Decaying Card Game by filippy

[raw]
made by filippy for LD 39 (COMPO)

Fight the waves of enemies by playing cards.

Every card you play will wear down a bit and be shuffled back into your deck.

dcg.gif

How useless can your cards become before you are overrun by the horde?

(I would love to know how many turns you managed to survive so let me know in the comments! thank you!)

Controls: Drag Cards into the board with your mouse.

This was made With Unity, Gimp and https://dabuttonfactory.com/

For some very basic tweens I used http://dotween.demigiant.com/

Update: I figured how to port to webGL/ host on itch.io so that's avaiable now, also removed some unused assets from the project to improve download size.

I don't quite understand the connection to the theme but it's a nice concept.

Really fine idea, game can be better with improved visuals. At first I thought It would be no problem to beat the game but wrong choices ended me quick :D Also when I lose all my lives game stuck, should be an error there. But all in all a good game.

Cool concept for a combo of card game and defender. Felt like maybe it was TOO easy, but maybe I was just getting incredibly lucky on the cards? I could see this being fleshed out more to be a really cool complete game

@lyon Yes! the Idea is that it starts SUPER easy because all the cards are overpowered, but as they run out of power it gets increasingly impossible

@sgt3v There is actually no error, just ran out of time to make a game over screen hahaha! sorry about that! (it does print a "Game Over" on the log thou :P)

At first I didn't realize you had to drag the cards to play them. Clicking and not actually dragging it onto the board also degrades the card.
Overall it's pretty fun to play, and it would be really cool with more types of cards, like more attacking and defending :) Good job!

> don’t quite understand the connection to the theme but it’s a nice concept.

The idea is that all the cards run out of power as you play them until they become mostly useless and you loose

I liked the game, at some point you beginn to use strategic and safe the mightiest cards for later.
Would have been great to have the number of turns you last displayed.

A bit addicting, but I can't tell you how much I've played because there is no tracking, no score, etc. Graphics could have been better~~, and the gameplay is heavily RNGesus-based (there are these affect-everything-but-the-corners thingies which are overpowered, but on the other side you drop cards with 1-2 tiles AoE),~~ but I liked it.

EDIT: I didn't know about the card degradating before; it makes sense now.

Nice one. Like how the cards are getting weaker later instead of more zombies only.

Lasted 29 turns. I like the idea of area damage cards that change over time.

It would be nice an option to skip a turn after you have unleashed hell on the enemy orde :-)

I really liked it! Great idea, nice execution. It is very hard to balance out a turn based strategy game, but this one just works. I could use the option to pass, especially in the early game where it felt a bit frustrating when I had three strong cards and there were almost no enemies. I made it to turn 38 on the first run, where I chose the strategy of keeping the global 2 damage card for the last moment. Overall, really nice job.

Darnit! I noticed too late the cards were getting weaker! Cool concept, it really adds another layer of strategy to the game.
Good job making an enjoyable game in just 48 hours, it's really something you can play over and over again. Also, despite some people maybe feeling it does not fit the theme, I felt the opposite, that it was a really creative use of the theme. Definitely one of its kind!

I enjoyed the concept of both the cards getting weaker and the enemies becoming more plentiful. I would suggest either some background music or a little better art work. Very good job in the 2 days though! Quite a fun little game! :) Keep it up!

Such a cool concept, the cards get less effective when you need them the mos XD. I got to turn 29 on my first try.

### Positive:

- The concept of the game is nice, really innovative and fun. Also it kinda works with the theme.
- It's really intuitive to play.

### Negative:

- The visuals can be improve, also it needs a little bit of sounds :P

But great job!!

Made it to turn 30. The thing is: since there are more and more ennemies, and your less powerfull, you really do run out of power! I like the card game concept: it felt very different frow other game. Well done!

Absolutely love the concept of worsening cards as the game goes on! Wish there was a win condition, but the idea and execution of that idea are solid. Also could've used a "Wait" button to advance the dudes so I didn't waste a card. Got to Turn 30! Thanks!

Very interesting concept! A bit more polish on the graphics side of things would have helped, but it was very fun to play. You should develop this further! I think it could make a good mobile game.

Very nice puzzle game. The idea is quite innovative and it was actually challenging and fun to play. I didn't realize until reading the comment that the game is meant to be lost. I thought I could somehow defeat all the waves :p The drag and drop mechanics works nicely, it glitched out once thought where I used a card at a corner and nothing happened. Like the others have said a bit of sound effect and music would be great.

A solid idea, love to see it get more developed (with more card variety, etc.)

A pretty solid card game. It can get pretty challenging. The application of the theme is pretty good, although that means that you can struggle as much as you like but you will still lose in the end (whoa! got pretty serious for a moment there!). Pretty good game for this jam!

Very nice card game. You have applied theme very well IMHO. I think ability to keep more powerful cards for later could be nice twist.

Really fun core mechanic, and a clever use of theme. With some polish, this could be a great game.

This is a really interesting idea with quite a bit of depth. While the soundscape is nonexistent and the graphics serve as little more than a vehicle for expressing the mechanics, the mechanics themselves are very interesting. I like the decaying card mechanic, one of the better uses of the theme I've seen so far. Additionally, the burning and wall effects made me think a few moves ahead. I did find myself wishing for a 'pass turn' button, so I could maximize the effects of my huge blasty cards. Though I played without reading @boltkey's comment, I used the same strategy of holding on to a global 2 damage card for an emergency. This lead me to exactly the same result that @boltkey had, a turn 38 loss on my first try. Well done!

Quite nice! I lost my first HP on turn 39, died on turn 49. Managed to keep the damage 2, burn 2, almost everywhere card until somewhere in the 30s at which point it was a nice board reset =).

I like that the rules are dead simple, obvious, but still very engaging to play and strategize with =).

Great fresh concept, and works the theme in really well. Easy to play. I would love to see it expanded upon!
I made it to turn 37.
There were a few times early on that there were not many zombies but I had the most powerful cards and wanted to skip a turn or two. Improved graphics and effects to show what was going on, and the addition of sound, would go a long way to making this game a pure joy to play.

made it to turn 36. Also, I hadn't seen that button generating tool before, it's cool I'm going to have to start using it.

27 here. It was fun! there was a strange glitch where one card wouldn't drop but instead the little fire cursor was stuck on the screen, and I played another card, and the game continued, but it only spawned me 2 cards after that each time! haha Either way, I enjoyed it! thanks!

Great gameplay. I've implemented a similar concept in the past (without the decay), so it was a cross between PvZ and your game. I like the amount of strategy involved though, that's the beauty of turnbased. You can go in much harder with your design and patterns. Good variety of cards and they each had their role on the team.

The only thing I'd like to see is some indicator of how many times you've used the card. I was aware of the decay but I would've liked a usage count (not really necessary though).

Intriguing strategy game. This has the seeds of an addictive game because of its simple design and visible decisions.

To help with planning the right cards, the player should get some more feedback about card decay - how many times you've used a card, perhaps how it will be downgraded on your next use. Beyond that, an audiovisual upgrade (maybe going for a specific setting/theme) would do justice to the fun gameplay.

Hopefully you'll develop this further!

Got to 33 on my first try. The game itself is nice, of course it could look nicer with some better graphics. It's also pretty RNG which isn't necessarily bad, but there's ultimately not a lot of tactics to be made since you'll always run out of cards regardless. I still enjoyed playing it though, I loved seeing everything burn! Ha-ha!
