Funk Escape by Rolle
FUNK ESCAPE
The sonic robots on planet Boaring has had enough! For too long we have been enslaved and forced to play horrible elevator music to power the Omegadev industries. We secretly assembled the star ship boombox9, fueled by Funk Power(tm). We take off in the night to flee to the border of the Omegadevs empires reach. Only then will we be free.
This game will test your multitasking skills, the left side of the screen is a rhythm/timing section where you need to press the corresponding keys at the right time - this will increase your Func PowerTM, the current available FP is visible between the sections. The right side is a classic Shoot 'em up where you need to avoid the asteroids or use your Func PowerTM to shoot them.
* Hard * you say? * Difficult * you think? Well, maybe, at first. But an avid 💪 player should be able to finish the game in about 1 minute. Can you do it?? 🙃 Are you Funky enough? 🎶🎼🕺💃🔮
(please note we have only tested the game on recent Chrome browsers)
Controls: Keyboard and/or Mouse
Rythm-game on the left:
* Q * = Blue
* W * = Green
* E * = Red
* R * = Yellow
Schmup on the right:
* Cursor keys to control *
* SPACE * to fire
* OR use MOUSE + Left Mouse to fire *
We did a mashup of a Rythm Game and Shoot-em-up!
Using JavaScript (Phaser) coded with Visual Studio Code + Atom.
Music by @sawtan using Ableton and his hardware stuff + Incredibox.

I liked the music track, and just like @hanra I kept trying to hear the totality of it. (though my time was way longer than a minute ^^).
But it was worth it because the unicorn!
I am usually not good at playing video games but this one made me go to the end, so I really enjoyed!
Are you using only keyboard or are you playing with keyboard + mouse?
Thanks for the kind comment!
Striking the balance of "just hard/easy enough" is always a challange!
Glad you like the :unicorn: , it was actually just a placeholder at first but it stuck somehow.
The clear distinct sounds for the red, green and yellow notes make them easy to hear and press the right button at the right time for, but for me the blue note was not as clear. Beats like the one in the picture below are perfect for this game, clear, catchy, easy to remember, meaning players can do the rhythm part by ear and focus more on the shoot em up aspect.

So if the rhythm section is easier, the shoot em up section could be made more interesting, maybe add some enemies that shoot you, make the asteroids move at different speeds, or maybe have a system where the more funk power you have the more enemies/asteroids there are.
The pixelshader at the end is awesome! :D
We tried to make the game not to hard but it seems some people still have difficulty with it. A lot of our testers (friends/family) actually thought it was too easy...not easy to please all! ;-)
Finding the balance between too hard/just enough was a bit hard. Hmm, perhaps we should have made it even easier in the beginning. But fine tuing requires time, this we had not. =)
We had some interesting times trying the game on different friends/family but after a couple of tries most of them managed to get to the end. But more fine tuning would probably have been better... If only we had a time machine. :satellite_orbital: Thanks for playing!
And we can assure you that we had top scientist, professors and musicians performing tests and other important stuff in labs wearing white coats (also safety goggles) who came to the conclusions: Yes, by George, this tune is FUNKY!
@sawtan wrote and recorded the music, I'll check if he has some link to it... :-) :musical_note:
It seems maybe our tests are not fine tuned enough and we perhaps made the game a tad too difficult too fast, so thanks for the info. We will consider it on our next game! :champagne:
Mouse input seemed a little janky as the clicks sometimes didn't work; also not sure how you are doing your audio sync but it seemed to be prone to desyncs if anything went wrong (e.g. if the window ever lost focus). Other than that, neat concept.
Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional
The rhythm section can be managed by ear. Seeing the blocks in the peripheral vision is also enough to do well, not that I can ace the tricker parts or anything.
The shmup side of things is way too simple. Dodging is a breeze and shooting only makes is easier as there doesn’t seem to be much of a downside to it. Enemies shooting towards the player would have heightened the tension by quite a lot.
I’m guessing the ship moves faster with more Funk Power in the tank as my second playthrough finished in 3 minutes rather than 4, but I couldn't see (or feel) an increase in the actual speed. What's going on with that?
Ok work in all.
