Space Defender 2000 by Sambi

[raw]
made by Sambi for LD 42 (JAM)

Shoot your way through enemies to collect coins and buy upgrades!

Post Jam Updates:

  • Game difficulty and pace modified to make the game faster to play
  • Fixed some enemies that weren't working because of missing references etc.
  • Fixed Mines since they were completely broken (again missing references)
  • Rolled back to old style of aiming (and forgot to offset the hotspot of the cursor, but oh well)

It's a ok game.

The controls are not good, its almost impossible to aim, if the cursor wasn't locked in a fix distance to the player, being free to move around, the game would be a loot better. Right now the controls are just bad.

In other hand, the graphics are quite nice.

I like the art really cool style, but I also think the aim should be a bit better, try to decrease a bit the sensitivity of the mouse and should be good =D
Also I don't know if there are different types of enemies because i would die a bit fast xD but it would be awesome if there are!

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, the sensitivity of the controls were a bit off since I intended this originally to be played with a controller and that had to be a bit more sensitive to work and didn't have time to fix that. Setting your mouse's DPI to 50 or something ridiculously low might help.

There are 4 different kinds of enemies and you get to see them after you kill certain amounts of enemies (25, 50 and so on).

Cool graphics. How would it be if the enemys fly a straight line? It's quite hard to shoot and run awayXD Like the game system with buying and the store!

I recommend making the game less punishing so people can progress further and see more of it. You worked hard to make it, try your best to have everyone see the entire thing! (it could've used lives or an HP bar)

Now on feedback:
- The game mechanics were a bit boring (at least the ones I got to experience, sorry, didn't play until the mines or looper gun). Your approach to the theme could've been better.
- I liked the art, especially style, as well as mucic and mood setting. The firing animation is cute. Those parts did feel pretty polished imo.

Congrats on your game, I hope you enjoyed making it!

I love the dithering effect you used. Looks good.

The gameplay is quite difficult, but I don't mind that. It would be nice if the game automatically restarted though after you die so you didn't have to keep pressing restart.

The aiming is unorthodox when played with a mouse. It's not that hard to aim, but it becomes part of the challenge. I imagine if you used a twin stick gamepad it would be much easier.

@donitz @gajop @swini @abyster @samueldeboni @otmani-yacer Since I found several game breaking bugs and the aiming was horrible (I agree on that) I made an update with little fixes to those. And upped the pace of the game since it seemed like none saw any of the other enemies I made (not that they are much different from the basic enemy).

@otmani-yacer Well I don't know exactly  . This is my first time taking part in a Ludum Dare. There is the rule that you "can" fix bugs if the game is not working correctly, but you must highlight the changes you've made... hopefully I'm right.

Liked the game :)! It wasn't too easy, so that gives it good replay value ^^! Really liked the art style and that you could buy updates, that motivated me to keep on playing even though I'm not that good at it, just to try them all out c:

This would make a nice twin-stick shooter, although it does work well with a mouse for shooting. Nice graphics.

I liked it, I don't think it's too difficult. Upgrading firerate is broken and after a while the game gets easy. I like spamming mines. :L You did a great job creating a graphical style that stands out! I may have to download the source to learn about this pixelated effect.

My controls kept bugging out (which was the only reason I died), I think that's an issue with the Web Player or something.

Loving the art style and sound effects, the game feels very polished and juicy. The gameplay is simple, but well executed.

Very cool game, awesome presentation! My advice - make the coins disappear in a different way. When they moved upwards I thought I'm supposed to collect them, maybe they could disappear instead?

@lilkrit so like without the little vertical movement at all? Did the coins rotate, shrink and disappear? Because that is what they are supposed to do. Just making sure I understand what is wrong with the current animation.

Nice, the graphics look great! Do you use some kind of shader to make it murky-like? The animations and the feel of the game where better than I expected, the sound is also great and music fits the atmosphere perfectly. Well done!

It's a fun space shooting game. I especially like the pixel animations and effects in your game such as the shining star sky, the glowing planet on the top right corner (is that the sun?), the cute shooting animation, and the shape morphing animations of enemy planets. I wonder how you made those animations as some of them are not like frame animations. The huge planets look quite exciting. However I notice that there is no hit effect when the bullet hits a huge planet although the bullet can cause damage. Another obvious issue is control, I notice that sometimes some direction keys would not work, and this issue always made me lose the game. Besides the control issue, I think your game is quite fun to play, and overall I think you did great job in this game jam!

@atom0520 Thank you for playing and commenting  ! I used the fastest way I know to animate thing: scaling and rotating things with Unity's own animation tools :flushed: . You are right I should've added some kind of hit effect to the big planet. Maybe an universal effect to when hitting any planet in case I made some planets that have more HP. Those big planets were one of the last additions I made to the game so it is also buggy :D. Oh, that problem with controls I've not encountered myself... Hmm...

@sambi Thank you for the explanation! The scaling and rotating animations look quite well. The control bug might be related to web player or browser. Good luck!
