Type Skater by Swarrly

[raw]
made by Swarrly for LD 41 (COMPO)

Typing meets skateboarding. Hitting killer trick requires hitting all the right keys. ScreenShot1.png

I finally have time to write a proper description.

It's basically tony hawk meets typing game. To do tricks you hit space bar. Out in the open you do a simple ollie and if you hit space near objects you do the trick associated with them. When the trick starts a typing challenge pops up and you have to complete all the words to get points for the trick.

I would have loved to have all the words be skater themed however most skater words are either too short or too long so I had to fill out the word list with some standard words to try to keep the difficulty from getting out of control. If I had more time I would have like to separate the word list into difficulty so I could ramp up the challenge or add a combo mechanic. I also had to cut the sound and music do to time constraints.

All in all this is my first ludum dare entry that I am really proud of. I hope you all enjoy it.

I wish the words were skateboarder themed, or if the words were the moves! Like typing 'Double Barrel Roll'

A little too hard, maybe you should make a progressive difficulty ? The concept is well thought and quite well executed !
It lacks sounds though :/

Overall cool game, keep coding :)

An interesting concept here, Maybe the timer is just a little too fast, or maybe if the words where a little larger I would have done better, rather than straining to see what they were before I typed!
certainly looks really nice and anything that is skateboard themed is great in my opinion, but I don't think i successfully landed a thing!
I will give this another go when I have a bit more time to recover from the weekend!

The concept was fun. The graphics were nice. I agree the timer was a little fast, I type at ~85 WPM and was just barely passing the tricks with 5 words, maybe difficulty settings? Overall, great job.

Tough typing challenge! I wish I was cool enough to do any of that tricks (ironically, my game is about typing too =) ). Also, this pixel art visuals are amazing!

Congrats on finishing the game. You need music and sound, that would really improve the quality of the game

It's cool, and I look forward to replay this if you fix the difficulty curve. there's too many words for such little time, and some of them are too long. Also the font size should be bigger and the colour scheme more clearer when you go over the rock path or the yellow stripes (maybe you could change the word window to an opaque background?)

Awesome game! :) Art is super nice, mechanic is fun and challenging. I got quite a few nice tricks! :)
You should be proud if this, regardless of it being your first entry! Cause it doesn't look like it!^^
(Shame there weren't some basic audio effects!)

219 points! I'm usually okay a typing but I sort of panicked every time I went to do a trick. Nice idea, good combination of gameplay mechanics. A little bit of audio would've help with the scatter mood though.

I'm not sure I can add anything new that hasn't already been said. Sound and Music are key to a good game. Your art is amazing though, and the difficulty is a bit on the high side but difficulty balance is something I struggle with myself. I'm just no good at typing even though I've been using a computer for a very long time! The other points mentioned in the comments valid and learning from them will help you improve. For a first entry this is pretty top notch, my first entry was total crap! So congrats on completing and submitting your first LD game! Hope to see you in the next LD in August.

Really good combo of themes. I hated every time "representative" popped up on the screen, but I was able to get it a few times and felt like I accomplished something difficult. Art and UI were clear and understandable from the get-go, which often isn't the case with top-down games in jams. Good work!

Love the concept, it was a bit too hard? (for me anyway) nice graphics though! Good job on finishing the game!

OK so this is a good and original idea in theory, in practice your game is WAY TOO HARD OMG ^^# I ragequitted after like 2 mins ^^# In terms of mechanics I wonder if the space button was really needed - how about whe you hit a rale or bench or whatnot the game goes to "tricks mode" automatically? I also found the graphics a bit poor - sorry for being a downer, thanks for sharing nonetheless and better luck next time :-D
