Super Hyperspace Rythm Plus Ultra by Kichex

[raw]
made by Kichex for LD 41 (JAM)

For LDJam 41!

From the "two incompatible genres" theme we mixed rhythm game and bullet hell.

Intro.PNG

About the game:

This game was created during the Ludum Dare #41, the theme being "Combine 2 incompatible genres", thus giving birth to (hopefully) the first bullet-hell rhythm game came into this world. Everything form the enemy movement, to the bullets shoot by both player and enemies, the lights, and enemy spawns are dictated by the rhythm of the music, this was achieved using "Apollo" (https://kikep.itch.io/apollovisualizer), a pretty nifty sound processing system created by our team member Enrique Perez (Kichex), which made streamlining the creation of the game a lot more easier, additional features include a global score system (created by Camilo Monsalve (Beren)), so anyone that plays the game can try and immortalize his 3 letter nickname for the world to see :D.

How to play:

Move your ship using the WASD keys, aim with the mouse, bullets will shoot automatically as the music plays. can you survive till the end of the song and rack a high score ?

Updates:

Sup hoomans, people, Apache helicopter, plants and cats, specially cats, I'm pleased to announce that after a long heated debate that may or may not have involved table flipping and chair throwing we have decided to update the game taking into consideration all the feedback received, and so, without further ado, please enjoy the new and improved "Super Hyperspace Rythm Plus Ultra DELUX" !

About the Post-jam (Delux) version:

It features several changes and improvements, added effects and player feedback as well as some balance changes which should make the game a lot more enjoyable (if that was even possible!).

It's beautiful. The lights, the sound, the patterns, the vibe, and on top of all that IT'S ON LINUX. Seriously, I found it great eventhough I had hardly a clue on what was going on.

from the recommended donation amount I can see this game was made by some true intellectuals.

actually pretty well made. had surprising amounts of fun. the music and visuals were really nice

It looks like you're using object pooling for the projectiles. which is fine, until the trails get drawn from wherever the bullet blows up and your ship, then it just kinda muddies the visuals.

not entirely sure how to fix that though? maybe theres a way to restart the trail and remove all previous segments, but then whenever the projectile gets destroyed the whole previous trail just... disappears instantly. if you're using a queue to store all the projectiles, maybe once one is destroyed, you leave it at the location where it blew up, and only turn off the trail, move it over the ship, then turn it back on, the very frame that you fire it.

Dude @ORECROS, that is actually a great solution, i tried disabling teh trail and making sure it would be activated until the bulled had been correctly "instantiated" but to no avail, the tril seemed to have a life of it's own so I gave up since the time was almost coming up and I wanted to focus on uploading the games and having everything set up online but i will give that a try and see how it goes, i mean, at some point I just said to myself "well, it doesn't look that bad, seems to fit the game .

@Blinkenlights Really appreciated, all you have to do is move and try not to die, but i suppose i should add some instructions that makes it clear which one is you (the pink Cristal) and how to move about the map, I'll make some graphics and upload them shortly.

Ah I see we had some similar concepts with the idea of a Rhythm Top Down Shooter. I'd say yours was better though  The gameplay was solid, but I felt that some feedback was needed when the player was damaged. I wasn't able to keep track of my health and fend off enemies at the same time. Perhaps add a health bar to the player, and make the player stand out more. The background was problematic, as it distracted me from seeing the enemies. Apart from that, everything was great! I hope the scores reflect that

Also, the suggested donation price is :ok_hand:

Nice fun little game! The music and visuals working together make it a bit hypnotic at times (in a good way). Just kinda wished there was more time put to polish the "feel" of the action (more visual feedback when hit, screenshake, all that good stuff). Nonetheless, congrats for an excellent job!

@WRLCK Thanks a lot, that is something we realized was missing but there was very little time left and so we decided not to break what was working already, but it is something we regretted a lot as well, thanks for checking the game out :smiley_cat:

Really cool concept! The yellow enemies can be really hard to hit sometimes with how fast they move, but it's really fun!

The music is good and the graphics are really pretty! Thought the shooting effect of the player looks a little weird and the bloom can get a little distracting.

Overall, really fun game! and interesting concept.

Really fun! At first I was confused as to what the other genre was other than bullet hell but then the music slowed down after all the really fast stuff and all the guys slowed down and it became very apparent that it's bullet hell + rythem! Really great job with this game, I had fun playing it :D

True bullet hell ! Loved the colors and the glowy ennemies. Loved the fact that ennemies goes onto you with the music beat. Quite cool!
I had a little freeze when I hit the game over but nothing too important.

Definitely a feast for the eyes! I really love the 80s aesthetic, and the game itself is like a lightshow of sorts. It gets a little busy at times (but then again, maybe I'm just not destroying the enemies fast enough)! I think with more visual/aural feedback for when you deal and take damage, it could be even more satisfying to play.

Great job!

Pretty cool game you got there. Very pretty. A whole lot of stuff going on. Some more feedback on taking and giving damage would be really nice. last time I looked at my health I was at 100, then I was dead. Leader boards is always a nice touch.

I normally wouldn't link my own game in a comment, but we also did a rhythm game and so I thought you might like to give it a try. [Elite Beat Zombygons](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/elite-beat-zombygons)

@Archimagus I'll definitely check your game out.

@blobo it's alright, i'm also not very good at it, people already blew my score off of the leader board :P.

@Borodar Thanks a lot man, really appreciate it :D.

Cool game! Lot's of stuff going on. Maybe make it so the player has to manually shoot? I feel like there is no incentive for people to move except for the projectiles coming at them. I loved the music and overal feel of the project!

I’d love for you to review my submission as well.

I love the visuals! Would be more immersive with sound effects and a less static background (though only visually please, because I liked the reminiscence of Asteroids). But that's the only suggestions I have for you, since it feels pretty mature, otherwise. Nice name, btw. ;)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA This game is so coooooooooooooooooool! The graphics are beautiful and the music is sooooo goooood. Dude, really. Your bass is on point. The music sync is on point! The movement is perfect. The continuous shooting is just there. Congratulations!

@Rahtainka Thanks a lot, sadly a web version was not possible due to unity limitations when it came to so the sound analyzer (trust me, we tried) :( , but thanks a lot for your kind words n_n
Q-ro
26. Apr 2018 · 03:34 UTC
@Lucas-Carvalhaes , We just thought rhythm and bullet-hell was not really possible or at least hard to mix game-play wise, like when we thought of rhythm in terms of games like guitar hero and so we initially thought it may not be too compatible to have a fast moving game with time based inputs to the rhythm of the music, but eventually we circumvented those limitations and landed on this game's game-play. but if you think about it, everything would be incompatible till someone finds a way to make it work.

Those geometry wars style neon visual style is somehow always kind of pleasing. I thought the rhythm aspect was a bit too subtle, I had to reread the description to figure out what it was. Felt like the challenge/difficulty should have been maybe been higher. I find for this kind of last as long as you can/high score game a lot of the fun is if its really difficult to survive more than about 5s, maybe thats just me.

@Jonathan Whiting Glad you liked it! I've just played Mussel and I really liked it! great soundtrack and the game feel sure gives a punch. Sometimes the camera shake is too intense and the bomb effect is nice but a bit confusing. Loved the enemy patterns too. Keep it up man! do you have any devblog to follow you?

This is one swanky bullet hell you got there m8 I ain't so big on bullet hells usually but there the rhythm really adds to the concept - it's almost like the enemy pieces are playing theatre or whatnot, like they have intentions, that can be felt through the music - that + the synthwave graphical theme! Oh and the title cracks me up - anyhow, really enjoyable experience, nice one guys :-D

Graphics and audio were great but some sound fx would be nice too. I don't know if I can really vote for audio though since I didn't hear any sfx and the music wasn't made by you guys. It seems like there's too many enemies and nothing the player can really do to avoid it all. I personally didn't really feel like I was achieving much of anything. Where are the scores saved? I think my score was 827 lifetime 427. Progressing great though so far, Great job!

I personally think this is a very well done bullet hell- rhythm game hybrid. It's enjoyable as a game, but then the mechanics being tied to the track takes it to the next level. I really enjoyed it. Great graphics, great programming. Good job!
