Haunted Mansion by coldmoose

[raw]
made by coldmoose for LD 41 (COMPO)

For LD41, I tried to mash a sandbox/building theme with a survival horror theme. The result was the original sounding title, "Haunted Mansion", where you try to avoid the ghosts that destroy the surrounding area. I decided to try making the game isometric which ended up taking more time than I would have liked.

You need to avoid the ghosts, but the catch is they are invisible. They also destroy and modify the ground so it is more difficult to escape. You move faster on the building tiles so you'll want to stay indoors. You can place tiles to get out of tight spots but be careful not to run out.

Enjoy!!

(not sure how to post the screenshots here so just imagine they are here and they look good)

Hi unfortunately I can't rate this because it complains about all these missing DLLs, it looks like you need to redistribute lua, sdl, and maybe a few other DLLs with your EXE

@morphine thanks for the heads up, fixing it now

EDIT: should be fixed now

I can't manage to launch the game. It is missing several dll files that should come with the love file. (And I can't find the source to build it myself)

Cool game! Not sure how the ghosts work but I still had fun ^^

Nicely done! It was really nice to break the walls to escape from the ghost, and I love that you run faster on floor. Makes for a nice mechanic.

I would probably make it more clear where the holes are (I didn't understand that the brown dirt tiles were holes my first 2 playthroughs) and also add some kind of background when you're showing the ending text because it's completely white and very hard to read over the game colors.

Well done for making this in 2 days!

@coldmoose yes, it's working for me now, trying it out and will report back.

@coldmoose - still playing but the white text when you die is impossible to read if you are positioned poorly - for anyone else, it's right click to replay

@coldmoose - another thing - where you place is not indicated by your mouse pointer, it's actually placing slightly below your mouse pointer, like whatever your mouse pointer's "body" is over but not the point itself

Took me a couple of tries to figure it out, but damn how did you came up with this?! :p

Congrats on the entry!

I'm like a parent, I ended up staying in the mansion following ghosts around and cleaning up behind them. I did find you had to click a bit above where you want a tile in order to place it, which was a bit unintuitive.

Cool idea. The click positioning for adding blocks was a little off, as people have said. It would be cool if there could be, like, a flash of lightning every once in a while to reveal the ghosts. It would also be cool if it weren't just survival, but if you could collect treasure or reach a particular place or something like that. Calling your game link "Source code" on this page isn't clear. Also, to get the images to show up, put an exclamation point before the image links.

Interesting concept! I like the dynamic isometric view and the cool day/night effect. I would have preferred some indication of the ghosts rather than them being invisible. The holes don't show up very clearly as well, I guess due to the isometric style, and the gameover text could be more clear as already mentioned above. Otherwise, that was a cool take on survival horror!

@dob I planned on having the ghosts visible when it was night, but of course didn't have the time. Thanks for the feedback on this page as well since I have no clue how to format anything!

I like this concept! My only problem really was not being able to see the ghost, but I get what you were going for. Good job!
