Space Runner by Guilhermoni

[raw]
made by Guilhermoni for LD 42 (COMPO)

In Space Runner you are literally RUNNING out of Outer Space. Your ship is fuelled by your running, you have to manage the oxygen you have left (blue) and your stamina (green). While in Outer Space, your Oxygen is drained and your Stamina fills up. While in a planets atmosphere, you regain Oxygen but you lose Stamina from all the running. It's a simple endless "runner" where you get points for collecting golden stuff and discovering planets. Carefull tho, the planets surface can be very... volatile. Keep your distance from shooting stuff out there. To play simply unzip the file, open SpaceRunner(PC/Windows) and double click SpaceRunner app. Have Fun and thanks for playing! Hehe - same game name :D. Could not find planets like in your screenshots though.

After you get the golden item just follow the radar on top of the ship, it will lead you to a planet.

Nice graphics, but the controlls are a little confusing

Really cool graphics! Reminds me of a next-gen version of the classic Asteroids game

@guilhermoni thanks for the clarification. Think overall the controls are indeed a little confusing. Good job on the graphics!
Edit:
Some audio would have been really nice to support the art style I think.

Yeah, i was excited for doing some audiowork, it would be the first time i did it on my own. The controls and overall mechanics took so much time to get working tho. I'm thinking about adding sound soon.

Well done! Graphics are amazing, and very unique. Other aspects are done well too, but unfortunately no audio (would have set the mood nicely).

Love the use of the theme, nice game with great graphics. Wish there were some sound effects/music but still a great entry.

Great arts, I like it!

The direction of 'W' and 'S' is kind of counter-intuitive for me (expect 'W' to go up and 'S' to go down).

Btw, for the HTML5 link, it says 'We couldn't find your page'.

@guilhermoni The link to your web build leads to a 404 page. Given that it is itch.io I would guess that the game's page just wasn't made public.

Great graphics and idea, but a shame the controls are so confusing. Also, I went in a straight line for about 2 minutes and nothing happened. Then the instant I stopped moving 20 meteorites spawned right next to me and I died. Not too sure what's up with that.

Anyway, great concept! :)

Graphics are a highlight, but figuring out more of the game took going to the comments, and at times the game felt unfair because the radar didn't lead me to oxygen quickly enough. Playing with the theme like that did produce a nice result here though. Would really dig some matching audio work.

Fun game. At first the input felt weird but it made sense pretty soon. Only problem i had was a lack of sound. I think it would add to the experience.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, really appreciate it, i will be working on this game for a while so i will take all you guys are saying in consideration. The web link is fixed now, it was just not public, thanks @smilewood!!!

Nice game! It took me a minute to figure out what I was supposed to do but I got it eventually. The art is nice and I love the tutorial you do in images. It would be even better with sound but that's a minor thing. Good work!

Loving the graphics on it and the animation of the running guy, wasn't really sure what I was supposed to be doing. Just found my self flying endlessly though space (which isn't always a bad thing). Still good tho.

Seems like the game could use a better overall tutorial. Will be working on that soon.

Hey, thats the second entry i saw that took the same approach as me with a space runner, but every one is different! I find the controls a bit confusing but liked the idea of how you teach the player how to use them. After a little practice i could manage the ship, at least to go where i wanted it to go. The graphics have an interesting style, different form what i am used to see, which i liked. It really laked sfx and a soundtrack, which i personally think would improve the game experience, but even without that it was a nice game.

I loved the sense of exploration - the world felt vast and the art was very calming. The controls did take a bit of getting used to, but once I got the hang of it, all was good. I'd really like to have another go at it with some sound effects, it would really bring the atmosphere together! Great entry!

Nice graphics, great mood.

I also find the controls counter-intuitive; and it seems, I have to press space, w, a, s at the beginning to be able to continue, otherwise the rocket continues to fly without any opponents or draining oxygen or the like. Didn't understand I have to fly in the direction of my antenna to find a planet, but I find this concept of in-game UI very cool.

IMO the game is extremely difficult, especially close to a planet.

@mshopf Thanks for the feedback. Yes, you have to press the buttons at the beginning, its kinda of a tutorial, then the real game begins, after you collect the first golden item. Its not as intuitive as i intended and i will be working on it. There are 2 kinds of planets that are REALLY difficult right now, and thats due to the lack of time for testing and balancing, hopefully i will take a look at that later on. Really appreciate the feedback, thanks!

Super cool game! The art is beautiful and the combination of exploration and in-game UI make it really immersive. I felt like gravity shift when getting near a planet was too jarring though -- made it very hard to stay in control.

Overall, a really awesome unique game!

Love the graphic. Especially that space guy running on a treadmill. Intuitively, i knew i had to collect the yellow things and avoid the rocks. Eventually, i learnt the controls better. But i didnt know my end-game/ end-level goal.
🎤 Guilhermoni
16. Aug 2018 · 19:57 UTC
@mza Thanks for the feedback. There is no actual "end game goal". You just go from planet to planet managing your oxygen and stamina getting more points. The more planets you visit and yellow things you collect, more points you get!

Love the hand-drawn graphics, they really give the game its charm. I didn't really figure out how to actually use a planet's atmosphere and the controls took some getting used to but I had some fun with it.
