Electric Castle by Mr Marcgenesis

made by Mr Marcgenesis for LD 39 (JAM)

Welcome to my first Ludum Dare!

You are an eye - don't ask why - stuck in the Electric Castle. Unfortunately for you, your energy depletes as you walk, so keep an eye on your energy bar (see what I did there?). Better watch out for those nasty spikes too - pointy things normally don't play well with eyeballs.

This game is so hard lol :D
But really fun.
I like the graphics too.
Since level 3 it gets so much harder.
And in some levels i dont get the point of collecting the energy orbs ^^

@jose-alvim and @domrein : I fixed the link... turns out I didn't made the game "public" on itch.io. Rookie mistake.

Well made but it might just be impossible.

Good game! Don't really like the sound effect for when you die though, it's a little harsh.

Had fun! It gets hard really fast, but in a good way. The sounds used in the music makes me really nostalgic, it kinda gets that vibe from the good old Adlib days. Great job

I had to give up on Level 5, it got a little bit too hard for me with the bouncy pads. But I love the main character and the platforming controls are very tight.

Level 5 requires super precise timing. I know it's hard to make a good difficulty curve in 48 hours but WOW.

Looks fun but its so frustrating when you step on a bug

It's tough. But fair, I think. And really fun, after level 3 things start getting interesting

Thanks everyone! The game gets quite difficult at level 5, but there are only 6 levels... and level 6 is more puzzle than timing. Although since you are running out of power I guess the whole game should be considered a "timed puzzle"!

Hey @krathya, any more information on the bug? Would love to fix it for future updates.

@connorses, I completely agree... I had soccer tonight with the kids and didn't have time to change level 5 afterwards before the submission time was over. I would have probably made it a bit easier :(

Then again, in a small game like that, having one very tough level - that you can win - makes for a proud moment :)

This was a lovely game! I really liked the music (though I felt like it could do with some volume balancing) and the graphical style of the game. The gameplay felt solid and really smooth. One minor thing I found was that I sometimes got stuck in one of the boost pads in level 5 (I think it was level 5... The "Boing boing" one). It didn't break the game or anything, but it was just slightly inconvenient for the timing in said level.

Other than that, you did a great job on the game!

Thanks for the feedback @snowy! I uploaded a fix for the bouncing pad and adjusted the music volume at the same time. Keep in mind that the desktop version is more balanced. No clue why the HTML5 version doesn't behave the same.

I love this. I must say, though, the eyeball exploding when it hits the spikes is one of the most grisly things ever. Anyway, great combination of simple mechanics into a more complex emergent game (and I'm crazy about that background)!

It's a very cool game, but one problem for me it's the music it's to loud (i play in the html5 version), and when you finish a level, the music of victory mix with the music of the game, and this it's kinda annoying, but it's a pretty good game, and it's very hard xD.

Great fun. The way obstacles were positioned to provide a challenge was quite interesting. The details in the end were well drafted, to force a new game. Congratulations.

Ps .: Maybe a button to mute the music or to decrease the volume. The sound was too loud x.x

@branquelo the HTML5 version is not balanced at all. For whatever reason, the sounds behave differently than in the desktop version :(

Cool game, loved the introduction levels they are great to learn how to play the game. I liked how the player are not allowed to make a mistake otherwise he will die. Its is pretty challenging which is good, the sounds are well made, great game !

I like the idea of having just enough energy to complete a level :) My main issue is that some events might be a bit too slow and break the rythm of the game, such as the blue areas or the delay at the end of a level.

Simple platformer, however well designed. Energy and boost for each level is greatly balanced. Levels later are hard, but you need just patience. Good humour and puns. I don't understand end screen tho, saying how many boosts I collected. I thought, they are just for survival, not the collectibles for top score, therefore I just left them aside. Taking into consideration you were doing solo and it was your first game jam, it's solid entry.

Excellent game, I had trouble on level 5, but from what I saw the art was simplistic but well suited, and the particles were nice. I only wish the player moved a bit faster to keep up with the game, but overall very well done.

ok this is *lovely*! Very very fun, in an old-school difficulty way which I love. I appreciated the DOS shareware era graphics. The levels were where you shine! Level design was amazing. Have you perhaps spent hours and hours in mario maker? :D

Level titles were a *very* nice touch too, not many games do that nowadays! All in all, a great entry (I now officially hate ceiling spikes :D )

Some of those levels near the end were extremely tricky considering the beginning of the game was super easy. Not that I'm complaining I love difficult and challenging games! The graphics do a good job and setting the mood, reminds me of games I used to play on those "1001 Games" on a single CD. Really solid game play too, everything felt smooth and I had didn't have a problem with the controls what so ever. Really solid entry, great fun! :D

Very nice! I had fun playing your game, the level design is well done. And I love your tone, very casual, very enjoyable. Loved the fact there was different ways to get energy back also, power-management was really something to look after. Nice job!

Nice little platformer! You do a great job explaining the game in the early levels - that's great to have in a jam game. The boing boing level was super hard but I managed to beat it and then the mirror level was trivial... not sure what thats about. You've got some great mechanics to play with in this game though, I see a lot of interesting levels being possible.

Hey! I didn't realise this was your first LD as well! Congrats, you too should be very proud of your first Jam! :wink:It's got a nice bit of everything, from music to graphics to gameplay. I could almost certainly see myself playing it on Newgrounds or Miniclip from back a few years ago. I'm sure overall it could do with some polish, but hey, practice makes perfect!
