Pros :
- Fun idea, fun graphics, fun audio
- The tutorial helps a lot
- Well designed levels
- Easy crowd control leads to fun situations
Cons :
- Controls issues : the mode switching is not always easy to do (using two different mouse buttons would help) and shooting requires button mashing (which I don't like, but it's my personal taste)
- Lack of feedback (sound/visuals/UI hard to decipher at times)
All in all, great job !
But in the case I had some problems with the collisions, the character gets trapped in the farmers sometimes when he lands, I can also cause that they are locked in the fence, which facilitates a little more the game
Congratulations on your engagement, I liked the idea.
Some suggestions would be (and these are just my personal opinions) to add alternate controls for people like me who struggle to switch modes while also interacting with the environment-- preferably only one key, so there would be less chance of us accidentally pressing the wrong one. As for the trees, instead of doing nothing when the player hasn't reached the minimum amount of souls, perhaps there could be something such as a text popup to let the players know they need more. If the physics were improved a bit, so that you don't get stuck inside of things, the game would probably be much easier and feel less unfair.
In general, I do like the idea of this game. It's something I could see myself thoroughly enjoying if perfected, and for some reason I find the concept of going around sucking up chickens rather amusing! The graphics and music are nostalgic; they give me a similar feel to the Flash games I loved playing when I was younger. There are some things that can be improved, but overall this is still a neat game. Keep up the good work!
On the other hand, for this genre, you've got to know that feedback is king. There are several points in this game during which a player might be confused about what's going on:
1.) Enemy bullets. Make these big and slow. Dodgeable is better than deadly. As is, I wasn't sure that the farmers were doing anything until I'd already lost quite a bit of HP.
2.) Hit sounds. Humans respond significantly faster to audio cues than visual ones. Even in the absence of big visible bullets, having some sort of "ugh" sound when you get hit (and even an impact sound when hitting enemies) will help players understand and enjoy what's going on.
3.) Gun state. It would be nice to have some kind of indicator on the gun itself what state it was in.
A very amusing game.
1. visual feedback on when you hit the farmers (splash some blood -- similar to when you suck in the chicken)
2. visual feedback when you get hit (screenshake maybe?)
3. sound effects -- they help to feed some more info back to the player, too, even if they're from BFXR
4. limit how often you can switch weapon modes + feedback
In the end, I think I caught all the chickens and killed everyone I could find, I still wasn't able to make it to the tree :D Maybe I'm lame?! Very likely :)
Very good that you put it online (WebGL).
The only gripe I had with this was that I never felt that teleporting was really a sacrifice due the over abundance of chickens in each level. Then again, I only felt like I had to teleport once or twice per level.
