. The theme and implementation are funny. I have two suggestions though. The game responds well to controls, but the buttons are a bit weird. You might want to select other buttons. And the level design could be a bit more thought through. Overall, a nice first game.

That's a great start and a good idea! I think the concept works pretty well. I'm sad that the game does not have a little more depth and challenge. I got to the end of it basically running the same loop over and over again until my population reached the cap.

Congratulations on your first game! As it is, the game boils down to running back and forth between the three resource places. That's a pity, since you've created quite a lot of mechanics that look promising for making the game more strategically interesting.
