The Adventures of Stickman in Macrosoft Doors! by Scott Purcival

[raw]
made by Scott Purcival for LD 42 (JAM)

gameplay0.gif

We decided to go with the ol' running out of hard drive space trope. Also, we have very few skills. I am a programmer, and I roped in my wife, my nephew and a friend who all have zero game making experience, to make a game in 72 hours! As such we plan to win by silliness. Please enjoy our incredibly naive frolic through game development. :D

Features: - Epic Platforming Action! - Hand Drawn Art! - Computer Drawn Art! - Badly Drawn Art! - Hilariously bad voice over Narration! - Silliness abounds!

Tools Used: Unity3D Visual Studio Adobe Photoshop & Audition Clip Studio Paint GarageBand A whole bunch of random objects around the house and our voices! Pen and paper!!

(17/08/18) UPDATE:- There are two versions below titled LATEST and CRAPPY respectively. The CRAPPY version has the as submitted at LD42 controls - a little skatey and more challenging. The LATEST version has revised controls (bugfixed - if you will) that should be easier to control. I literally changed one line of code... from "AddForce()" to ".velocity =" - which seems to have made all the difference in the world. Turns out my 'best practice' use of the physics system was not best for players. Oh well! First 2D platformer I have made so bound to learn something! XD Enjoy!

Super music, cool sound effects! I like the concept, and how there is a bit of variety across the levels. If I could change one thing, I would reduce the inertia in the control, I had difficulty controlling stickman.

This game is so funny to play, i love the voice when you collect things or die! The visuals are really nice, and even though the character is a stick man, you nailed the animations for it!

Good job on the game! I really liked the assets you used to create your game, if they were all done by you then amazing work! Only thing I would change is tweak the movement controls so that the character doesn't have so much inertia, I lost a lot of enjoyment because it was too hard to do a basic jump right in front of me because I would go flying half way across the map.

My first 5 star in a category right here! That was absolutely brilliant! Who thought of adding the guy talking and the ads is pure genius! That being said, and this is just because i nitpick a lot to give feedback even though it doesn't fully represent my voting, the character feels "too floaty" for me, especially while in mid air. Very well made and you guys should be proud!

The voice acting made me laugh. The premise is well done and I liked the random file names and stuff (I know it sounds like something you would see on a cat poster...)

Controls were a little difficult. I would often slide off of the platforms and making the precision jumps was difficult. Some of that is the Unity 2d physics but it could use some tweaking.

Animations and presentation were great!

@minibobbo @seannewman22 @panda something not mentioned is that stickman will try and anticipate when you are trying to stop and will apply a decel. if you tap the key opposite to the direction you are going when or just before he lands he will stop pretty much instantly. perhaps this will help? Cheers!

@seannewman22 hey Sean, thanks, yes we made a point of creating all art and audio during the jam. Really appreciate the appreciation man! :D
The art is the work of 3 ppl: Characters - Tobias Burwood, Environment - Scott Purcival and Jay Purcival

Loved the game, liked the concept and the art. The thing I disliked the most was how difficult it was to control the MC. Great job though!

Good concept! I liked the voices, ads and the overall level design! I found the controls a little too clunky though. Difficult to control especially with long jumps. Overall, Well done!

Damn that was a crazy game. Really well thought out. Nice graphics and some hilarious audio (music / voice). Only problem I had were the controls. It was way to hard to navigate

I can only repeat what others have said before me: really fun game, especially the audio was hilarious. What makes it even cooler is the team you have composed right there xD. The player was a bit hard to control mid air though.

All in all, good entry!

Good use of the theme! Enjoyed the voice-over work, and good humor in the file names and such. Again, motion controls were a bit difficult to control, but entertaining!

Thankyou so much everyone for your great feedback. We knew the controls were an issue going in, and we thought we had sorted them out, but I think it's a case of the old 'dev getting godlike at their own game' regardless of the flaws. The last level is a prime example. My nephew can do it in the par time. It took me 5 minutes to nail the final jump.
Definitely going to write my own physics next time. Unity physics is a bit too squidgey for me. 🤣

Kinda fun, although I could not finish the second level. Controls are like guiding an epileptic skater with Parkinson's Disease over ice.

@godsboss do you think its allowed for me to tweak the controls at this stage or is that a new feature and not a bug fix...

Hehe, this game is hilarious!! Challenging controls but I was able to beat the first few levels and I love the little stick man animations. Nicely done :)

THE MOVEMENT IS A NIGHTMARE!!! Really humorous game, it really made me laugh! Aspecially with the sounds and art. But how come all Unity platformers are so hard to play??? Like, when I move, then I need to press the arrow key in the opposite direction to stop myself, because if I won't, I'll glide waay too far! What type of controlling is this?? If not for that, I would have probably finished this game. :rage:

OK, I think I got everyone!
I have uploaded a new version where the buggy controls have been fixed. By no means do I expect a replay from anyone, but if you do happen to try out the new controls can you please comment on if they are better or not?
Left old(original) version up in the links too.
Thanks!!

I never knew I needed an announcers voice playing every time I grabbed and deleted a file, but now don't know how I'll live without it. Nice work!

Really loved the art and sound effects, just a shame about the jumping controls really. I've also had problems where a single line of code ruins everything in a game jam lol. Played the fixed version and it's a lot more fun, but unfortunately I have to rate the original version.

Had great fun loved the style and the music , really liked the attention to detail on the jump landings (on folders) that little bump just gave it something extra. All and all a well done game would have loved some powers or something but that's just because I want more ways to .... "CHUCK IT IN THE TRASH!" :P
