What remains of Project 424 [HTC Vive Only] by Yaroslav Kravtsov

[raw]
made by Yaroslav Kravtsov for LD 39 (JAM)

This is a horror game without screamers. All threats visible from a long distance and can be noticed by sound. To play this game you should have HTC Vive. Maybe it can be played on Oculus, but I have no opportunity to test it.

Each Ludum Dare I have a goal for my self to try something new. New game designs, new algorithms, new technology. In this time I had an opportunity to work with HTC Vive hardware. So I decided to make my first VR game. I have no wish to compete with other participants. My plan is to use LD as a motivation kick.

In the result, I'm happy. I made VR game that I have fun to play. It's quite challenging even for me, but after 3 days of playtesting I can guarantee that game can be beaten.

Almost all 3D models and textures I get from Unity Asset Store (some of them free, some of them paid). Most of the sounds from FreeSound.org. But the whole level was assembled by me from scratch and there a lot of places to walk (without gameplay rewards, unfortunately). For the VR locomotion I used scripts from Asset Store. After playing different games I came to a conclusion that arm swinging is the best solution to locomotion after teleporting. But teleporting ruins immersion, what is the main feature of VR technology.

I recommend you to launch the game on Ultra setting. There no heavy effects and game are pretty optimized. I have no issues with fps on GTX 1060 and i5-7600K. And I can't guarantee that everything will look good on lower settings.

It looks cool and I'm sad that I won't get a chance to play it since I don't have a Vive. I think this should be in the jam if you used Asset Store, even if you disqualified the graphics ratings.

I don't have a vive, so I can't play it, but I need to say a few things
-like incobalt said, it needs to be in the jam if you used any pre-made assets
-You had to make the game in 48 hours (72 for the jam) to put it up
-Next time, I don't suggest making a VR game for this jam, as not many people have a headset
Are you aware that this is a game jam? There is a time window to make the game, a theme to make the game around, and a set of rules. This is NOT a game uploading site like itch.io or steam.

Yes, guys, you totally right. I made the submission in the middle of the night after three days of hard working in two realities and I messed up with categories. Now it fixed. I know the difference between Compo and Jam. I have 4 games made in Compo restrictions. And I know that only a few people can play my VR game instead of hundreds of people if it will be web-based game. But it's okay for me. I come to this LD for my personal goals (learn how to make VR games).

Hey, Yaroslav, first happy to see you here, second ... i think LD it's the best way to transform quick your ideas into prototypes. MAN, a hole VR game into 72 hours ^))) you astonish me in a good way. is 5 out of 5, even i can't right now test it ^)(Actually youtube helps a lot to understand all).

Any chance of a porting for non-htc users?

vipbasil, thank you for kind words.

Simone, I haven't Oculus to make a port for it. Probably, it can work on Oculus just from the box. But there is no reason to port this game to the regular first-person shooter for monitors. It is possible and not hard, but all idea was to make VR experience.

Hi, I tried to test your game with my oculus rift but it doesn't quite work.
I am able to see the game, but I spawn in the ground and the game doesn't seem to recognize my touch controllers, so I can't really do anything :/

Nice game! It's fun. Unfontunately it doesn't really fit into the theme, and it is a bit too easy for my taste (maybe needing to reload or only being able to sprint for a few seconds would help).

0uicmoi, that sad, but it is useful information for me. I will search for solution on my next VR game.

Cataractar, you are the first person who gave me feedback. Thank you! Glad to hear that it is too easy not just for me. It is hard to make a game that you can't playtest on any random person before submit.

OMG I don't own a VR headset so I cannot rate it, but I looked at your walkthrough and it looks nice!
I would classify it as some sort of "light horror" (especially from the unsettling sounds the things were doing and the amount of darkness)... VR is the platform I wouldn't want to play this kind of game ;)

Very nice job, If I were able to play it would have been probably a 5/5 .

Good luck with the next LD, maybe in a bit of time I'll get a Vive, too :D

VR entry, impressive! Does tend to limit the number of users that can play your game, but having the gameplay video was a nice touch.
