KEYBOARD WARRIOR by croewens
KEYBOARD WARRIOR
KEYBOARD WARRIOR is a game made for ludum dare 41. The theme was “Combine two non combinable genres” and I tried mixing a roguelike with a typing game. No library / Framework was used. First "finished" game & first Ludum Dare submission.
Bob (cool guy once you get to meet him btw) used to be a keyboard warrior when he was 13. Now he uses his typing skills to combat all evil that has inhabited our WWW (whole wide world). Who would’ve expected him to save the the world? I didn’t. Let’s see how good he is with his fingers; I mean keyboard.

Would've been cool if pressing the key automatically aimed and shot so there is more focus on typing
Got up to 150 until a zombie seemingly spawned right next to me? The difficulty could ramp up a bit faster. Except for that surprise zombie part.
@Dekobii Thanks! That's a weird bug though. You tried switching between azerty or qwerty mode?
Had a few zombies spawn right on top of me steal my health without being able to react though!
@noumenus you can switch to other keyboard layout by pressing enter!
The most attractive part of this game I'd say is the theme and graphics.
@Ryan Bishop aggreed ;)
@Subhajit Nath Thanks for playing!
@ElusiveMilestone & @WalkDiGidong yep, that's something for the future!
Great work!
@Gurbx I''m thinking about using phaser in the future but I just love creating everything myself :smile:
@Jiri_One no time :zzz:
Thanks all for playing my submission. Appreciated!
@sugarbyte lack of time ;) But I'd like to work on it in the future!
Nice little game, and I agree with people above, sounds and musics would make this some much better!
And either no mouse control or no movement control make it less weird to control.
@Radical Dog expanding this game is already on my todo list!
@Max_Frankenstein Yea I'd love to add a leaderbord. Just gotta figure that out when I get to my todo list as mentioned above :smile:
My suggestion is to map the controls to other buttons, for example, the movement and vision to left click, but keeping the weapons in the keyboard. It would probably improve the speed of the gameplay :D
But overall the game is good, very colorful and simple to understand ^^
Other than that, the game lacks a bit of progression. But still, I liked it a lot. Graphics are amazing and the UI is very concise and useful.
What I liked:
+Simple mechanic
+Drawing style / animation
+Innovative way of shooting/controls
+Everything is made by one person! You have my respect!
Ways to improve:
-Sound!? Any sound effects / sound track (even poor ones) will add up to user experience.
-Add more challenge/end goal. Say, crawl though the level on time or shoot all zombies on time. Otherwise the player can stay in place and just shoot around. Or even taking movement control from the player: the character moves to whatever he pleases and the player should shoot the way through the hordes of zombes - this way you can engage WASD buttons for shooting, or even the whole keyboard. Just give it a try.
Anyway, great job!
### Really liked
The graphic style
The concept of the key and ammo type changing
### I would like to see
A little more aggresive IA
Walls to retain the player (maybe a bug, but I could walk endless out the scene)
Aside from that, the concept is great. Typing while moving around and aiming sure does make an interesting gameplay. I had fun. Good job!
The art is beautiful and gives a nice touch over that.
We just lack a goal to keep playing I think (we have the same problem on our game due to lack of time), waves or levels would perfectly fit in there.
And as @dp3rucha said, I could walk outside the spawning area, making it easy to avoid zombies, maybe that's why I found it easy to survive.
Anyway, great job ! 😄
The fact that you did this without a framework in such a short time is awesome!
I got over 400 points.
I liked the color choices too :)
The UI texts fades way too fast sometimes, but that's far from game-breaking. Nice job!!!
I liked the inertia and the controls of the characters
Impressive game for a solo jam : o
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

PD: with sound could have been even more incredible.
Some sound effects and music would be really nice to have though. I like to use BFXR for sound effects and Jukedeck or Abundant Music. :musical_note:
Overall really nice game and I'm glad I got to play this game. Really well done! :smiley:
@Linus I'll definitely check that out!
Some points for improvement:
* Sound effects would improve immersion
* The score counter vanishes the second you die - I don't know my final score, but it was around 300
* The enemies seemed to be too passive - they only try to home on you when they are already pretty close - or is that even just by chance?
* A sort of goal would be great - e.g. try to get to the bottom / right / some destination point
* The difficulty could slowly increase while getting to that point
Things i really liked:
- Visuals looked really nice.
- Firing and hitting enemies is satisfying.
- Loved effect when you rotated your mouse and "ammunition" sort of just rotates around.. really cool looking thing!
What i would change:
- Instead of having buttons that you have to press next to character it would be nice to have it next to cursor so you don't have to pause for a moment to look at what button you have to press.
- Slightly more variety with enemies.
- Sound obviously.
All in all, great game!
@mshopf your score disappearing could've been because of your last letter being an X. If you spam it -> you'll also respawn :smile:
It started lagging really bad on Firefox after a short while, though. I tried it in Edge then, but WASD didn't move my character there. It finally worked all right in Chrome, but there was still a little lag going on.
The art is cool, nice spherical design around the player for the key stack and the ammo. Very cute zombies too. Obviously, this game would have benefited greatly with audio, even just simple 8-bit squeaks and blops. The visual feedback that the next key needs to be pressed isn't *really* there and a reload sound would've helped a ton there, for instance.
All in all, sweet!
The movement works well and the random weapons keeps you alert.
The GUI is beautifull.
I think that the typing element is too simple and doesn't represent a challenge. Increasing the typing part with words or the other letters of the alphabet would enhace the progression and variety of the game.
Good work!
It would be amazing if there were more feedback about the letters change. I feel pretty good the letter you have on actual ammo but it would be perfect if I could know when it is going to change the letter or what letter is going to be.
Perhaps the difficulty it is a little easy? I dont get touch by the zombies in any moment. It could be improved if the IA comes to get you for example (or going harder to you xD)
Anyway, that is a nice entry, I like the idea and I have fun playing this!
Good job!

A bit on the easy side, but the mechanics of Keyboard Warrior seem ripe to be further expanded later down the line. It was a bit hard to get used to constantly changing weapons, but the more I played, the more it grew on me. It forced the player to think, react and adapt quickly. Paired with the text effects, the game felt just right on setting and delivery
It was still on the easy side though. Like some open sandbox. I never truly felt any urgency, and overall, this played more like an experiment of mechanics, with no real objective other than surviving. You've got quite a lot of feedback already, so odds are that I'd end up repeating something you've already read a few times.
All in all, this is an inspiring project. Very fitting with the theme, and extremely solid mechanics that should seriously be considered for a more elaborate project. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see more of this. Cheers! :whale:
The idea is very funny and original! Congratulations !
I found moving around with keyboard pressing all those keys around the ones I use to move is just confusing (I play more on console)
I feel like the was no difficulty ramp. It is not that hard to move around without dying.
Great job!
To me it's more of a prototype than a totally finished game, but it's a REALLY WELL made and polished prototype!
Great work (;
Here is our game if you want to check it!

- The pixel art
- The shooting (Really, the bullets look super cool) :thumbsup:
Suggestions:
- A scoring system would have been great.
Overall, awesome entry.
