2D Retro Shooter

"Where did all these geometric bodies come from?!" is the biggest question in Avoidance, a retro-ish game where you have to avoid and shoot these bad, bad shapes to get the highest score.

The twist: The higher your score (i.e. the more enemies you annihilated), the slower you and your fire rate get.

Avoidance_Title.jpg

But how does it work?

  • Avoid geometric bodies
  • Shoot geometric bodies
  • Get the highest score
  • The higher the score, the slower the player and his fire rate
  • WASD or arrow keys to move
  • Mouse to aim
  • left click to shoot

Software

  • Unity3D for making the game
  • Blender3D for modeling and UV mapping
  • GarageBand for music
  • sfxr for sound

Have fun! This is my second Ludum Dare, so I would really appreciate some feedback!

I've updated the download links with a fix for graphic issues I was having on some platforms. Now everything should look like on the screenshot on every platform.

I liked the game, it was fun. I liked both the graphics and the music. The game play was rather fun also.

It's a simple game that worked well with the theme. It looked and sounded good, and it was fun to play. All around good job!

A solid little game. Making the pitch go lower when fire rate goes down communicated it well what was going on and the presentation was pretty good over all. Tweaking a few annoyances here and there, like making player ship stand out from the background more and maybe making the enemy ship collisions slightly smaller, would have made high score hunting more pleasant.

Nice "sprites", smooth movement ... and fun!

The music is cool (I was less convinced by the sound effects - my ear is getting used to the bfxr defaults settings :-)). Some solid obstacles would have been cool!

Also, you could have made the game also playable using the direction keys (some of us are left-handed).

A solid horde-style bullet hell type game. The background "grid" becomes an eyestrain really quickly, however, but the game was quite fun.

The overall design of the art was great. Simplistic but functional. I liked the tie in with the theme, you get weaker as your score increases - and more enemies spawn. The shooting felt a bit weak and could use some more game feel (great tutorials on the subject on youtube - add knockback, make the projectiles a bit bigger, a bit of muzzle flash, screenshake, etc, should make the combat feel more impactful).

Loved the visuals! And the idea of higher score = smaller fire rate was really good, nice one there!

Interesting use of the theme! The colors of the enemies was kind of confusing for me, I though the green ones were friendly or something. If they have the same attributes, I think it would have been better to use the same color for all of them. The controls are nice and smooth, the music is good, and doesn't get repetitive.
We had a somewhat similar theme idea, based around health and damage balancing.:D

Nice entry... I love the style. I did notice that I can hide in the corner and shoot baddies for a while, so I think there needs to be something to discourage that behavior. Solid entry, congrats!

A lil Geometry Wars clone with simple yet clean graphics, classic but fun gameplay. This genre fits all naturally with the theme :)

A not really innovative entry, but still a good one! Great work ;)

Very nice compo entry! Simple but effective graphics with both sfx and music. It really did get worse the more score I got so nailed the theme.

My highscore: 182

Oh. The first screen with white grid lines, white fonts and white player is rly awful for your eyes.
But game control and game feelings done pretty well and it was good time to play this game

Sweet tunes! Really gets you in the basting baddies (or not?) mood! Really an interesting twist on a old idea. The distinct option to avoid, and specifically not shoot, the enemy is a unique dynamic I think. The 3D environment and geometric shapes were pleasant to look at as well. Good job!

Excellent game, good music and lovely art style. Overall I really enjoyed it but the difficulty curve is quite steep once you get over 100 score.

Hey, I like them dodging enemies just like in Quake II! Neon lights and geometric primitive shapes are the things that will never become irrelevant and you combined it great! Fire rate has a serious impact on difficulty and the fact player can clearly hear it decreases allows him to make some tactical decisions. Also, thank you for a great music and a Linux build!

Nice entry! both music and graphics were spot on. It would have been fun to have some kind of "boost" that you could use to boost your speed for a few secs (or it would give you a machine gun etc. possibilities are endless) . Best tactic is to stay in one corner and shoot everyone that tries to get you :D good job!

Interesting little game, i like how the red guys try to avoid my shots. Very challenging game and easy to understand. Maybe a few short, this game demands more mechanics to not became boring pretty fast. Maybe some "nitro" or sprint so you could dodge the bad guys when start getting slower, more enemies or even a boss that attack you more quickly if you have a lot of points. Good work.

Haha! Nice take on asteroids! Looks quite pretty; needs an iPad version ;) It's quite difficult once you get over 100 points, but I suppose that is kinda the point. I also liked the music, well done. I also like the 2D projection of 3D objects. Also nice that you made a Linux version, and even the Web version seems to work well.

I loved Geometry Wars so this is right up my alley. This is a really REALLY well done 2.5D game. Great depth effects, though subtle, in the enemies. The only thing I can think of that'd improve it is if your ship rolled as you change direction (a la the Unity3d space shooter tutorial if you're familiar). Fun game, looks great, and the way you worked in the theme threw me off and delighted at the same time.

Got 282 points sitting in a corner. Sure beats moving around!

At first I though the amount of enemies introduced a major slowdown, but it was all intentional! I'm not a fan of such artificial mechanics. If fire rate and movement speed go down with the amount of enemies on screen then my survival chances are limited much more by your design than my skills! I don't like that idea, feels very arbitrary.

I would prefer incrementally increasing enemy numbers and behaviours. Eventually I will lose, but it is up to my skill level only not to having my ability to fight slowly taken away!

The graphics are fine and the music is quite catchy in fact. Good job on those.

Really fun game, responsive controlls, catchy music. You should make wall edges round or bouncy, so you can't sit in the corner forever. Graphics also look really interesting. I would love to see different kinds of enemies as you progress.

Really interesting. Of course, it reminds me some old games which had been released on Vectrex. Primitives shapes and wireframe are fine. You could improve a little bit the main gameplay which is still relevant. A nice entry ++

Simple nice game, with great graphics. Realy has Geometry wars vibe.
It would be great if there was some kind of weapon upgrades, or any sense of progression.
Also, sone kind of explosion when destroying the enemies would go long way in bringing satisfactiory and rewarding gameplay.
My take in LD40 was fairly similar in complexity, you can try it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/heist-of-kharon

Pretty enjoyable! Music fit pretty well I thought, one tiny improvement that would have went a long way would be to add some flashy effects on exploding the baddies. Good job though ^^

Our team does a weekly indie gamedev podcast called Nice Games Club, and we just did a Let's Play episode where we played thirty-six (!!) Ludum Dare 40 games, including yours (which we couldn't quite get the hang of, but thought was cool)!
