Super Squareface by LaceMattley

made by LaceMattley for LD 38 (COMPO)

Super Squareface is a game set on A Small World (tm). It's a platformer, jump on dudes head to kill them, just like real life.

Controls: WASD for movement, space for jumping.

v2 was updated afterthe deadline so if your'e a purist feel free to play and judge v1.

v2 fixes a bug where people were getting stuck in walls when jumping. I added a zero friction physics material to the colliders, not a big deal, took about 5 minutes but makes quite a difference. Nothing worse than janky jump physics!

Wow, nice game! Love the voxel style, especially the water. Jumping mechanics could be tightened a bit,but I love that you had checkpoints, and added new challenges as you progressed through the world. Very nice game, fun to play!

@lacemattley A solid game, enjoyable for the few mins of game play. Platforming puzzles were challenging at times. Did you make all the models yourselves? Nice Job looks good :)

Really liked the style, reminded me of Cube World. Fun game play, could've done with some direction though. Also ran into a bug where the camera became fixed at one of the checkpoints and wouldn't follow my character anymore?

Overall, though, great work! I enjoyed playing your game.

Lovely game! The art style works well and you implemented the gravity shifting mechanics nicely. Not a whole lot more for me to add really!

This was enjoyable with a few caveats: Jumping was weird, I can't describe what felt so awkward but something just didn't feel right, It wasn't game breaking but it was there; hitboxes for killing the bat things were a bit glitchy, Sometimes I would land on one and it would die, other times I would land on one and instantly lose 2 points of health; when the player lands it takes them a half second to slow down. This wasn't an issue until the last section where I died several times to just sliding off the edge.

On the positive side of things though the music was nice and the visuals did their job. Your inclusion of checkpoints was a good choice as it's the kind of thing that often gets left out and this game would have been unbearable without them. Ultimately I did have fun with this game it just took some work.

The game is pretty good overall. I have some notes :
There is some parts where it seems you HAVE to loose hearts to move on. Also some times, you respawn on an enemy, or in the last part, when climbing the ladder, the snowman throw you an inavoidable snowball :o

Still, congratulation for your game

I also got the bug with the fixed camera. Beside that, I really enjoyed your game. The graphics and music were pleasant and the gameplay was basic but fun. Good Work!

Cool game and well done on making such an interesting looking voxel world. I wish the jump was a bit higher though, especially against those blocks that are 2 units high.

Cheers for the feedback guys, that camera bug seems like a big 'un so might make an updated version to fix that.

Really nice little game! I really liked the voxel artstyle, but in my opinion, the enemies were a little too detailed.

A thing I found a bit annoying, is that the platforms after the last checkpoint didn't reset if you died, so if you fell in the water a few platforms in, you had to wait for them to respawn. Another thing I didn't like is that the stationary snowballs still hurt you. But apart from that well done!

I loved the artsyle of the game. It wasn't too punishing to get through, and the whole concept of the the world rotating as you moved through it was a really good one. Some of the hit detection for jumping on the enemies was a little wonky in places but overall it was great jam game. Nice work!

I particularly liked the rotating of the world, nice idea. Generally it's a good game, although the controls are too clumsy at times. Especially on the platforms at the end of the game it gets a bit frustrating when you cannot precisely control your jumps Nevertheless a good game, cheers.

I had a fun time until a camera bug occured. I died at the snowman in the ice area, after that the camera got stuck and did not follow me any further. (I played version 2)
However, I like the overall concept. You made good use of the theme with that world rotation feature.
If i had one complaint, it would be the amount of checkpoint. Its too damn high. :)
All in all, fun and solid game.

It was cool to traverse all these different locales within such a short period of time, rotating as you go. That fit the theme really well. I noticed you even put a molten core in the middle of your world, which was a nice touch. More noticeable change (like an up-and-down bob) added to the run animation would've gone a long way. As it is it looks like squareface is just sliding along the ground. Also I couldn't tell why you weren't allowed to jump on certain enemies. When in doubt, look at what Super Mario does. No one expects that you can jump on the Spiny enemies! Overall a solid game!

The voxels flying from an enemy death really made them satisfying. Also really liked the look of the water. Overall, a very enjoyable little platformer. :)
