smallworld by misterstripey

[raw]
made by misterstripey for LD 38 (COMPO)

Play as a friendly little dude who loves bouncing. Use bounces to help you navigate a ridiculously small playing area and survive for as long as possible.

Warning: this game is quite difficult.

Play in-browser here: https://toomuchtomato.itch.io/smallworld

My first ludum dare compo game! Glad I kept the scope small and finished on time.

Well this was an interesting one!

The game really hard, probably a bit to hard. Dodging two objects in such a small area is nearly impossible :).
The graphics and audio are unique in a charming way, and complement each other well.

Interesting concept, although the theme seemed to have been added in a little bit last minute. :P The visuals were good (if a bit sparse) and I quite liked the music!
The gameplay was too far on the hard side, in my opinion. The space that you were playing in (and the fact that Friendo doesn't bounce) made it almost impossible to survive for longer than a few seconds. Additionally, I feel like the missile would have made more sense as a temporary stun than as a delayed death mechanic? Might give the player a bit more room to manoeuvre.

Anyway, for a first LD game, good job and congrats on getting finished! Keep it up!

Funny game, i'm not sure what i am and what eat me? ^^

Maybe a little bit hard, you could balance rocket rapidity for exemple.

Music feet the mood very well

Loved the graphics, and mood of the game. Wished I could have more space to dodge.

Good style. The stage is indeed a bit too small to really work. Good one.

Concept is funny and art is good!

Some notes about the game if you think they are useful:
* I agree with @skruffye about the missile: if the missile is just a stun (like freezing me for a couple of seconds) then I could try to escape again
* maybe also some kind of lives system could be good, like I have to be hit 3 times by the bad guy before I die, otherwise the game just seems impossible
* a UI suggestion I care a lot about: when I only need one device to play the game (for example the keyboard, since I only need WASD to play), please don't force me to use another device (like the mouse) to do trivial tasks like skip the intro and restart the level. Just let me do them with the same device (like "press spacebar to skip/restart")

But you created a complete game with music, graphics, gameplay, and even a story at your first Ludum Dare! Great job!

This was a lot of fun and refreshingly weird! I felt the game to be too hard (like ĂŹn other comments) and the intro sequence was too long to play it over and over again. The sounds were really satisfying though, especially the bouncing. And I like the weirdness of the graphics.

I liked it, it was really hard though. I have a couple of points below:

- The missiles start right away, would it not be better to introduce them later on as a way of escalating the difficulty?
- Once I was hit with a missile it would be game over as I always got eaten, was that the intention?

I really liked the art and sounds. Overall a good experience :D

A bit too hard, there is not much space to move around ^^ What is the thing that is trying to eat us?
Some suggestion:
- As there is kind of inertie when you bounce, maybe you could reduce the difficulty of the rocket (maybe reduce the stun time)
- Please next time, think about non-WASD users! (I struggled finding you have to type "W" to have the "Skip" showing, as I was playing with arrows)

The music and bounce sound are fun, nice graphic & sound quality!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Yes, I agree- the game is much too hard and could use some more of a gentle difficulty curve. Oh and the non WASD triggers and not using the mouse at all are a really good points- thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Honestly, it was down to the last minute with getting a functional build, so I'm glad it came together at all! Next time I'll leave some time at the end to polish gameplay.

The gameplay could be a little bit smoother. I kept dying all the time, and wished for a bigger map to move around and dodge the enemy.
However I really like the polish of this game! The eyes animation when bouncing of walls, the cutscenes and dialogue are great! the tutorial leads you step by step into the gameplay. The ending in the stomach is also really nice.

Okay this is amazing, really freaking hilarious game, the art/graphics are spot on for the tone and of course my only gripe is that it is HARD! But hey, we were warned! Awesome job!!! (the faces just kill me)

I really like the sound effects(like a lot), and the graphics are good for 48 hours. The gameplay was fun, but I only played two games because I had to go through a long intro every single time I clicked play. Maybe only have the intro the first time, then you can jump right into the gameplay after you've played it once. Other than that, great little game for 48 hours!
