LD42 - GraveWorld by Azo

[raw]
made by Azo for LD 42 (JAM)

This is my Submission for the LD42 Jam. Try to survive on an undead world, and try not to run out of space as new graves emergegraveworld Thumbnail.gif!

I decided to go for the Jam as I was away for most of Saturday, leaving me only 2 and a bit days. As a first Ludum Dare I played it safe and went for the Jam, and I'm glad I did, as even with that length of time I didn't manage to get any sound or main menu in before the deadline. I hope you enjoy!

CONTROLS

A / left arrow --- move anticlockwise

D / right arrow -- move clockwise

space ------------ attack

This is my first Ludum Dare so I would really appreciate any and all feedback. Now playable on web.

Its nice, the walking is really odd upside down, which is interesting. attacks should be faster for better feedback.
needs sound!

@marcovalekaz Thanks for the feedback! I ran out of time for sound and menus, but I am going to update this in the next few days

Definetly needs some music to up the mood. Otherwise, cool idea, I love the one-hit mechanic. The theme was followed, but the gameplay needs a bit more development to be really fun. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but not for long since it's simple.

graphics are awesome - would have loved to have some sound and maybe some more in depth mechanics

Thanks for all your feedback! I am going to work on a main menu, and make a game over and game won screen with a few stats on it. Music is in the works but I unfortunately ran out of time in the Jam.

Congrats on your first LD! Good work with the art, sounds like you worked alone, so pretty impressive you managed to throw it together with some code, too. I think this could be a lot more enjoyable if you just cranked it up and had these ghosts spawning faster. Also, since they are white, you can give them a random color when they spawn to add some more color to the game, if it's what you're going for.

Weird walking indeed when upside down, but it's still a nice game ! That's quite an unexpected link to the theme running out of space ! It's great ;) The way you display remaining life is super cool !

Nice. I liked the circular level. The art is also nice to look at. One thing I would recommend is some feedback when you hit/kill a ghost. It was a bit hard to see if I killed it or it got me.

Audio would definitely make for a better mood, especially for the ghosts and swinging your sword. Also maybe make the walking a bit faster? altough that might make it too easy. Lastly, as others have said, the upside down walking is a bit awkward, but not game breaking or anything.
Overall I do quite like the low poly graphics and simple gameplay, but audio does keep being a big part of a game. Nice job for your first Ludum Dare!

@jaydee thanks for the feedback! I will try and build the mood up when i put the music in. The circular movement was a problem from the start, but i think it means that a bit of practice goes a long way, and progression should keep players playing. (hopefully)
@thijs-tak thanks! As mainly a programmer, I was very pleased with the graphics I put together for this one, and it's nice to see that people appreciate it. Audio in works, so should be more feedback for the ghosts in the future, I will make sure to differentiate the two events.

For some reason, the graves stopped spawning after I destroyed all of them, and I did it without losing a heart, so either I got lucky or the game is too easy (I tried a second playthrough and same happened, graves didn't spawn anymore).
Despite the lack of difficulty, I think it misses a little something to keep the player entertained (some extra feature), but you probably didn't have time ; also the attack animation does not coincide with the move animation.
Overall there are some things that would benefit from being implemented (like an end screen if you destroy all the graves) and it has potential, great work doing this in two days !

@zessirb Yeah, the graves stop spawning at the moment because i was planning on having a better system to ramp up the difficulty, but ran out of time to implement it. End screen is in the works (planning on having time taken, points, points per min or similar), and moving attack animations is a good idea. Thanks for playing and giving feedback!

A bit lackluster, with no sounds and missing a lot of visual feedback on the hits etc. and rather unclear game-play, so I cant really say to much about it. I do like the circle world, and the 3D models are not bad! The glowing and bobbing hearts are very cool. Needs a bit more work to reach a state where it can show its potential.

I like the graphics and the collisions seem to run smoothly. I like that there are game over conditions - although win conditions or a score would have been nice too. Audio would've been nice too. I liked the atmosphere and the graphics fit in with that. Lots of potential there.

For a first JAM it's impressive.
Games has a very simple concept, but it works well!

Nice graphics, shame about the rest of it. There's a few things that you could probably do to really improve this, firstly I'd make it so that your character can move faster, maybe add a jump? Some simple things like a way to see your score/timer, a few bits of game juice such as screenshake would go a long way to making the game feel responsive to your actions, and don't forget how important music and sound effects can be!

I'm guessing as this was your first jam that you probably mismanaged your time enough that you didn't get it playable for feedback before you submitted, and while having nice graphics is important, good gameplay always wins out. I hope to see you return for the next ludum dare, maybe join a team who need a good artist designer as you're clearly skilled there.
