Thats the best I could do.... Mad props to you two for making a game all in z80 assembly. Even more mad props for making a game that looks and plays well too. Now I want this on a cartridge so I can play it on real hardware! (Is there any reason it couldn't be loaded on with a flashcart?). Its a shame that you didn't have time for audio, but I would encourage you to add it later. One thing I noticed, the wrench pickups just prolong the level but don't give bonus points, right? (anything to pad my bad score). It was a nice touch to let you use the crates to slow yourself down, a feature that is unique so far as my past experience with runners is concerned.","likes":2,"format":"md"},{"author_name":"netguy204","author_uid":"1012376","time":"2018-08-14T02:11:23Z","epoch":1534212683,"modified":1534212683,"text":"I was happy to fire up a gameboy emulator and try this out. I admire that dedication! It looks and feels really authentic. It is a bit disappointing that there's no music or sound effects; I would have loved to hear some gameboy bleeps and bloops. The game itself is a pretty basic runner, but it's competent for what it is. One thing I noticed is that the box obstacles slow you down, but going slower actually makes the game easier, so there doesn't seem to be much of a point to avoiding them since it takes hitting a very large number of boxes in a row to kill you. We targeted a 32k cartridge so we wouldn't have to worry about bank switching, and had a true \"Don't Panic!\" moment towards the end once we started making level data. We had filled up the first 16k bank entirely, and the project wouldn't build! The release is a Gameboy ROM, and source code is available on Github. I wrote a tiny amount of the graphics system a few days in advance while I was learning the toolset (specifically for background tile scrolling) but the vast bulk of the code and all of the game logic was written during the 72 hours.
