Vampyre by SandPile

[raw]
made by SandPile for LD 43 (JAM)

Vampyre is a game about a vampire on a quest towards satisfaction. Transform into a bat to fly towards victory!

This game was made to look like an NES game, using primarilly colors found in SMB3. I had this idea for a game four years ago, where I created a prototype using the same transformation mechanics. I saw the potential in the idea, and the theme suited it quite well. I hope you enjoy it!

CONTROLS

  • A and D to move left and right.
  • S to crouch.
  • S + SPACE to transform between bat and human.
  • SPACE as a bat to shoot fangs.

OBS - The Post-Jam versions are updated versions of the game, made post the deadline. - For the web host, please don't open the game in fullscreen. - This game needs to run in a 5:4 aspect ratio.

NOTES - Sorry for no MAC version. I don't have a MAC handy. Please use the web host. - Sadly I don't have a clue how to make music, so this game doesn't have any.

RELEASES

04/12/2018
- Tweaked movement as both human and bat to be less slippery.
- Updated the door sprite and the key sprite.
- Fang projectiles now obstruct the sunlight! (This is merely aesthetic).
- Sprite overlapping issues
- Added a black border on the left of the screen, simulating Mario bros 3.
- Resolution changes

This entry is really cool! Excellent original concept and perfect graphic choice to make it.
The only thing that I would improve, currently, are the bat controls, which is a bit too imprecise.
The advice is to continue developing this concept, because it has potential. Good work!

Your game is SO clever. When my fang teleported me across the moonlight, it felt like magic! I loved the learning curve here with the flying up and teleporting around aspects. I also like the art style you used and your color palette. This game made me keep wanting to play and explore. The one thing I'd change is maybe the movement. Walking seems really slippery like I'm sliding on ice. I wish I had a little better handling on it. Other than that though, really really cool game!

Now, that's my kind of game! Where do you guys come up with this stuff? Well, I hope you had a great game jam. I really look forward to your future games. Thank you for all your hard work, and keep up the awesome game making! Until next time... (:

Very fun. Like m3curial92 said, the bat controls are too smooth. Too much acceleration.

Great mechanic with the bat and possession. Well done.

Liked graphics, a nice colour palette.

The walking sound was a bit strange, but at least there was sound so I could hear the villager.

Movement felt slow and slippery and I feel like you didn't really need to be the humanoid form since you need to be the bat to do almost everything. The sound effects didn't really fit the pixel art aesthetic. The mechanic doesn't really evolve that much would have been cool to at least develop it a little further. Overall I think it's ok but a lot of basic things like movement could have been cleaner.

I think the aesthetic of this game was great! I found the human form to be pretty pointless though, since all your abilities were in bat form.

I really like the mechanics here. I haven't seen anything like it before. The visuals and sound effects meshed well together and were well done. I did run into a bug where i turned into a bat, shot the dude, then jumped down to the door and when I hit the ground I turned to stone. Then I respawned on the other side of the light column and couldn't cross. Overall though, great execution!

Clever idea and great graphics! It could just use some technical improvements and it would be a 5-star game (e.g. hitboxes, enemy/bullets not spawning, physics)!

Great little game with some cool mechanics, which fits really well with the theme. I really like the graphics and sfx too. Good job.

And this is the first game I've managed to complete. yay

I did not get the mechanics - why are the fangs transporting me? I was unable to run post jam version and the original one was pretty bugged, still the graphics is amazing and the few sfx (except touching light) were pretty spot on! The game was fun before it started to be too buggy, so thanks for that! P.S. The bat vertical movement - didn't get that either, but maybe it just needs more time to get it. Also the animation! Cute as heck!
