Shadowscape by Gonz0

[raw]
made by Gonz0 for LD 41 (JAM)

Fixed pixel shadows on webgl, now super shiny, also doesnt throw exception on level 9

A space flight sim / puzzle game. Guide your ship to match the shadows . Test your flight skills and depth perception! Some say it's meditative, others say it's hard as hell yet no sentient being has yet to ever realize LEVEL 42!2018-04-24 060256-.png2018-04-24 030320-.png

I did not understand what to do at first, but figuring out what to do is beautiful in itself. Good music and a cool experience in general!

Very unique idea, liked it a lot! It was good to play and to listen to the music before going to bed.

Wow. That is amazing. Such a good idea, trippy visuals and nice music, I'm beyond jealous.

I couldn't figure out what to do so I just floated around for a bit and it was very pretty. Though the controls could use a tune up. It kind of sucked when a hit the edge because my camera went through it and showed me that it as just a cube with render textures so I would apply a force on the camera when it gets to close toward the center of the box. Though I couldn't solve any of the puzzles I still had fun playing it. I also made challenging game if you want to give it a shot I would very much appreciate it. edit: Nevermind I figured it out holy shit thats cool great job.

Man, you should correct your entry type to "WebGL" instead of "Windows"!

It's so trippy, I loved it. Very hard to solve the puzzles though.

Very unique game! I really enjoyed the experience. I was able to match up a few of the puzzles after a while.

Great job

Great work! The music really fit the visuals. As others mentioned, movement was a bit difficult to get use to at first. One suggestion I had was maybe easing players into the game by first giving them only a set axis of movement and then gradually unlocking the full range?

Great relaxing experience, i had a lot of fun with it(until it crashed, but that's ok).
Occasional really pixelated patterns is pretty hard to do, i don't know if frustration is a good thing for such a meditative game.

Becoming 'good' at doing this was a very surreal experience. This would make a great VR game. (I had to stop at the wobbly one, started to make me a bit seasick!)

This is an interesting concept - kind of reminds me of mindfulness drawing books. Music was great and fit the visuals perfectly! The movement was challenging, but I would say that was a bonus. It forced me to pay attention and kept my focus on the task.

Awesome job!

@Ongomato. Thanks man, yeah it's not really suited to webgl, the download is a bit shinier, although some of the shadows are unfinished due to time constraints.

I played webgl version and got exception after cube with giraffe and elephant. But this is nice trippy game with slightly floaty controls, even if webgl did not give me the best experience.

I made a GIF of me playing this, but giving anything away from this game would definitely ruin the sense of accomplishment you feel after beginning and solving that first puzzle. I loved the sound, totally helped with the whole trance vibe. Although, now that I have stopped, and am looking normally at the world, my head hurts a little. Thanks for a great game.

Whoa, it's a very relaxing game, i really love the GFX and audio, congrats!
You should definitively make a VR game out of this prototype, it's a perfect fit for a hardware allowing you to "move in game by moving your head in real life".

Wow, that was so trippy. The controls are a bit too floaty which I can no longer decide if that is good or bad. It took me sometimes to understand how the keys and mouse were affecting my view but it became easier as soon as it is figured out. Nice idea and implementation and the music was so fitting. Great job.

26. Apr 2018 · 05:13 UTC
Interesting concept, but I felt that the controls were a bit too unwieldy for me to really get any meditative aspects out of it. I liked the idea someone mentioned earlier of moving it to VR
🎤 Gonz0
26. Apr 2018 · 13:55 UTC
@Team-Infernus Yeah space controls are difficult! Not many find the ascend , descend controls intuitive, I was considering using the mouse wheel to ascend/descend. Maybe make it a little less floaty too, also webgl can get laggy on older machines as those real-time shadows are expensive!

Man, I love this kinda thing. I'd play this just to chill and watch the colors, but adding the puzzle dynamic made it that much better. Great work on this.

Controls were intuitive once I finally understood them, same with the premise, although it's super psychedelic and trippy, and the music really adds to to that atmosphere. I agree with the others in that you should totally make vr version, although I wouldn't play it because I think I'd die. Very nicely done, clever premise. Only major thing I'd improve is perhaps the difficulty scaling and the leniency and/or some tutorialisation, which given it' an LD entry is totally understandable to not have

Thanks for watching me stream this at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames.

I have no words for this game. It was surreal and the sound and imagery were excellent. I normally try to offer a bit of constructive criticism with these reviews, but this game is so unique that I have no idea how to improve it.

Omg, I love this! Awesome combination of genres, controls are intuitive, and the puzzle concept is just great. I love that it's so trippy too! This is one of my favourite entries so far. Awesome job!

Very very cool! My only complaint is I wish there was more guidance in-game until you beat the first level, since it's easy to forget the controls and the objective when you're disoriented from being thrown in the scapescape.

This is so cool!!! Amazing audio and visuals; really curious as to how you coded the animations. I'm not clear on how I'm supposed to "win", I'm supposed to make all the shadows black but I'm not sure what the shadows are? Anyways, very meditative, 10/10 would meditate to.

Love the idea! It's very simple and elegant, and probably it's really easy to crank out new levels. Just let the player find the projection point! ;) Sound and the atmosphere was a mix of chill and engaging and once I have figured it out it became quite addictive. Polybius anyone? ;) The only thing I couldn't get used to was the mouse look for some reason. I would have enjoyed it much better had there been the usual FPS-style mouselook.

@PhilStrahl hey Thanks for the review!,Im glad you got used to the controls, they could use a little work. It means a lot to get a thumbs up from a LD veteran like yourself, much obliged. I am considering making it into a game, and I do need to release my first game so why not? Sorry about all the wobbles I was trying to morph the geo slowly, but messed up the lerp, I fixed that now as it could potentially cause some seizures in people.Once again dude many thanks, keep up all the good work ,you produce some awesome content!

@angela-he Thanks angela hope you got it eventually. The animations are just shadows cast from 2 lights, one matches your pos , the other is the sweet spot you must find.Glad you liked the music, if you're ever looking for any custom music for your work let me know if I can help at all! Thanks again!
