Numbness by Velocity7

[raw]
made by Velocity7 for LD 41 (JAM)

You are the hero! She is scared and only you can save her!

The game is a platformer and FPS game. You have to save the princess and get her out from the dungeon. Her arms get numb after drinking the potion of life. She quenched her thirst after drinking it but the outcome was horrifying. She lost the feelings of her arms. Now she asks your protection from the creepy monsters of the dungeons and puzzles to solve and get her out of the darkness.

Pretty fun fusion of platformer and FPS. I was happily surprised how well they worked together.

The best part of this game was it's mood. I really liked the atmosphere and there is some kind of tension between you with the gun and the princess.

Level design was very good taking into account this was a marathon game!

I only rated art and music for the part that I thought was made by you. They were ok and fit the theme.

This is a nice concept and it is clear you put effort into the story and conveying emotion and how the character felt. It had some interesting mechanics (breaking stuff with items inside, enemies, darkness). A few bits of critical feedback (don't take it personally, I say it to try help!). The shame with this two genre combo is that it actually functions like a run and gunner game. If you imagine the princess had a gun, and there was no first person gun on screen shooting, it would function exactly the same in reality. Secondly, it was very distracting as a player to have such contrasting art style. It doesn't matter how good or bad the art is, but it should be consistent - your seemed to mix different styles, resolutions, some really fancy fire particle effects - and when all combined it just felt very disconnected! I enjoyed the story, the dark level was fun, and glad the princess was okay again!

oops sorry princess! (don't know why that was the first thing i tried once i got a gun) The gun has some missing pixels and as honest dan was saying conflicting art styles really detract from a game, I would have rather seen the art of the platforms and items and effects made by you. The platforming feels a bit floaty and if you get up next to a wall and spam the jump you get shot up into the air (was really fun to mess with though.. was trying to find a place I could try to fly out of the game but you closed it all in =.=') there was a sentence or two that didn't make sense but after a few times messing around I saved her lol good job ;D

Thank you guys for your critical feedback. I knew that the art style was inconsistent because I made the art for the first time and just couldn't come up with any for a dungeon so I just picked something that could fit. @Honest Dan the particle effect was bad for the pit because i scaled it LOL. @blackoptics8 Haha I knew someone would try to make her fly and my sis told me that she was flying. Its the tilemap that was doing it I don't know why. The main thing I focused on was the mood and emotion of the game and I think I made you guys smile at the end

This is cool. I like it. Collision detection was a bit awkward at times and the > buttons are a bit too small, but the combination of 2D platforming with a shooter is really compelling. You could probably expand on this idea pretty well in the future, too.

Short & sweet game. Could be fun for 2 players as well.

What I loved
* Combination of 2D platforming and a shooter was executed really well
* The story was compelling
* Ambience

My Thoughts
* Collision detection was a bit awkward
* Contrasting art style  which caused the game to feel a little bit disconnected
* The mood & emotion were on point though!

I’d love for you to review my submission as well.

Nice, the mood is great, and I like that there was a narrative and some emotion in the story! About the theme... I am not sure, but I don't think this is merging any themes, this is a run and gun 2D platformer, the fps mechanic isn't an fps mechanic.

Interesting combination. You definitely need some crosshairs as the gun doesn't give an indication that you're actually aiming up/down in addition to the left/right movement of the gun. Also really annoying level design in the first level if you don't have a key, you have to retrace the entire level.

This took me back to the days of 2000 free games discs on Mac OS 9 in the 90's. The weird combination of clashing art styles weirdly enough make it extra retro feeling. In general though, this ain't my kind of thing and I do think it needs some more polish.

I really enjoyed playing your game until the end. The mood is present and consistent the whole time. Music and scene transitions are fitting the game too. I also loved your mix of genres ! It feels good to play a platformer with keyboard and mouse.
If I had to name one thing to improve it would be the character controller. The fall seems a bit too slow and the controls don't feel precise enough I would say. However your game does not demand a lot of precision with the jump so it was not a major problem.
I also noticed that you can't jump when you stand on a barrel, but again, it does not break the game.

Very well done for a one-man team ! And your first LD submission ! I'm looking forward for your next entry.

To be honest when I started this game I didn't really like the concept. However, the concept did not reflect my final view of this game. The contrast between the graphical styles of the princess and everything else in this game actually worked in its favor. And while the gameplay was way to simplistic to carry this game through an epic hour or more adventure it was perfect for a game of this size (it took me about 3 minutes to finish the entire game). There were some flaws in the overall design. The rules of the game seem to be inconsistent at times. For instance, I was able to shoot all the boxes and barrels in the second area but I was not able to do this later in the game. Also I am not sure if it was a problem with the collision detection or if it was a legitimate feature but I got caught on a wall as I was jumping down. I was able to use this to climb back up the wall so it may have been an actual feature. Overall I feel it was a well crafted and enjoyable game.

Good:
- The idea is simple and inserting.
- The sounds and music is pretty good.
- The mood and story is interesting.

What could have been better:
- The game mechanics is fine, but I believe there could have been done more with them.
- The graphics is not bad, but it is a bit messy.

This is an impressively complete solo entry, complete with nice music, sfx, graphics, and a few different levels. My recommendation if you take this forward is to add some more platforming challenges especially if you could incorporate the shooting and the platforming together, like shooting your character for a double jump, or clearing enemies mid jump. There is a lot of potential here!

That's a pretty cool combination of genres. A good improvement would be to have more and faster paced enemies so that dodging and quick aiming would become essential. The enemies that are there are a bit plodding and easy to pick off - I basically just parked the princess while I dealt with them and then carried on again.

I'm not sure what to do about the mix of prefab and new assets. The audio in particular does create a good mood though, and I like the transitions and stuff in the intro.

Nice one! Though the platforming feels a bit floaty and also has the unity well known "wall stand" issue (just literally try to stand on the wall and you'll see), still the music set pretty good mood and some visual effects were very well done! Overall I enjoyed the experience, thank you for that! :)

Thank You @honey. Oh that's unity's well known issue? I didn't knew that

Hehe I finally got to play your game! (Better late than never ;P) I really liked the idea and the part with the map and the darkness was very good! I felt like I really had to focus to remember and get through.
The assets were a little mish-mashed together in terms of style and I guess that's because some were from a previous project? The music was spooky too. :)
There were a few bugs, which others have already told you about, but I didn't find they impacted the gameplay. I would have liked it if there was a gun reticle to see where you were pointing precisely but I guess the arrow was fine.
Overall very good!

@velocity7 yep, the built-in colliders and physics engine is very prone to that due to the default calculation of collision so it's probably better to use custom raycasting or at least fiddle a bit with colliders. But custom raycasting is the least expensive workaround as far as I know (e.g. sphere collider would be much heavier).
