Cup Space by itsjustjord

[raw]
made by itsjustjord for LD 42 (COMPO)

cover.jpg

Stack the cups! Plan how you stack as in time and with more stacking you will lose space on the table for your cups to fall on!

Everything was made by myself on my own within 48 hours, this is also my FIRST ever game jam along with my first ever Compo!

The keys are very straightforward Space - Deploys Cups. Enter - To quit game. With that being said see if you can rack up some points and let me know in the comments!

Any questions let me know! Thanks!

The game is fun and funny but I didn't understand what to do

@bungalow the idea is to stack the cups on the tablespace and everyone that stays on the table you get points for and everyone that falls you lose points :) Sorry, I should have made that more clear :(

You should probably put a cooldown on the cup spawning rate. I think the optimal strategy might be to hit the space bar as fast as humanly possible, which then allowed me to get so many cups on the table so fast that they then wedged themselves against the plants on both left and right and then I could just stack as fast as my frame rate would allow (about 0.75 FPS at the end) for 41150 points or 103 cups on my first try.

Got to 21,000 ish. The optimal strategy seems to be just to spam. I think it would be more interesting with a shorter time limit, or with a particular goal of stacking the cups in a certain arrangement. If cups falling off the table lost you more points than cups staying on the table I think it would stop spamming being the best way to play. Overall pretty fun though!

I wish the cups were more stable, and I think there should be a bigger penalty for cups that drop, because I found that the best strategy was to just spam cups. Regardless of that though, really fun game, and very good physics.

I'm guessing the macOS and linux builds are in progress? Tag me when that's ready and I'd love to try it out!

Nice little mechanic - as some others mentioned before I think it would be better with some cooldown in place, so you can't abuse the cupspam.

Ended up mostly just spamming space, fun idea and cool cartoon graphics.

This is a fun little game to pass some time playing. I do wish that the cups landed straight though! Great job as your first compo.

Fun game with a very simple mechanic. As many people have mentioned, the optimal strategy seemed to be to just hit the spacebar as fast as possible, but that was fine as it was quite fun to watch the cups bounce around. I really liked your music and sound effects, they did a lot for the quality of the game, even if the cup falling off the table sound was playing almost constantly at the end. I thought that your art was quite good, although the loading screen with a face staring at me was a bit creepy. For a first attempt at a Ludum Dare game I would say that this was a fantastic entry. Well done!

At first I was trying to be careful, but the best strategy is just to spam space as fast as you can, especially at the sides where you can sometimes get the cups to bunch up and then spring out enough to clog up the space between the table and the trees. I got over 80 cups this way, although it also slows down quite a bit. :) Had a good chuckle with this one. I like that in the end, it wasn't that I was Running out of Space, but actually benefitting from filling it up.

This is a really funny game lol! It was really difficult to keep stacking when I got around the 4300 score mark but I had a really good laugh when most of the cups fell off the table as soon as the game was over. I lost 300 points and couldn't do anything about it! Very silly!

Haha this game has laughty me a lot. It's simple but efficiency ! The small humor touch was funny too. My key space is broken now.

Nice work !

@sthor726 Thank you so much :')

@catgol1 Sorry i'll fix that :D

@tinamil I was thinking about adding the cool down all the way through the game, but i thought it might make the game more boring, plus some people like to spam like hell so i thought it would be fun xD But from what you and others are saying I should of went with my first thought! Thanks for playing & Rating! :D

@phlip45 Noice! Well done! Thank you for the suggestion, i think after the LD42 i will address alot of the concerns made and the points & Spam button will be the first one the list :) Thanks for playing & Rating!

The gameplay is very fun. Music is also quite nice, only the sound of cups falling is quite harsh. I would not have guessed that this is your first game jam, good job.

Starting the game I was greeted by a very nice and handsome looking gentleman staring at me right in the face. Thank you. Nice entertaining physics game. After a while I decided to give up on stacking the cups as spamming seemed like a much better solution and would fall anyway. Caused lagged, but helped maximize points just before time ended. So the game ended up as a button masher without any thought. But I do like the sens eof of humor in the game. Nice.
