Lightbulb by somethinboutgames

[raw]
made by somethinboutgames for LD 39 (COMPO)

An idle game all about keeping the power up, for as long as you can. Will you last minutes? Hours? Days???

To pass the time, you can use the mouse to play with the lightbulb. Absolutely useless, but fun nonetheless

'P' to recharge

'H' for help

I apologize if I, again, messed something up with the Mac and Linux exports. Please let me know what I did wrong so I can fix it, thank you :)

It seems like you never run out of power in this game, but it is still absolutely incredible.

@tj-reynolds it's supposed to take a long time so you can have it open in the background and check in every few minutes. Right now it is set to completely run out of power every 30 minutes, it alerts you if it's on 20 percent though...

Thanks for playing :)

@somethinboutgames Was about to give it a try but I guess you messed something up with the Linux build. Looks like the data files are missing in the archive.

@gagapete I think it should work now. I'd be grateful if you could test that for me :)

I kinda wish there was more to do in the game, but what there is, is very nice. I really like the sound effect when you hover over the bulb, I thought that was a nice touch.

There really isn't much to say. The game looks really nice but it really is just a game of "press a button to not die".

I really like the whole playing with the bulb thing, though

The game looks nice and I have to admit that I spent 5 min playing with the light bulb, but I do have to say I expected there to be some 'hidden features', that you're supposed to find, like in Please, Don't Touch Anything or other similar games. Overall: I liked the look of the game, but was disappointed it wasn't very deep.

It wasn't really fun cause you just press that one button. But it was fun playing the the wonky light bulb physics

Interesting concept but wasn't my cup of tea.

I liked the Graphics of it, but id liked to have some more features, like secrets or soleting or stuff to hit with the lightbulb.
Overall nice job.

Ha, charming game. Reminds me of "Watch paint dry", in that game you also have plenty of ways to kill time while you are just waiting / watching. Pretty well done lightbulb physics, it was actually entertaining to swing it around.

I can verify the Linux version is working now. :penguin: I noticed your downloads are no longer tagged by platform on itch. This makes it no longer possible to install the game with itchs client.

A fun little experience. As others mentioned some secrets would be nice like randomly swapping the bulbs shape after it leaves the visible area. The timer may be replaced with some kind of power measuring display.

@gagapete thank you, I fixed the platform thing now, too :)

The background color changes with your powerlevel, the goal should've been to keep it up for as long as possible, maybe even multiple hours. I realize though, that I didn't really make that clear or entertaining for that matter

The game feels more like a desktop toy/widget for me, but it's fun to play with the bulb! As people said, hidden stuff, easter eggs or other secrets could add something to engage the players a bit more, still it's fun. :D

I liked the subtle sound effects (they felt a bit too low here) and how it pans the sounds on the stereo spectrum.

Good job there! ;)

The graphics are nice and simple, the gameplay isn't the most exciting but it's quite fun playing around with the string for a while. I spammed P quite a bit and am not sure when it will eventually run out of power, perhaps a power bar or something would be useful to see how long I have left?

Overall, a nice little time waster :P

Well that was interesting. I"m not sure it was exactly fun but it kept me busy sort of like a fidget cube :)

I have a thing for minimalist games...

Likes:
- lovely rubbery band effect
- I finally have something to do while waiting for my internet to come back up

Try differently:
- I think I tapped P so fast, I maxed out the bulb for a long, long time...

Overall:
- different from all the games I played
- still fun! :)
- PRO TIP: Pulling the bulb across two 1440 wide and one 3440 wide screens and then letting go is EPIC

Very nice game! The graphics are nice and the subtle sound effects were a nice touch. The mechanics of the game like the rubber band effect on the light bulb were solid and the game play was simple, but still kind of fun to play with like pulling the light bulb all the way back and watching it fly around in circles. More stuff to do like more buttons to press, achievements to unlock, or even hidden eater eggs would be nice but overall nice job with your little game.

For me the words *idle* and *game* don't go well together.

Games are about choosing actions to win and not to lose. Sometimes taking no action is the right call, but to do that all the time? It all becomes trivial to say the least.

I like to call clickers and other idle software *time wasters*, but one of my more diplomatic friends suggested *passive experiences*. I'm fine with that. Watching paint dry sure is an experience, if you can stomach it.

I like the physics though.

The physics are perfect! I think it's really good to try to go somewhere different each ludum dare, three days of learning new stuff really fast. Funny idea a bit empty for a game but I think today I'll key the window opened, just in case the bulb turns off.

Very fun gameplay concept and it was well implemented. The graphics and the "game feel" were really good too. Good job!

I tapped P a bunch and then didn't really have any consequence to doing nothing. It is a neat minimal idea but I think it needs an upper bound on the amount of charge the lightbulb can have at any time.
