Roamin' Hordes by Imperial Unit

[raw]
made by Imperial Unit for LD35 (JAM)
Roamin’ Hordes - the barbarians are coming!

Shift and change the shape of Roman formations - keep the battle line strong enough to withstand the onslaught. If the Emperor’s Praetorian Guard fall, the battle is lost!

Shape and position play an important part in the tactics e.g spreading a formation will protect a wider area, increase archer effectiveness etc., but it increases the risk of the formation being overwhelmed by multiple attackers.

Before combat begins you can customise your own legion with the formations you want to use, with different the types of units having unique stats and pros/cons. During battle, zoom from a birds eye tactical view, all the way in to see animated combat in all it’s 2D pixelated glory.

A quick play wargame/RTS/tower defence hybrid - Roamin’ Hordes was our first ever game jam entry. We are a team of two brothers from Australia, Luke and Matt, otherwise known as Imperial Unit. All code and graphics were built from scratch during the Ludum Dare #35 game jam.

The soundtrack uses pre-existing music, Battle in the Winter, by Johan Brodd (jabromedia).

We hope you enjoy playing, and appreciate your votes and comments!

***Some people have reported problems with the HTML5 webGL Unity version not loading (it can take a while) - we have put downloadable versions for Mac OSX and Windows on the itch.io page:

https://imperialunit.itch.io/roamin-hordes

***Camera controls: RMB or arrow keys to pan, mouse wheel or [ ] keys to zoom.

Update:

- fixed a bug with the defending units on the left and right being backwards
- fixed the background music not looping
- fixed a bug where the velite had the wrong icon
- made the next round button more obvious and added some additional help text

The original version can still be found at http://imperialunit.com/ld/ld35/RoaminHordes.html

Nice, solid little tower defense game, especially given the time it was made in. I had fun, good job :)

I agree with the above, I thought we had covered every interpretation of the theme possible in our design discussion but this is something I didn't even remotely think of.

Amazing work! The way the units split up to fight really sold it as a war sim. The enemy footsteps really made me feel like I was under pressure, in a good way. And special thanks for putting up the direct download ;)

better then TW:Rome II, but yeah, all in all it a very fun game, I wish there were some more icons on the screen to show what kind of units I had and what kind was attacking them, so I could learn the rock-paper-scissors economy (if there is one), and grow as a general.
Whit that said I'm very impressed you were able to make this within the time limit.

This game is amazing. The graphics are very appealing and fit the feel of the game well, and it's a really nice twist on tower defense. I felt like I learned a lot in the very first round about how I set everything up so horribly wrong. Managed to make it 5 rounds before getting truly decimated - I could only watch with fascination and horror as the heavily armed masses swarmed my poor defenseless archers and my middle Pretorians made their last gallant stand.

Will absolutely be playing again. Great job!

Neat game! I like the idea, I just wish that all the soldiers were individual and would operate on their own. Still, solid!

I enjoyed this, but the first few rounds are a tad slow. I didn't really need to start moving or changing tactics until the 5th round. I ended up dead on the last round.

Great interpretation of the theme! I loved it! Graphics are really nice too! I wish I had a way to know what's the difference between units, and at least move them from flanks in between waves. Anyways great entry!

Cool idea, and the graphics are great. However, I didn't get a lot out of the main mechanic. I pretty much just spread out my archers before I started and then let it run. There's a few things that I assume are bugs that make it a bit unbalanced. On the top, left and right the archers wiped out almost everything in one volley. On the bottom,, they never fired a shot. It crashed on the fifth round in both the WebGL version and the Mac OS version.

Despite all that, I quite enjoyed myself. The game has an appropriately epic feel.
