Blackout by blobo

[raw]
made by blobo for LD 39 (COMPO)

The power has gone out, and everyone is fighting over what remains like savages. Our hero, Proto, will try to survive as long as possible in an endless dungeon crawler, in which you get weaker as you progress. Every enemy you kill takes Experience away, resulting in the player Leveling Down. Every attack also consumes power.

Controls:

W A S D: Run.

Mouse: Shoot Weapon.

Shoot Items to pick them up.

Escape: Pause.

Shoot doors four times to open them.

Wow that was fun ! The adaptative sountrack is super cool, I particularly the enemy design. What item does is a bit unclear because of the (cool) mess in the game, but it was fun anyway.

love the tutorial page :)

/ damn those jumping enemies!

(pretty playable - though I'm playing somewhere quiet right now and feel self-conscious about clicking as many times as is required, so quit out after a minute :P )

Great job! really enjoyed this and the soundtrack stuck in my head. I couldn't figure out what the items did but still had a blast playing.

This is a really nice game, and the enemy mechanics are pretty nice, and challenging. Also, the audio in this game really boosts the experience. Nice job overall.

It's pretty hard to get the hang of this game, especially with the pace at which you have to move at - but it was a lot of fun getting further and further with each try. I really like that you have to avoid enemies/using your attacks; it's a clever idea. I also love the enemy designs (they're really well-animated, too)! Great work!

Good game.

The movement of the player seemed fluid and I liked the way it goes slower as the player loses power/health.
The enemies were I think, what catched most of my eyes, they are challenging but not make the game frustrating to play, and that balance you achieved there is a great achievement for the project.
Really liked the art, simple and solid, perfect for this type of game.
The music was nice, but what got me to make it a winning point for the game was the nice touch you added when the player is dying, the slower effect.

There's no really downsides just a design opinion, I wish you could improve the tutorial page, as well as some color choices that make some colors (yellow if I remember) a bit repetitive.

Anyway, it is a awesome game, and I can't wait to see your next projects!

First thing I noticed was the awesome background music. Its nice to see that you had time to compose something and I think it really helped to make this game a lot better that if it was just silent. Having the music slow down and get distorted was a really nice touch and is a great way to provide the player with some feedback on their current status, especially since the game is a little too hectic for me to monitor the health bar. The design of the enemies were great and pretty funny as well. I like how you made the camera move slightly in the direction of the player's movement too. It made moving around feel a lot more dynamic and interesting. Overall an amazing game!

Wow that was intense! The gameplay was very exciting and the controls / movement were responsive. I loved all the enemy variety, and I'm also a sucker for procedural dungeons! The music was a great touch, and I love how you incorporated the music as another means of player feedback. Good job!

The graphics are amazing and the music is very good as well. The tutorial page reminded me of those old DOS games, which I liked. SFX were definitely missing though.

The gameplay itself was a bit too fast-paced for my taste. I felt like I had to rush through everything and it all moved so fast that I got a bit dizzy. I loved how the soundtrack adjusted though, very nice touch.

Overall I enjoyed it, but I wish it was a bit slower. Great work though.

Very good use of music (and great music)! Loved the enemies design, graphics, the controls, and gameplay.

I don't really know what could be improved here ahah... maybe some sound effects when you hit an enemy or level down?

My highest rated game so far. Good job!

An endless dungeon crawler... That's a new one for me, I really like it though. And I'm very impressed with the variety and randomness of it all. The graphics are clean, and really effective in achieving that 2.5D look. Considering this was made in 2 days as a compo entry, I'm amazed. The UI is simple and everything works as expected. There is even items and inventory. It just feels very fleshed out. And like the idea of moving backwards in levels as you power down is new to me. It's kind of got a running out of time feel to it, and I think that suits the theme perfectly. Well done.

Pretty fun overall, I loved the enemy designs (although I apparently can't rate you on your graphics). Making the music slow down as the player ran out of power was a good idea! I think it could have been balanced by maybe forcing a recharge square pseudorandomly, since you can end up without good items to start off with fairly often. Good work though!

Proto is my new hero!
Let me guess, did you play the Binding of Isaac? I don't know why but I recall something in the way monsters looks! XD
I love the way the music slow down when you lost too much power!
Basically it is an awesome game, good work! :)

A good game, was filled with action!! Didn't quite get the power up system at a first glance and it took a second play through before i understood it, but apart from me being a noob the game was fun!

I made a short video while playing this game and four other games, feel free to view it if you want :)

I like the idea of a fast pace dungeon crawler. The game was really fun. The enemies didn't feel like they had to much help or were frustrating. It could have used some sound effects but besides that it was really good.
