Holy Shit! A Spider !!! by Aurelien
Spiders are not really loved. One could even say that there is some discrimination against them. This game is the one to denounce that.
Made for the Ludum Dare 38, theme: A Small World, in 72 hours. Because if spiders were not so small, humans wouldn't treat them so unfairly :(

You can share your high-score in the comments, I wonder how far people can push it!
Game is on itch.io. Playable on Windows, Mac and Linux.!

My special thanks to Yannic and Tim that gave me their voices for the game.
Hope you enjoy it!
( I got into game dev since 3 weeks ago, I'm learning a lot, your feedbacks are really appreciated. If you want to see more from me, follow me on itch.io, I already made a new game for a 1 dollar challenge. Check it out: https://satalien.itch.io/cuteness-overload )

Also appreciate that you don't inevitably die, you can save your big spiders.
Very well done!
It's funny how tunnel vision-ed it made me get though trying to avoid everything. I think this is one of the most intense-kind-of-fun games I've played so far tonight out of the 12 or 15 I've checked out so far!
First impression I had of this game - hahahaha I love the voice - HOLY SHIT! A SPIDER!! hahah that was such a cool intro! I loved the voice over narration? or just background talking? not sure how to call it but it was really cool. Sound effects are awesome and perfectly fitting. The variety of obstacles / things trying to kill you mae it really fun and challenging (i didn't notice the newspapers fir 2 times.....) gameplay is as straight forward as it gets, avoid things that try to kill you and eat things XD
Very fun and entertaining game to play, very good graphics and sound effects. I also give the voice actors a credit for the hilarious background talking and hilarious dialogues. My favorite dialogue part was- "Why all this violence? what did it do to you? ~ IT EXISTS!!!!" hahahaha :D pretty much reaction of every person everto a spider xD or, mostly everyone.
Overall really cool and fun to play game, loved it!
p.s. it's definitely worth mentioning the extra attention to details such as the shaking of the table and the spray effect
Thank you for the feedbacks people, I want mooooore :D
"Sorry man, I'm vegan."
I love the banter between the two characters. Putting a light on each piece of meat was really smart as well, or it helped me quickly find them with all the details as the game progressed.
I frequently underestimated the length of the newspaper, and often got squished from that, rather than my size, which was a little frustrating, but I was also probably being a bit too risky.
Overall, a really strong entry. Good work!
Very fluent gameplay! Rather than the audio part, I love the design most, for the game would lose lots of fun without the score-multiplier and the progress saving (by pressing space). I feel trapped into a dilemma between pressing space and not pressing when the spider gets bigger, and it's really funny to see my choice turn out to be better or not. :D
- Gameplay is so awesome that player has to play again and again
- grphics is very good
- i was able to make 231 score played like 15 times
I like this game!
I really enjoyed your friend voice acting hehe, it added a lot of personality on the game.
The only thing I would suggest is to have the multiplayer visibile on the interface to show the consequence of "saving the spider".
Very good game! Congrats!
(You can see me playing this game for the first time on the vod https://youtu.be/ov_ysaa5zlQ?t=8m54s )
I am looking for something bad to say but not finding it
I reached 276 points. No I am not ashamed at all, I proudly defended the spider people.
Fun game, as others have said the commentary really adds to the experience. Theres nice variety in threats to the spider. The sound effects are good. Only disappointing thing was seeing the better scores after i tried so hard :sob:
Love the Sounds. They added something personal to the game.
The sound also boosted the athmosphere.
"What did they do to you?" "THEY EXIST!!"
I hate spiders and I felt quite identified with some of the dialogues. But I liked your game!
Congrats!
@sagarpatel25700 Thanks a lot! Always cool to see that people find it good
@christian-koch The freezes happens only with the WebGL version. I'm really new at all that so I don't know where it comes from. You can still try the downloadable version if it's really not playable :p Thanks for your comment.
@chloravirgo and @zarkonnen I outted myself from audio because the sounds and music, except the voices, are not from me. Since it plays a lot in the mood of the game, I didn't want to take the room against people that made everything themselves.(And this is often very impressive)
And comparing my game with The Stanley Parable is a little bit too much  (I LOVE that game)
@camilo "I hate spiders"... oh no! my spider ~~propaganda~~ game is not working at changing mind as it should!
Glad you liked the lines :p
Simply and audio is fun! Good work
It's very well put together, doing everything nicely, from sound, music and graphics/animation to tight controls and wisely placed hitboxes. Best of all was the clever way the difficulty escalated and the risk/reward tradeoff that kept a very tense feeling the whole way through.
My high score was 2397, and I was being SUPER greedy by the end to get there. I used two or at most three spiders to get there.
There's almost nothing to complain about in this game because all the details were right. I had just one small bad moment, the first time I saved my spider, there was a spraying can and my new small spider spawned and auto-walked right into the spray and died immediately, which felt unfair.
I've got to say again what a nice balance there is in the risk/reward from the multiplier vs the danger of a large size. Strong design choice that made the game.
Excellent entry.
EDIT: Voice lines were good but I agree w opting out of sound given music and effects were not original, but still good choice/usage.
Congratulations, I think you are the first to beat the dev high-score (2000), well done! Now I want to beat that :p
I'm aware of that bug with the spraycan, I'm not sure if I'm allow to fix since the judging already started. I also don't have much time since I'm already working on a new game going out soon! (follow me on itch.io)
Thank you again for your very long and constructive comment
Well done!
The dialogue almost works really well but to me it seemed a bit forced or cringy in places.
Overall good game and I'm glad I found it!
One issue right off the bat - no matter when exactly I squished space to save the spider, the small one marched right into the spray and died before I regained control of it (i.e. before arrows were responsive). That feels a tad unfair :)
That being said, as @lancescaterpie noted, basically seamless game loop is awesome. Whole idea is fun, and besides that issue I had with ...respawn? Dunno how to exactly call it :) the rest plays well and responds as intended.
Not much more to say actually, game is good as it is. Maybe with some more polish on the graphics/UI front it could be a quite good commercial game - for mobile, for example? I'm curious to see how it will develop further :)
Cheers!
Just thinking out loud: you could add more challenges such as: a glass could come down and trap you then, you have a tiny window of opportunity to escape when they try and slide a piece of card underneath the glass!
The voice samples were amusing too but I had to turn them down due to the proximity of children!
Excellent work.
@richard-michael-smith That's funny, I had EXACTLY this idea. But didn't had time to implement it. The animation would have not been easy to do for that also.
The design was good, the idea was clever... the added audio was pretty funny. (Esp the intro) Well done!
