Claustrophobic Cobra - Reverse Snake Action by Juno

[raw]
made by Juno for LD 42 (JAM)

Description

It's like snake, but you're running out of space instead of growing larger Eat pellets to re-expand the play area and survive for as long as possible in this action-packed, lightning fast narrative experience

Features

  • Silky smooth framerate
  • Crisp, hand drawn (title) artwork
  • Challenging gameplay that will push you to the limit
  • Unique, never before seen gameplay

Controls

WASD/Arrow keys - Move the snake

Installation

Just unzip the file and play the executable, it should be like all the other Unity games

Tips

  • Eat the pellets to expand the play area. Eating the pellets also has a side effect of increasing the game speed.
  • Periodically, random tiles will be selected to be removed. There's a 3 second warning with a red circle over the tile to warn you ahead of time, so avoid those.
  • Expanding the play area also refills any tiles that were removed randomly there.

Context

As this was our first Ludum Dare submission, my first game jam, and one of us was quite busy we wanted to make a very simple game as to take it easy and not underestimate the deadline. Overall it was a fun experience and a good opportunity to relearn Unity development.

Fun little game, not overly original, but has responsive controls and menus. Not much to fault, might be more fun/difficult if the *cough* snake *cough* cobra grew longer as you got pips, similar to another game.

You should avoid putting collectibles at the edge of the plate since it will shrink. It results in the sensation of having been tricked rather than dying by real mistake. Especially on the first play.

An OK game right there! The classic snake game with some original stuff.

One issue I notice is that if you put the collectible on the edge, you wouldn't be able to pick it.

Thanks for the input, I guess I should've made the pellets more reachable, because when one spawns on the edge there's not much to do except wait until a new one spawns in a better location.

also @azo I wanted the game to be fully about the space running out instead of worrying about running into yourself, so the difficulty comes from the game slowly getting faster instead. Thanks for the tip though

I'm not sure why it's a snake, as you can't run into yourself, and I wish it moved just a little bit faster, but overall, great job!
