Speed Hoarder by CrazyMinnowStudio

[raw]
made by CrazyMinnowStudio for LD 42 (JAM)

You are a hoarder and a “Preems” subscriber at “Amazin,” your favorite online retailer. You have a near constant stream of new boxes arriving and you will run out of space quickly if you don’t organize your hoard efficiently. When an Amazin delivery truck arrives, quickly pickup the boxes and stack them on the floor over one of the green glowing indicators or another box. Boxes of the same type can be combined up to three times to take up less vertical space and award more points, while different products will only stack on top of each other.

GameOVER if the delivery van hits a previously delivered box! Hint -- keep the porch clear or jump over the boxes and push them back towards the door (sometimes that can save you).

Controls: Move - left (A) / right (D) Jump – Space Aim – Mouse cursor Pickup / Drop – Left click

NOTE: There is now a post-Ludum "fixes & enhancements" version available. The mechanics are the same, except now, the box size determines the available packing slots. There is a new packing status indicator on each box after you have packed it full or stacked a different product on top of it. This gives you an idea of how you did once the game is over. Several bug fixes included -- should now be pretty near impossible to get stuck between stacks and under boxes.

All art, sounds, and music are original -- created during the Jam -- ENJOY!

Alas, my time as a hoarder ended when I got trapped between boxes. Overall a good use of the theme and I liked the graphics. On my second playthrough (where I was attempting to lose the game/mess with it) I managed to jump up onto the roof of the house and then into the abyss haha

Thanks for playing, and the funny comment. We're publishing an update where we tightened the gap between the stacks. It creates more of a climbing around on the pile dynamic.

Maybe add a screenshot! that would help give the game more exposure.

Great effort nonetheless!

Really funny concept, I think I am that guy in real life, I never get rid of the frickin boxes! lol. I appreciate the home-made mouth sound effects, made me laugh haha. Wish there were more gameplay elements, boxes with special effects, explosions! Nice work!

Thanks @gus-the-shark, we were cracking up making this. We had more ideas but not enough time.

Fun game! Also a good use of the theme!
However, the gameplay is kind of monotonous, I think.
By the way, the mouth sound is quite interesting! I really like that!

I like the music and the start screen is really nice! I kind of felt like the character moved too fast, which I guess is strange since that would be helpful to me in the game. I think I was generally a little frustrated that I couldn't control the character very well, but maybe that's just me being bad at playing haha. I think overall you accomplished so much and the game works very well with the theme!

I thought I was getting damaged by because of the sound effect XD, background music is great. The controls didn't feel nice to me. The design + theme works good.

Hello!
I think that in the current state of the game, the controls are not adapted, but it was interesting anyway. I liked that it felt weirdly realistic with the smartphone and stuff. Good job!

Nice snappy controls. Fun art style. My first time playing I got stuck in a box and couldn't move. Fun Game!

Thanks @remicraft! It seems the controls are a love/hate relationship with players, some like snappy, others do not. We have made some fixes to hopefully eliminate getting trapped between the box stacks and under the box colliders and we may upload that soon. Thanks for playing!

funny concept, i liked the idea of doing a hoarder game for this theme! i enjoyed playing. is it possible to unstack boxes so you can kind of rearrange while waiting for the truck?

I really liked the sound effects! The game itself was a little hard to understand and the art didn't show very certain things like when I lost I didn't realize how or why at first.

@haberworks thanks for playing! We thought about the ability to re-stack, but our thought was that ultimately made the quick decision making process much less important. We have some ideas to further refine and extend gameplay. Maybe re-stacking will ultimately make its way into the game in some form or other! ;)

Thanks @ja-viera! You are correct - for the sake of time, we chose to explain mechanics in the Ludum game description instead of in the game. We do plan to continue to polish and enhance the game and certainly will have hints and instructions in-game.

Interesting idea with awesome sound! Gameplay could be a bit faster, and game would benefit from some animations for the player! Overall really good entry! Keep up the good work!

I liked the snappy controls personally, and the game went very well with the theme as others have said. Playing as an average joe was also nice haha. Makes me think of a King of the Hill character, but drawn by Scott Adams.

@stefan-jovanovic there's certainly some balancing to do -- the deliveries are completely random at this point and you might get 2 boxes or you might get 12! Grab and stack pregresses pretty leisurely, but with the enhancements version, maximizing score requires packing with a little planning and random-strategification. We've got a few ideas for lengthening play and score ceiling. Animation was certainly on our list, but time ran out and it had to be postponed. Mike is already working on rigging the character tho.

@humpert764 thanks! All of the sounds were made with a headset mic and some creative SoundForge Studioing. Most were mouth sounds, but the progressive packing dingalings started off as dinging my coffee mug with my dog's pill popper that happened to be laying on the desk next to me! ;)

@scottyseus Mike created the character and did an awesome job -- when he showed it to me, I just said...YES!!! ;)

Thanks for playing everyone!

pretty cool game. i like how you can combine similar objects together. the deliveries are coming in pretty fast and there are a lot of boxes. It would be great if the character is animated.
