smallworld by misterstripey
Play as a friendly little dude who loves bouncing. Use bounces to help you navigate a ridiculously small playing area and survive for as long as possible.
Warning: this game is quite difficult.
Play in-browser here: https://toomuchtomato.itch.io/smallworld
My first ludum dare compo game! Glad I kept the scope small and finished on time.

Full unity source code is on the itch.io page Used Unity with the Fungus plugin.

The game really hard, probably a bit to hard. Dodging two objects in such a small area is nearly impossible :).
The graphics and audio are unique in a charming way, and complement each other well.
The gameplay was too far on the hard side, in my opinion. The space that you were playing in (and the fact that Friendo doesn't bounce) made it almost impossible to survive for longer than a few seconds. Additionally, I feel like the missile would have made more sense as a temporary stun than as a delayed death mechanic? Might give the player a bit more room to manoeuvre.
Anyway, for a first LD game, good job and congrats on getting finished! Keep it up!

Maybe a little bit hard, you could balance rocket rapidity for exemple.
Music feet the mood very well
BTW the bouncing is SOOO satisfying :D

Some notes about the game if you think they are useful:
* I agree with @skruffye about the missile: if the missile is just a stun (like freezing me for a couple of seconds) then I could try to escape again
* maybe also some kind of lives system could be good, like I have to be hit 3 times by the bad guy before I die, otherwise the game just seems impossible
* a UI suggestion I care a lot about: when I only need one device to play the game (for example the keyboard, since I only need WASD to play), please don't force me to use another device (like the mouse) to do trivial tasks like skip the intro and restart the level. Just let me do them with the same device (like "press spacebar to skip/restart")
But you created a complete game with music, graphics, gameplay, and even a story at your first Ludum Dare! Great job!
nice job.
- The missiles start right away, would it not be better to introduce them later on as a way of escalating the difficulty?
- Once I was hit with a missile it would be game over as I always got eaten, was that the intention?
I really liked the art and sounds. Overall a good experience :D
Some suggestion:
- As there is kind of inertie when you bounce, maybe you could reduce the difficulty of the rocket (maybe reduce the stun time)
- Please next time, think about non-WASD users! (I struggled finding you have to type "W" to have the "Skip" showing, as I was playing with arrows)
The music and bounce sound are fun, nice graphic & sound quality!
Honestly, it was down to the last minute with getting a functional build, so I'm glad it came together at all! Next time I'll leave some time at the end to polish gameplay.
However I really like the polish of this game! The eyes animation when bouncing of walls, the cutscenes and dialogue are great! the tutorial leads you step by step into the gameplay. The ending in the stomach is also really nice.
