Really good, characters were fun too talk to and the world was fun to explore. Short but polished!

awww, this was amazing! I think i broke the game by giving the raccoon food before i gave the cat the blanket, because the hell sequence never started. i had to refresh. still, amazing work!

Adorable game. Great art, great music, and controlling the dog felt nice. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go snuggle my dog for a bit.

@blobo there does seem to be a bug, but I think it has to do with the game waiting for the player to press X. When in doubt, press X!

Thanks for comments so far!

The art and narrative are nice, cozy, and heartwarming but it's not much of a game with nothing to do.
Would have liked to see some choices, like what would have happened, had I not given my stuff away.

What did we do to deserve dogs? I really like the graphics, particularly that text box. It's been a while since I've used HaxeFlixel properly but I'm really impressed with the text animations featured.

Oh yeah that was exactly what I wanted to play :D It's really cute and I'm glad I had a button to bark at the end. Keep making games like those!

<3 HaxeFlixel! I loved your text-effect - something you came up with yourself? (I'd love to see your code!)

This feels like a small masterclass on how to create scenes in game development. Obviously a lot of work went into the graphics and presentation, as well as music and sound. Lovely game!

Thank you for making my day a better day. I wish there were more games like this ! Pure kindliness and warm that make you feel better :)
Also the animation of the hat when the dog is running <3 and the soft sound of the snowman when it talks <3

I really enjoyed this entry! It was a nice little wholesome tale, only thing I could give critique on i the length, but I really can't complain, you set out to create a small narrative experience and it is what you did! The audio and graphics worked very nicely together!

This was overall a very nice entry, a bit simple, but well polished and wholesome!

I loved the art! The doggo was incredibly cute and the running animation as well, I spent quite a lot of time just running around for the fun of it. It also had great audio and I appreciated that the sacrifices were rewarded (if it ended in hell, I'd personally not like the moral of the story very much).

As a short story, it was very sweet, but I did kind of hope it would be interactive. Right now it wouldn't make much of a difference if it was "just" a cute animated story. I guess that's why it didn't really feel like a game. But it was still a very nice experience. :)

Thanks everyone for the comments, it's been really encouraging for me!

@torn I thought about adding some branching with not giving items, but cut it for scope, but then also it would then be very sad - I also wanted to make a specific point and branching would make that harder

@gamepopper We did nothing to deserve dogs, they are a gift :) (other than breeding them for thousand of years - but that's not us specifically)

@deconstructeam Thanks! The dog I think is lot more willing than most of us!

@seifertim Me too! The text effect is an extension off of FlxBitmapText (as FlxText is blurry in the HTML5 version, at least in the current version I'm working in) for my personal library. I have to do different things depending on whether it's blitted or not, and implemented a simple tagging system (may not be the most optimal). It's in the source under the ext folder, and I modified slightly for some sound specific stuff so it may not work by itself (it's using a static function from the G class). It's not really documented or cleaned up well yet though but feel free to take a look.

@ynneblack Just running around makes it interactive, yes? But I do get what you mean- It's something I can experiment more with in the future :). What was the moral of the story for you? - I'm interested in more specifics of what people are getting out of it.

Hm, the moral of the story... on one hand, it might be that helping others doesn't have to benefit you, but in the end, it's still the "right" choice. Basically that if you help for the sake of helping and not expect anything in return, it's valuable. And in-game, it gets a delayed reward that the doggo couldn't anticipate so you can see the doggo just helped purely out of good will.

On the other hand, it could be that sacrificing too much for others is risky and you should take yourself in consideration too. That's how it felt before the final step (in hell), anyways!

@ynneblack Nice examination, I was thinking about both of those things. I think the good will part is super important. It's not the works that saved the dog - in fact, the works were done with questionable results - does the snowman need to stay warm?; Did the cat kind of just take the blanket?; etc - the works were really an expression of the dog's good will. In addition to that, we can try to do good all we want- even with good will it may not have a good result. We need something else that can save us and others.

Personally for me, that would be God (the mysterious entity and the owner) - someone that can perform something unexpected, and someone can can love unconditionally. Ideally (this is not in the game), if God exists as an entity that does two of those things, and perhaps even more than what we can imagine, and we strive to know what and who that is, that can inform our good will in how we can best help others (even if there is risk).

Anyway, just some of my personal thoughts - thanks for your sharing!

A solid little narrative with good audio and visual presentation. Excellent use of text effects to add flair to the character dialogue. Sprites were well animated, and your use of particle effects with the character's movement helped sell the walking animation that much more. Sometimes it's the little things that make the mechanical experience rich.

Excellent work on the game assets!

While it wasn't a game about making world changing decisions out of extensive dialogue trees or anything of the sort, as a short story it's rather thought provoking without the need for puzzle elements or dialogue mazes. I think it works the way it is. Concise, and to the point. It hits the theme hard, projects a strong mood, and does so without getting mired in puzzle elements or fetch quests.

Wouldn't change a thing in regards to delivering the story as is.

Regarding functionality, it seemed rather solid to me. I might suggest trying to lock the player character in position while interacting with world elements. It's a bit weird that one can trigger the introductory dialogue by walking back near the start position, or skip over it and trigger it again by returning to that position. Perhaps use the interact key to start dialogue with characters rather than triggering it by proximity, but this is a very minor issue.

For all that I've said about this game, there is one thing that I think satisfies me about this game at the very core of my being. I find it to be the single greatest accomplishment of game's creator and the greatest source of satisfaction I have derived from the entirety of the brief time I spent with this game. Read emphatically, perhaps the depth to which I enjoy this small- no, big - detail of "A Walk in the Neighborhood". And that thing is the following:

I got to press X to bark uncontrollably. I pressed X many times while I chased my tail.

A sweet piece of visual interactive storytelling. Really like the art style. Nice work. :)
