Programmer Energy by sn0uk

You are a lone programmer working away in your room. Your lights are flickering, your PC is on it's last legs and you are struggling to get this program finished. You rely on drinking heaps of tea to keep yourself going.

This is my third Ludum Dare and certainly my best. I didn't manage my time and sleep well however I had a playable product at the end of the first 24 hours, the rest was just bug fixing and creating mood in the level.

Thanks to all my play testers for feedback.

Once I had H H to drink the tea :D RIP :(
Anyway, not half bad! Good for type-writting practise :)

Not a fan of typing games in general but I think it looks nice for what it is and pretty easy to understand.

That was my initial game idea!
Yours is great, really, but there's a huge mistake on the compyter screen (and in the screenshot).
Good job!

WELL today I learned that my touch typing is pitiful. Gorgeous presentation, super relatable concept. Nice work!

I'll start by saying: that ragequit animation is amazing haha! I like this game, I really do. Whether it's because of it's cute artstyle, the fast typing action or the sheer panic I experience when I need to press two buttons at the same time. Only critique I would have is that sometimes it prompts you to press two keys at the same time, that you would type with the same hand. I'm not sure about you, but I don't practice yoga on my hands, so this is where I usually come to my inevitable doom ;) Anyway, good job on finishing this! You put a lot of work into this, and it shows. Best of luck.

@virtual-turtle-studio Thanks for the feedback, that is an interesting point you make about the hand yoga, It's something I plan on changing after rating is over :)

Nice job! Definitely captured my attention for a few minutes, something many other games I've played so far have not managed to do.

@fork0 Lol, game inspired by me not being able to think of a game and just going back to making cups of tea for inspiration.

A nice overall combination. The UI works well. The tea breaks are a cool break between and have nice animations and sounds. Good job!

I realized that I don't exactly know which key is where on the keyboard. The cozy mood and feeling of the game is really nice, it would be better if it had some more game play depth.

Turns out I'm terrible at hitting two keys at once... Well done game for what it is though!

It seems that I can type single keys perfectly fine, but it turns out pressing two is a bit more difficult. Love the look of the game and the idea behind it.

Wow, I really like typing games, but I am utterly awful at hitting two keys simultaneously. Needing to do it 3x in a row is, well, I'm very proud of the one tea I managed to drink in my many attempts ;) A little more time to pull it off, as well as somewhat more lenient timing requirements for simultaneity might help a bit. I only suggest this because the hand movements required can be awkward, forcing you off of homerow and making true simultaneity of the presses difficult for some combinations. It might even be better to leave the timing as it is, but make sure that the simultaneous presses are always on opposite hands (though this might require support for both QWERTY and Dvorak modes at the very least), forcing us to still think quickly about which keys we're hitting, but removing some of the physical awkwardness.

Full points for mood and, well, humor though you appear to have opted out of rating on that. That table flip is absolutely epic. Great interpretation of theme. Minimal but appropriate sound, well-presented graphics. This is really nice work, I'm glad to have had the opportunity to play it! Awesome entry :)

Simple game, easy to start but hard to master. This is the sort of game I can play for a long time. Drinking Tea was hard at firstt to understand, make make it more clear when you should attempt to drink it?

Maybe you should add like a mini game kind of like ohhh no there is a bug you need to type a number sequence to solve it.

@holdmeimscared Thanks for the great feedback, the awkwardness is something I'll look into, although you don't NEED to press them at the same time, its more of a if(they are both held down). As for opting out of humor, it appears I was very tired and completely forgot about the table flip! Oh well, thanks again!

Cool music, the sound when you lose too, but I always lose XD

Oh! Thanks for the reply, sn0uk. Ahhh, that makes sense, I didn't realize it didn't actually require simultaneous presses - I'm just way too slow then. Should have figured that ;)

I did like the game very much, and yeah, the table flip was a great exit.

This was a neat meta-Ludum Dare game. I really liked your use of a blurry version of the first screen as the background for Unity's new splash screen, I'm going to have to remember that. ^_^ The overall look of it reminds me a bit of Quadrilateral Cowboy, but higher fidelity.

:star: The sound effects were all well made and seemed to fit the actions they were for. I enjoyed the "rage quit" animation a lot, and I think it's really smart to give the player a good last impression of your game (and completely unexpected ^_^).
:bug: Maybe a sound or input bug, but after drinking tea the first normal key press(es) don't seem to be registered. reading the above comments this probably isn't a bug, but I was also under the wrongful impression both tea keys needed to be pressed together, but when you get double of the same key it feels like a bug.
:point_right: I found the background music got a bit tiresome after several loops.

Overall good job, and thank you for making this!

High Score: **4403**

@hitchh1k3r Yes! The art style was very much inspired by Quadrilateral Cowboy, im glad someone noticed. Thanks for the awesome feedback, I plan on making changes to the game post-jam and ironing out those bugs!

At first, I didn't realize what happened when you exit the game, but I tried it again and laughed out loud. This is a great game. The graphics look really good, too.

The graphics are dynamite!! I like the nice tight premise and the way it was presented, my only complaint would be - after the 7th or 8th round it feels rather repetitive, I wish there were a couple more features to help spice up the gameplay, but other than that, it was a very pretty game that was rather enjoyable to play! :)

I have been doing a short let's play series on YouTube where I play through my favourite LD 39 games and Programmer Energy was one of the games in my last video. Here's a link if you are interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6VLnCENNAg&feature=youtu.be
