Server Manager by kraftkar

[raw]
made by kraftkar for LD 43 (COMPO)

ld43screen3.png Sort of a mashup of Breakout and Space Invaders, with a hint of Missile Command.

  • Rotate servers = arrow keys
  • Rotate shield1 = A and D
  • Rotate shield2 = W and S
  • Pause menu = SPACEBAR (you might have to tap twice, I think I forgot to initiate a bool somewhere)

This year I wanted the mechanics to mirror the theme. Given the theme "Sacrifices must be made" I decided to have the player make sacrifices willingly as part of gameplay.

You play as a server admin, manually swapping servers around to process incoming data while protecting them from attacks. When a server crashes it will loose any data it recieves, and if you loose too much data you loose the game. In later levels, if you get overwhelmed, you can reject (block) incoming data, "sacrificing" the data to stay in the game.

(In hindsight, "sacrifice" is too strong a word, since it's just data. But the thought was there!)

Originally I wanted to let you pick upgrades after processing certain amounts of data. Due to time restrictions I made levels instead where I gradually introduce each new mechanic. I tried to set spawn rates, win and loss conditions and server arrangements to give you a challenge while learning the new mechanic.

There could be some balancing issues due to lack of playtesting, but I hope you find the game both challenging and fun!

Really good game. I love the graphical style of blue on black reminds me of the game Uplink. I gotta say I did find the difficulty curve of this game to be a little steep especially level 7 with the military files. I think part of the difficult stems from the fact as the player at that point I cam controlling two small shield, one big shield, and the servers. All while using WS to rotate one shield AD to rotate the other two shields and left/right arrow to rotate the server while looking out for yellow spam. It gets a little crazy.

Wow this is quite impressive. The stages are very well made and offer the right amount of challenge without ever feeling unfair (except the final one, ugh). There either went a lot of care into the balancing or a lot of luck with making the levels. Great submission! Hopefully you get some more ratings!
