Rush Hour! by Zachary Shah

[raw]
made by Zachary Shah for LD 40 (COMPO)

ThumbnailRushHour.png Stuck in traffic? Late for work? In this simple yet quite challenging driving simulator, it will have you winding through obstacles trying to not get any road violations, because, the more you have of them, the worse it is. Make sure to stop at stop signs, avoid hitting cars, and still be on time for work. :red_car: THIS WAS MADE BY A 12 YEAR OLD.

Win by making it to the big green glowing checkpoint.

New Features: - fixed glitch of getting violations without doing anything - violations scatter around screen obstructing view - music added - arrow pointing to checkpoint

  • THE QUICKER YOU GET TO WORK, THE MORE CHANCE OF A RAISE
  • THE FASTER YOU DRIVE, THE MORE VIOLATIONS YOU GET
  • THE MORE VIOLATIONS YOU HAVE, THE WORSE IT IS

You can really speed the things up when you use your car like an Airplane :)
I am really hurt to know that I am a bad driver. I manage to win round1 but didn't see where to go on round 2

R2D48 that is a rendering glitch on second level, strange it does not happen on first though. will fix it soon

Sorry, I don't like to "install" stuff... Can you provide an executable which does not need to be installed?

The game has a nice look but it's a bit hard to tell exactly what the objective is or what you're doing wrong when you recieve a violation

Stom i tried webGL but the game is a little too performance heavy do to the post processing and light maps. If you would like to play it, it is a very small file and a fairly good installer wizard I included.

The visuals are very nice, but the game seems to punish me even when I come to a complete stop. (Perhaps the speedometer should not just round down to 0 but display 1 unless it is ACTUALLY 0?) Also, if you go straight in the first level instead of turning, you get several stop violations when there are no signs!

I agree with @danvil. I prefer WebGL builds from Unity for LD, but also understand the concern about performance since most people judged my last two entries by the WebGL build which could not multi-thread the pathfinding which caused performance issues which many people mentioned. (These issues did not exist in the other builds.) However, when using an installer, I have to install, test, then uninstall. Please just provide the files as a .zip file to save all of these steps in the future.

In the future i would not use an installer, but great visuals! Well done!

Check out my Game if you wish!

I thought it was extremely cute!!! And loved the low-poly aesthetic and the depth of field / cam fx ... the only thing I was wondering if I missed another way to slow down & stop because using S & W was so hard ... and it was so slow!! Added to the challenge though.

If you want 20 ratings, rate other people games. You've only rated 7.

Would be nice to have an online version so that I would not need to install.

The game was very interesting! I was a bit confused about what negative effects of getting a violation were, but I found the visuals and gameplay really good! Good job! :)

Talk about a hidden gem! There are much worse games with a lot more ratings! Feedback:

* Great music, I wish there were more sound effects.
* All of the other cars were green, I want to see more colors! A brighter, more dynamic environment all around would go a long way. Take inspiration from Crazy Taxi, perhaps.
* I found that in order to get to the goal, I HAD to collect violations. That's by design I imagine, but I didn't know how many violations, or which ones would cause a Fail state.
* I really think there is something to this race against the clock being balanced by goal of not getting too many violations. A faster pace to the gameplay (occasionally interrupted by the hilariously slow traffic) might be cool.
* The humor was great. I loved the sarcasm and the violations getting in your way was a nice touch.

I hope this is developed futher!

Nice concept, i like your use of trafic tickets and it fits the theme well.
Maybe the music is a little bit too short and too repetitive.
Graphics and gameplay are nice.

Your game clearly deserve more visibility. If you want help to export it to webgl so people would try it easily, contact me at arthur.ramolet@hotmail.fr. I'd be happy to help :).

Felt a bit hard to control, but the game is fun and fits really well with the theme. Great job!

Cool idea with the traffic tickets obstructing the view. Hard to beat, but I guess that was the intention?

Nice little game. World bound roads are bit expoitable and I'd prefer traffic lights instead of stop signs. But considering this is a COMPO entry -- great result and great art style.

I'm a bad driver, I guess?

Umm I saw that you updated the game. You fixed bugs but you also said

music added
arrow pointing to checkpoint

These are features, not bug fixes that improve the game. The COMPO has ended, you are not allowed to add features to the game. You need to supply a version that is the same game as your entry but with bug fixes only. You can also add the updated version but for voting, in order to not cheat, you have to have the updated version separate and make that clear.

@Zachary-shah

Also congrats on doing game dev so young, your last game you said you made when you were 12. This is my first LD and I'm 17 although ive been doing game dev since I was around 12 aswell It was not very serious.

I'm a bad driver :( Haha
I really enjoyed the graphics, and even the menu screen looked fantastic. Controls were a bit sensitive, but I'm guessing that was intentional. Nice work

@Zachary-shah By the way, I actually like the fact that you can fall of the world. I think there should be a comedic citation for doing that.
