Mower Storms by dracominer
Mower Storms is a simple yet challenging game.
It is largely inspired by chess but we added a bit of Budgie Bird flair.
You play as the purple penguins trying to push the other penguins into the castle. However, a lawnmower storm has been brewing. Can your military power hold out?
The Itch.io link will have a better description and graphics.

Windows, Mac and Linux are supported (theoretically. I didn't have time to test mac or linux but it should work.). An UPdated version was added on the 11th of August to fix some of the common bugs. This includes changing the gains for the audio and ficing the bug where buttons don't work as they should. I'm not sure if any of these changes are not valid for Ludum Dare but I highly recommend playing the bugfixed version as it runs much better.
Tools used:

Loved the beginning cutscene, but was also slightly confused about the goal at first. It seemed like a rescue mission, but after rewatching I see its an argument between purple and black penguins for the castle (Escaping the castle, and we are preventing them from escaping it?). Would have liked a 'replay cutscene' option. Why does the castle eat penguins, why are there lawn mowers? *shrg* I like randomness so I'll go with humor points there. Slightly at a loss about which part applies to the running out of power theme?
Agree with the point about a tutorial mission. I thought my units were the ones on the left at first, causing me to think the game was unresponsive for a few seconds. When I figured out which units were mine, and saw the green squares denoting possible movement action became intuitive. Played on medium difficulty and the lawn mower only rained on 2 of my units during the entire game, so barely noticed the lawn mowers despite playing "Mower Storms" :)
The potential for strategy here is nice, but I did not play test that far. I don't think I lost any units playing on medium, so was not too worried about strategy unfortunately.
The audio is a bit harsh when multiple penguins are attacking per turn.
I really liked the different penguin sprites for each type, the fit each type's namesake and they are distinguishable-enough while not distracting. If strategy is important though I would consider making them slightly more distinguishable at a glance. (Tank has a bigger helmet, ranged maybe a larger slingshot)
The UI is a bit clunky in that it is hard to click the buttons sometimes. Example, "Return to Main Menu" button seems hard to click during gameplay.
It was awesome playing your game, thanks for participating!
The game seems quite complete, so you've done a good job of finishing on time. I'm sure the strategy part is thought through, but i simply did not understand it.
That cutscene is the stuff of legends.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to start the game. :( I can get past the cutscene and can even change the difficulty, but when it comes to clicking the Play or Credits buttons, neither work. I have the latest version of Java, too.
The game has potential but was quit confusing. Hard to tell difference between different penguins. I ended up moving all my penguins randomly to the left and win.
I would say make the rules simpler and more elegant.
Or something. Seriously, lawnmowers raining from clouds is great. I didn't mind that I got hit so many times (like every other turn!) because it was just too amusing.
I enjoyed the different units. Once I got a feel for their movement ranges, I was able to use good tactics to destroy the opposition (on Medium). It was satisfying.
Music's really simple but very cute. Some of the sound effects were a bit too loud.
I had fun. Thanks!
The intro is crazy good, and the music fits so well XD
After 3 games, I understood nothing of the mechanics, but I place my soldiers in a "kind of logical" way and it works, so seems fine to me :D
The paint-like graphics give a strong identity to the game, and that's no easy thing to do! Well played ;)
