Chickens For My Lord by Zayah0_0

[raw]
made by Zayah0_0 for LD 43 (JAM)

The Dark lord has requested the souls of chickens. Terrorize the farms and steal the souls of the chickens to feed the dark lords hunger.

Overcome the odds to satisfy The Dark Lord. some situations you can shoot you way out of so use your spell wisely.

It was hard to juggle the jam and studying but i powered through it and this is my entry. May not be the best game and i didn't get to implement everything i wanted but its playable from start to finish.

Update 0.1 -fixed enemy and player collision -fixed mode switching

I had fun playing this one. I got so shocked when they started shooting at me!

Is there a way to clear the first level? I assumed that I was supposed to go to the apple tree but couldn't find a path there.

This was a fun game. The farmers are deadly in groups though

Nice game, packing a healthy dose of humor and creativity. Kudos for having implemented a tutorial, as it makes the -quite high- difficulty of the game much more manageable.

Pros :
- Fun idea, fun graphics, fun audio
- The tutorial helps a lot
- Well designed levels
- Easy crowd control leads to fun situations

Cons :
- Controls issues : the mode switching is not always easy to do (using two different mouse buttons would help) and shooting requires button mashing (which I don't like, but it's my personal taste)
- Lack of feedback (sound/visuals/UI hard to decipher at times)

All in all, great job !

@zanagi you have to use the teleport ability while on 100..... theres 2 chicken inside to help you get back to 100

Very funny your game, I liked it, I spent a good time trying to kill all the chickens hahahaha

But in the case I had some problems with the collisions, the character gets trapped in the farmers sometimes when he lands, I can also cause that they are locked in the fence, which facilitates a little more the game

Congratulations on your engagement, I liked the idea.

Very fun and great idea. I feel like you could've done without the teleport, and just mapped the shooting and sucking to left and right click, but otherwise was responsive and satisfying.

There are some things that could be improved. The controls make it hard for me to move around and toggle the vacuum mode at the same time. I also think the level design could've been a little more intuitive. In general, it seems like the physics are what really need to be improved. They make it hard to get around in the levels, avoid enemies, and sometimes I even get stuck inside the enemies.

Some suggestions would be (and these are just my personal opinions) to add alternate controls for people like me who struggle to switch modes while also interacting with the environment-- preferably only one key, so there would be less chance of us accidentally pressing the wrong one. As for the trees, instead of doing nothing when the player hasn't reached the minimum amount of souls, perhaps there could be something such as a text popup to let the players know they need more. If the physics were improved a bit, so that you don't get stuck inside of things, the game would probably be much easier and feel less unfair.

In general, I do like the idea of this game. It's something I could see myself thoroughly enjoying if perfected, and for some reason I find the concept of going around sucking up chickens rather amusing! The graphics and music are nostalgic; they give me a similar feel to the Flash games I loved playing when I was younger. There are some things that can be improved, but overall this is still a neat game. Keep up the good work!

This is a great little top-down shooter. I like the way that ammo only comes from completing the primary goal, it pushed me to actually collect the chickens and dodge the farmers. The controls for this game were pretty good, moving the character around and shooting felt good. I think that while the background music was good the game could have used some sound effects for actions like moving and shooting, without them it was a bit samey while walking around and made it a bit harder to get into the action. Overall a really fun little game, great job!

Really had fun with this one. I like the art style and you fit the theme well. A few small problems: Some of the sprites were on the wrong layers. The barn for instance. I can walk under it. Also the gameplay felt a bit slow due to the movement speed the music was also a little repetitive. I still enjoyed it though :D Great work

This is a fascinating concept, and you could totally wring a fine game out of it. I enjoy the slow movespeed, especially since that gives me all the more reason to want to teleport. I thought there was an enjoyable balance between wanting to chase after chickens and dreading farmers. I felt powerful, but also had to consider my route before engaging big groups. Top work on the gameplay side.

On the other hand, for this genre, you've got to know that feedback is king. There are several points in this game during which a player might be confused about what's going on:

1.) Enemy bullets. Make these big and slow. Dodgeable is better than deadly. As is, I wasn't sure that the farmers were doing anything until I'd already lost quite a bit of HP.

2.) Hit sounds. Humans respond significantly faster to audio cues than visual ones. Even in the absence of big visible bullets, having some sort of "ugh" sound when you get hit (and even an impact sound when hitting enemies) will help players understand and enjoy what's going on.

3.) Gun state. It would be nice to have some kind of indicator on the gun itself what state it was in.

So.. many farmers. They attack me before i've even killed any chickens. T.T

A very amusing game.

Good job! It's playable! :) Next time, schedule 2-3 hours for polish, for example:

1. visual feedback on when you hit the farmers (splash some blood -- similar to when you suck in the chicken)
2. visual feedback when you get hit (screenshake maybe?)
3. sound effects -- they help to feed some more info back to the player, too, even if they're from BFXR
4. limit how often you can switch weapon modes + feedback

In the end, I think I caught all the chickens and killed everyone I could find, I still wasn't able to make it to the tree :D Maybe I'm lame?! Very likely :)

Very good that you put it online (WebGL).

Sorry for doing this so late, but I really like it. It's a pretty funny game and it's decently well polished. In particular, even small things like blood splatter and the vacuum spinning animation add up.

The only gripe I had with this was that I never felt that teleporting was really a sacrifice due the over abundance of chickens in each level. Then again, I only felt like I had to teleport once or twice per level.
