IntroNoticeDemolition.png

Take charge of the Vogon Constructor Fleet and demolish Earth to make way for a Hyperspace Bypass! Strike a balance between keeping planetary systems around for income, or sacrificing them for your ever-expanding interstellar roadways.

Instructions:

FULL SCREEN HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Drag Right Mouse Button to move the view. Use WSAD to pan around when not focused on a planet.

On the top of the interface, from right to left, are your Funds, Income and Happiness. Funds is how much you have, Income is how much you're getting... and Happiness can be ignored, because you're a Vogon!

Demolish planets by selecting them and pressing "Demolish". Cleared planets can be used as steps in Hyperspace Bypasses.

The aim is to build Bypasses between lucrative systems, to accrue to highest amount you can by Turn 12. To build a Bypass, Left Click on a system to start at. Then press "Route"; the indicator will turn blue to show you are route-building. Select a destroyed system and press Route again to continue, until you reach your destination, where you finish by pressing Route one last time. You can also see the cost of the Bypass and the projected profit per turn.

Good luck!

Updated: - Fixed numerous bugs with building state logic - Fixed tutorial glitches and some wording - Fixed pricing bugs and adjusted bypass pricing

Other notes: - The Build button does nothing: it was a placeholder as I wanted to have the ability to enhance planets but ran out of time - The Happiness value (green on topbar) tracks when planets are destroyed, but ultimately does nothing. Which is suitably Vogon, I think. - The main view is missing stats on the planets (name, resource summary); that was going to be a toggled overlay that I never got around to!

Impressively thorough tutorial with some solid Hitchhiker's Guide humor in there. Quite nice graphics too, great work!

What, no comments? I'd imagine everyone likes space dolphins.

Anyways, this game! Wow. Much polished UI, many gameplay. Feels about finished and well-polished all around. Unfortunately I get lost without a simple map, but I do like the fact that you can fly around!

Damn, such a good idea for the theme. Lacking a bit in gameplay, but that's probably because of lack of time.

Thanks for the feedback!

@echo-team I had hoped to put a little more info into the main view, which would have made navigating the map outside of planetary selection a lot less bewildering, no doubt. But yes, many things dropped to time constraints!

Interesting concept. Nice graphics, and the _Hitchhiker's_ theme as bonus flavour. Good fun.

I had a hard time really getting into the gameplay itself, and it definitely felt a bit incomplete trying to play through the game, but _man_ I just really really love the look and feel of this thing. I was excited from the start splash screen, but was absolutely blown away when the first message box popped up with dialogue, just the sounds and the UI graphics, and the nicely rendered planets, it all feels so great! Would really love to play a full game with this quality of interface and polished graphics, so please keep it up!

I went ahead and demolished every single planet. Is that sufficient for a hyperspace bypass?

Jokes aside, I love space games so I found this very interesting. Good job.

Oh man, I love Hitchhiker's Guide! Great graphics and I gotta say, it was way more fun than it should've been to blow up planets!

Nice work! As others, I liked the graphics, UI & story/humor. The only thing I thought of as slightly negative was the navigation. While it's fun to fly around in space, it is quite easy to get lost or "misplace" a planet you had in mind. To go around this i flew away quite a bit and so could click on any planet from afar but still continue seeing them, but alas, my plan didn't work since clicking on a planet teleports you to it :( Other than that - impressive effort for such a short period of time!!

Thanks all!

@reax Haha, but now you don't have anywhere to go between! Except maybe... neighbouring jurisdictions, but of course that is completely out of the question. You'd need a new form, for starters.

@justinmullin Glad you liked the look and feel! I know what you mean about the gameplay though, I think. There's much to do in terms of balance and making the whole thing more comprehensible. Right now its hard to get a sense of the overall strategic situation and, as @erikiene points out, you can indeed get lost pretty easily. I did plan several features to mitigate that. One was a gradual "lerping" of the camera when selecting a planet (rather than instant teleport, which can be disorientating). I also wanted to have a horizontal grid from which all the planets would have lines drawn out of, with name tags and income shown without selecting. I think this sort of reference point would help make it a little less overwhelming!

I feel the improbability of this game appearing in an LD42 about space, was less than infinite... We almost had the same idea only it was supposed to involve poetry, so it's probably best we didn't go there.

Anyway

Gameplay: Awesome

Graphics: Lovely

Bacon rolls: Quite good

Use of theme: Best in the known universe

Nice concept! The largest problem I had was with the navigation, clicking on a planet just places it into focus and you have little idea were you were. Some panning transition would do wonders. Or maybe just a top-down view without any spaceship movement.

I really liked that this game is dedicated to Douglas Adams. It was pretty obvious to use his legacy for this Ludum Dare :) I think your game is very solid and well designed. One of those games you don't close after couple of minutes of quick evaluating.

I enjoyed all the sci-fi references hidden throughout the map. The gameplay itself was a little difficult due to the navigation controls but once i got the hang of things it seemed easier.
