Basketball Wars by Samuel Henderson

[raw]
made by Samuel Henderson for LD 41 (JAM)

I created this basketball cross first-person-shooter for my first Ludum Dare. I had a lot of fun making it and it would be greatly appreciated if you could rate it. Just try to hold back the criticism for the graphics - I'm not an artist. Use WASD or the arrow keys to move and when you get close enough to the hoop press space to slam dunk.

Hey, For the first entry your game is great! And Art is not bad at all! I mean I'm a coder only and I suck with art too, but you did hella well in my opinion! the only thing that kinda annoyed me a little is that enemies spawn out of my point of view, so sometimes I die without even knowing from where I got hit. Well, there are always room for improvement! Good job!

Don't be that sad about the art, it's not the worst! I think this has a lot of potential. However, I didn't far in the game before one lousy player decided it was time to slide a knife in my back >:(

The art is really unique! I love it! I agree with others on here though that it can be frustrating have the enemies spawn right in front of me or just outside my view. Awesome game though!

Why did you opt-out humor category? I had a good chuckle with the defeat sound  The game is really unfair, adversary players come out from nowhere!

Run diagonally, clearing one of the enemy flanks. Get close enough to the hoop. Rinse and repeat.

Kept getting stabbed in the back (literally) but when I finally scored I was so happy! I can see this becoming a popular game actually, like rocket league.

The 3D assets were fine!

But the UI was quite a problem. The instructions had little contrast and were hard to read being right in front of the hoop (I played full screen - I realise it's fine at embedded resolution). Couldn't read all of it the first time either because I had to click into the game after all. It's missing the space bar instruction too, but I did figure that out without reading the description here!

I like that you are differentiating different kills.

The death/restart loop was a bit too long for how easily you get stabbed down.

@yinyin I didn't test the game in full screen which I realize now was a problem. Thanks for the feedback

Let me begin by saying that I love the graphics! Simple, yet beautiful! Also the sounds are very funny, though maybe some sort of sound track could've helped to set the mood. The idea is good and I love the mechanics. However the seemingly random spawning of enemies ultimately is a bit frustrating, since all of the sudden one of them might spawn right behind you/on top of you thus killing you near instantly. Other than that very well executed, and extremely good job for a first LD entry!

@tiberon thanks man! I'll try to add some background music next time. Thanks for playing

The important thing here is to finish in the deadline of the Ludum. You did your first entry and at least, you have a game, that is what it matters!

I feel pretty unfair that enemies spawn because I dont have time to avoid them (I dont really know where they are! xD). Perhaps you should try to trick the players spawning the enemies far for him (or in a safe radius)

It's important to have time to "polish" the game, for example, you could use another font for the in-game text, or the spawning enemies system.

Anyway, you made a game in 72 hours alone, that is an amazing job so... good job!

Hope we will see in next ludum dares!

@ethereal-psyche-games I will try to fix the spawning in a future update and I agree polishing is important. I will definitely be in the next LD. Thanks for the feedback :)

Congrats on your first submissions! Game is solid and the art does the job it needs to. As others have stated, the enemy spawning is unfair to the player. Very nice idea and decently implemented.

I don't mind the graphics, and well done on getting something finished. I think my main criticism was having the random enemies that you couldn't see, felt a bit unfair. But it was a really good take on the theme, and I did manage to score in the end

Neat idea! I died A LOT when I first played. It's a bit tough to judge where people are coming from. Felt like I was getting stabbed in the back/side a lot. Maybe spawn less guys and from further away but have them move a bit faster. I felt a bit overwhelmed by the opponents.

When I finally did manage to dunk it, I felt pretty good haha. I had to slide along the left side and hope RNG was on my side.

Congrats on getting the game done!

Quite a unique concept! Having enemies be able to spawn right against the back wall did mean that I got backstabbed quite a lot. Good job!

@derek-wilson thanks! I also try to go down the left as much as possible and I will try to fix the spawning issue. Thanks for playing!

Not a bad little game! I'm not sure what you used to make the 3D Models but if you want to improve the quality in the future a quick improvement would be to increase your polygon count on round objects (like the basketball) and add bevels to hard edges like on the gun. Graphics aside though, your game is fun, so good work 👍

@weekend-panda @noumenus It is a bit tricky but I didn't want it to be a walkover. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for taking the time to play it :)

I found it a bit difficult, but I understand it's a matter of balancing. It seems to me that I was stabbed in the back, this could be improved, because there is nothing the player can do about it.
But overall I liked the idea. Good luck!

Congratulations on finishing your first jam!

Enemy spawning could use some work, they often seem to spawn right next to or even on top of me without giving me any time to react. The mouse movement also feels really weird and could be refined. It might also be a bit better in a third person/top down view so you can see all the enemies.

For all it's faults, it's actually a fun game. The challenge is high enough that, when you actually manage to dunk, you feel accomplished. After you learn how to survive longer than 2 seconds (hint: strafe!), you feel the desire to push the envelope of just how long you can survive before dunking.

Great Job!

Very fun I tried 4 times, and finally I reached the basket and i win ! Maybe you can add an other dimension to be easier, like when you do combo of shoot you will be more fast. Good job and graphism is enough

I really liked the difficulty and concept. It could have a bit more content but it's a good base for a game.
