Satellites - Running out of Space! by TheOmelet

[raw]
made by TheOmelet for LD 42 (JAM)

This is a game about running out of space in Earth's orbit.

Try to launch as many satellites as possible to get as much coverage as possible! But try not to smash them together.

One mistake causes a cluster disaster.
Great concept. The space rubbish is so powerful, I want to hire a space cleaner. :rocket:

Really pretty. But other than that, barely a game, in my opinion.

Great GFX! One of the best in this Jam!

It is fun at first but it doesn't last long. The space for design is very limited. I wonder if you made all the asset by yourself.

Really fun Idea. Also really nice rendering of the world.
However I'd not use these explosions sound and sprites since we are in space xD but that is a minor nitpick

Great idea, looks cool. Tends to have a cascade failure effect, does the debris disappear?

Quite unforgiving, since debree does not collide with other debree you have lost as soon as 2 collide and have no way to recover. But at least it looks awesome while going out.

Really stunning graphics.
It surely lacks some serious gameplay mechanic (things got repetitive after a little), but the idea is good and fits the jam theme.

Nice entry!

The graphics look great and just from the screenshots it seems like a fun game to play. I unfortunately dont have PC to download the game.

this game takes more time to download than seeing whole gamemehanics in video

Thanks for the comments guys!
I think this was everyones first game jam so there was some inexperience.
And yes there was too much focus on making things look great and not enough on gameplay.
Choosing the latest Unreal engine was also a bad idea since lots of people report issues running it and the file size is huge.

Hopefully we can do better next time!

Really pretty graphics, although there doesn't seem to really be a goal. If reaching 100% coverage was the goal I think the debris created is just a bit too much a penalty. Either way, great job for your first jam!

After +1000 debris, my PC started to slow down :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Amazing visual and clever idea! But it's really hard to predict satellite collision :astonished:

When theme was announced I googled "Running out of space", orbital debris was all over google images. I thought about using this idea, but would never have been able to execute like you did.

Game mechanics are functional, and fit the theme. Visuals are very good.

Could have done more to establish goals. Maybe have different types of satellites that have abilities like clearing debris, or being invincible.

Also, objects are not to scale. 1/10

lol jk

Overall good entry.

Finally i can feel like Elon Musk :D
But maybe i should not become the person in charge for putting sattelites into the orbit xD

It definitely is a great game =)

Great graphics and very interesting idea, good job!

Really cool game, visually excellent with simple but fun gameplay. Good job!
After 2000+debris its almost impossible to rotate camera and fps drop quite a lot :)

Pros:

Everything, good job guys!

Cons:

I want to destroy ISS too :)

Apart from great graph - good and tidy UI, fitting cosmos theme nicely. As others have mentioned - upgrading game mechanics (different types of satellites, trajectories etc), setting clear player goals would benefit game greatly. Very enjoyable experience!

This was actually extremely similar to an idea that was pitched in our team, however we were worried that there would be to little to do. I think we were wrong. Just finding the patterns to get as high of a coverage as possible is interesting enough to get me to play for 10 minutes. I’ll probably come back if one of my friends manages to beat my record :) The art is great, I’m a sucker for nice globes. The SFX and UI was clean and great to!

Hum I hope this game is not to realist ?
Its a prety good game, the gameplay is basic but work very well.
The physic motor since perfect.

I think is lake of feedback like pew pew from the satelite and Houston we have probleme .
After all is more a puzzle game than other thnigs, I have just a problem with game controler, I though axis control with the mouse is a bit difficult.
Great Jobs Guys

It looks really cool and it works smootly, however, it feels like one crash and it's game over because of the ripple effect of the debris. It does fit with the theme and the graphics are beautiful!

Beautiful game! Has a nice feel and everyhing comes together really nicely.
I played the game for a decent amount of time, and felt like coming back and play again a few hours later!
The gameplay lacked a little bit of depth. The highest score I managed was 88% coverage, and that was when I spammed satelites like a maniac.
Wished there was a little bit more strategy to it.
The debris was way too punishing. After the first satellites blew the run was over. There was no room for misstakes.
But it's still one of the best games I playes so far. Would play it again.

I was placing them in a line, got almost 30 of them. Accidentally placed one off a little bit, couldn't see anything, just heard the BOOM over and over. Killed a little piece of me. I liked it though, great looking game.

Stunning visuals, very polished!
As for the game, it might be good to also add the possibility to collect the debris, otherwise the game is pretty much over after the first collision due to the chain-effect the debris has.
