Description

ASCII Racer is a realtime racing text adventure. You play a one-on-one race against an opponent by typing text commands into a console and seeing what happens.

How to play

There is actually an ingame tutorial! In general, it might be helpful to read the texts on screen, as that is all you get in a text adventure. No clicking involved.

Gameplay tips

  • You cannot die. If you ran into something and stalled the engine, use speed up to get going again.
  • Turns are easier to master at lower speeds. Either brake, or stop accelerating with speed 0.
  • Persistent rumbling and a top speed of 15 kph might indicate a slight vegetation problem.
  • Do not forget to shift gears.
  • The lane left/right command has a slight delay.
  • You should steer around bends with turn left/right. If you do not, each < or > symbol pushes you one lane to the outside of the turn.
  • Do not forget to straighten your wheel after the turn with turn straight.
  • Use short commands, e.g. g u instead of gear up.

screen.png Did you see how I blurred out the texts, so you will have to actually play the game to read them? Nice, huh?

Hahaha GREAT, i finished 2nd in 226 seconds after some tries :)
it's a shame that this game do not have any feedback! That was a fun idea, very well executed. First, the tutorial is very professional, and allow us to enjoy this very uncommon game. My eyes are a bit burning because of ASCII art but this is very well executed, and looking good for this kind of game. Crazy idea, lots of humor, and much talent involved to make this unique compo game. Congrats :) Cheers !

Cool idea! I feel like the turns and lanes could have been a bit more clear visually, but otherwise it was pretty fun.

Interesting! I love the use of elements outside the actual ascii/text to convey elements of the game (like the wipers).

I took several involuntary trips into the countryside. I finished 2nd in 108.5 seconds. I'm hoping that wasn't too bad. Visually I couldn't tell what was going on, so I was largely reliant on the prompts. Speaking of the prompts - I did have a nervous breakdown. The text prompter is a filthy liar in that regard.
