SlapR by MewSoul

Gameplay
You're a penguin on a small icefield trying to defend your igloo from other penguins by slapping them (that doesn't make much but sense, but hey, there has been a game about a plumber jumping on turtles!)
Short summary
So actually for this Ludum Dare, I had an idea in mind at the start, and when designing my main character, I had an other idea which resulted in the game you're looking at! :)
I could have gone for the Compo, except I couldn't do the sound effects and I think the one I found fit pretty nicely, so the Jam it will be!
Team up for the future? :o
Actually during this Ludum Dare, I thought that maybe I should team up with someone for the next one (maybe with an artist), so like each one of us can do more in its specialty, exchange ideas and create something even better! So if it sounds interesting to you, hit me up! :)

I haven't been able to test the Linux and Mac builds, Unity Cloud Build did them for me, so if by any means they don't work, don't hesitate to tell me and I'll try to fix the problem! :)

Thanks for checking out our game, [E.(a)T.](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/e-at). Much appreciated :slight_smile:.
@tdennist Ahah Glad to hear that! :) Yeah actually I did the hit detection quite quickly and it's a bit strict to detect enemies, you have to face them directly and be quite close to them.
@gcoope Oh yep nice idea! I started doing the animations but I had some problem making them work properly so I just stopped and went working on another part of the game.
@willbl3pic Thanks for the feedback <3 Yep sorry for the hit detection, it's been done quite quickly and it's kinda strict to make it work :x
@huynq Yep you're right, I had this feeling too, I missed some time to make the game feel more fair and more seemless in the way of moving/slapping, I'll try to focus a bit more on that for my next game jam! :)
@brotherst Ahah I had this exact same thought when I played your game! :) Right, sorry for those two problems, the hit detection is pretty rough to get it right (you have to face directly the enemy and be quite close to him, actually how did you do it in your game? I would be pretty interested to know how you get it to make it work so nicely!), and for what is being in the air it's because I had some trouble of setting the physics nicely and not breaking how the icefield behaves. Thanks for playing and leaving a feedback, much appreciated too! <3
@Veralos Yes sorry for that, actually you need to be quite close to the enemy penguin and face it completely so that it gets detected.
@OccultOne Sorry for this bug, I noticed that at the end and had some hard time to fix it and not break how the icefield behaves, I tried to reduce it the most I could to be able to work on some other parts which were needed.
Even if I didn't mention your nickname here, I read all your feedback and I'm happy to see that you liked it, thanks everyone! <3 I'll stop by to play all your games quite soon :)
but i must say, it was rather difficult (at least for me.)
cute simple, and quick game. definitely not perfect, but really neat one. i did like it.
Slap animation. Even if you don't animate the penguins, some special effect so that we know the slap was clicked and what the range of attack is.
UI change. For some reason my task bar appeared over full screen games, and for yours it covered up my house health and penguins slapped. If it were at the top, that'd be awesome.
The game was quite interesting despite a somewhat common setup, I guess it's thanks to good level design.
The characters were quite adorable, though I would love to see something like a slapping animation to clarify action :D
I was wondering if there was anything to the two penguins that were just chilling at the top of the screen... Maybe I didn't get far enough to see that?
I only experienced the issue with flying up into the air once... and it worked out to my advantage because I was able to land back on the ice and not in the ocean.
=====================================
So judging by just the screenshots, it seems I am going to like it. And right off the bat, I apologize if this review seems kind of rushed, or short, because I've been rating games, and I think this is the last one I am going to do before homework.
POST-GAME
=====================================
So I just finished playing it and here is my review:
-Gameplay
Solid enough, and being able to slap off pengiuns was awesome xD It was a fun game that seemed kind of repetitive, but had good replayability and held my interest for some time.
-Graphics
A huge thing that stuck out to me - graphics. They were amazing! The voxel feel with not textures and materials really fit the overall aesthetic and feel of the game. And GOD DARN THOSE PENGIUNS ARE SO CUTE owo
One weird thing I noticed was the shadows don't appear one water, its a really small thing, but just something I noticed.
-Innovation
It was great, I mean who decides to make a game about penguins slapping each other! Brilliant! And to pull it off well was a feat which you surpassed.
-Theme
It fit the theme OK I guess, as you're small world you were defending was the ice.
OVERALL
=====================================
Basically, I really enjoyed this one. I really liked the art and graphics style, the gameplay, and things like that. If you added a lot more content like more penguins, levels, playable pengiuns and stuff, I'm sure you could go places with this game.
@smiling-cat-entertainment Thanks for the comment! Oh no, nothing happens with those two actually, at first I thought about animating them but it turned out I didn't have enough time. Sorry for that issue, some physics stuff I couldn't resolve properly :x
@kataware Wow, really thanks a lot for that feedback, it doesn't feel rushed at all, it feels more like the opposite and you took time for it, thanks again!
I'm going now to review the games of all of you that I didn't review yet! :)
It's a bit funky that there's no animation. A movement when slapping and maybe a bit of waddling would look great.
The slap sound effect was great. It felt impactful whenever I took a penguin out. I wish there was a more intense background soundtrack. Calm waves do not feel right for penguin combat.
I also had some input issues, I think due to my multi-monitor setup. I should probably have run it in windowed mode.
Sometimes the slap didn't seem to register when I expected it to, an animation for that would have really helped here.
Sound effects were well-chosen and added to the atmosphere, and I really liked the wobbly arena too!
Since it's already pretty complete and fun, let's focus on what could be improved :) Not as is - I'm thinking if you decide to take the project further with some updates or release it outside of the jam.
- ice floe balancing: while fun in itself, the floe doesn't feel too slippery. Would you consider making it more slippery, like ice, to add some challenge? It would fit the theme pretty well, actually. And let's be honest, penguins sliding on ice AND being slapped at the same time are hilarious, period :D
- obviously, some slapping animation would be nice - better feedback for the player, more humour in the whole setting.
- 'wetter' slap sound; while hilarious as is, a wetter, more penguin-flipper'y sound could fit here even better instead of pretty standard punch sound. Something to add a nice touch to the whole thing.
- obvious little things like difficulty levels, leaderboards and such, to challenge players further, and increase replayability / game lifespan.
Very simple, yet solid project with nice audiovisuals. With some more work and tweaks, this could be a pretty releasable game, well done!
Cheers, and stay awesome!
@takusan Wow, thank you so much for the great feedback (and I've seen how many great feedbacks you gave to others too which is amazing, I'm impressed to be honest, so thanks for all of them too, you're awesome man!). Actually you score a nice point with the slippery floor, this has been one of the first thing I tried to do but I couldn't do what I really wanted and it started to take me too much time. I didn't think about the wet slap sound, that's a great point too! Thanks again, cheers! :)
