The Feast by Lossypi

[raw]
made by Lossypi for LD 43 (JAM)

You play as a hellish abomination trying to feast on knights and mages in the name of hell. For every blast you sacrifice bit of health. The catch is, one blast costs more than one dead body can replenish. So try to play strategically!

Tips: - You have to kill multiple enemies with one shot - You can still kill mages through shields, but the blast would be destroyed. Try to kill them from top or bottom - You are invincible during dash. That said, don't try to ram enemies. - Once per game you can make a "Last Stand" shot at 0 health

Oh man, I love the art for this. The audio also is a wonderful compliment to the style, and the atmosphere in general is on point as heck.

Gameplay wise, the piercing mechanic took a few shots to figure out, but it ended up being self-explanatory enough that I figured it out on my own.

However, it seems enemies can just spawn anywhere, and multiple times I had one spawn right in front of me, before I could even react to it. Random spawns aren't entirely evil, but giving the player a "safe zone" goes a long way in reducing frustration.

If you find that too easy, add a telegraph to where the enemies will spawn, giving players more time to react before the enemy appears and becomes dangerous.

I'd also consider adding a slow health regen, and simply preventing the player from attacking when it would be fatal. This gives players an "out" to having health lower than the sacrifice level, without just being doomed.

Overall great entry! I'd love to see a post-compo version!

Am I the highscorer now? :P The game is very fun and nice to play, the one thing I think there is lack of is more levels and enemies! Also the random spawn point of the knights/wizards can sometimes be very annoing, but that's jam and that's normal there ;D Good job guys!

Awesome Game! I loved the art and sound!

It was very satisfying when it clicked that you have to kill multiple with a single shot to sustain yourself

Nice game! It was good fun after I realized, that I have to kill multiple enemies with one shot.
The soundtrack is amazing as well!

Just 2 things: Enemies spawning right in front of you without being able to react is frustrating and personally I think that killing enemies could replenish a bit more.

Love the soundtrack! Did you guys make it?
The gameplay itself is fun and feels like it could be expanded upon very nicely.
For maximum pixelyness remember to put filter mode to point in the import settings of your sprites ;) Unfortunately they got blurred quite a bit but everything still looks super nice

You really should opt out of the graphics-category when using Asset-Packs

@fireslash Thank you for the feedback!
Enemy spawning is the main thing I'm trying to figure out right now. The game has a simple algorithm to protect player from enemies spawning near, but because of the movement speed it doesn't work that well.
Also, idea to block the blast at 0 hp is great, will implement!

@finnhax Thank you, did just that!

Nice game! Once you get the mechanics, it's easy to haunt those poor guys, all shall fear me, mwahaha... Would be nice to have your own score (and maybe highscore) on the dead screen though. Good job!

Cool game ! I really like the gameplay and how you integrated the theme in it. As others have pointed out, it'd be perfect if you had your score displayed after your death

My god is this game addicting. The gameplay is fun and innovative. The pixel art style and animations are great. The music is so catchy and sound effects are also satisfying to listen to. Great game!

This is one of those games that deserves an all 5 star rating.

action packed, great music and good concept! Thanks for this entry I really enjoyed it.

One small change I would make: You should be unable to fire your suicide bullet.
Because now it's hard to judge if I have enough juice left to shoot or not.
Also people want to see their score and post screenshots of it on twitter so next time think about us competition animals!

Solid gameplay and nailed the theme. You knew what you were doing and you did well. Some transitions would be good, but other than that... great entry!!

Thank you all for this amazing feedback!

I've fixed (almost) all bags you've encountered.

In this version:
1. Collisions work much better
2. Enemy shouldn't spawn right next to you
3. Added somewhat automatically raised difficulty
4. Added "Last Shot" notice when you have health enough for only, well, one shot
5. Added "Last Stand" mechanic. Once per game you can make a shot at 0 health to get you out of the most disastrous situations
6. Changed Game Over scene so you're able to see your score

@fireslash, @niborious, @baktillus, @theboss12, @nisepandakun, thank you guys for all the kind words about art style and music. But since this is all free assets, I encourage you to show some love to their creators. I updated project description with URLs to their pages, feel free to tell them that they are amazing!

@captaingim If you didn't make the music I would suggest that you opt out of audio ratings

Neat idea! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/QGU5NZBTfXo

Graphics are nice! I noticed the pixelart for the items are in lower resolution than the rest, which is kinda cool I guess, they seem to stand out. The music has a nice rhythm and overall this is a very fun entry
