Keyboard warrior by ango97

[raw]
made by ango97 for LD 42 (JAM)

Enjoy a simple Hack 'n Slash... with a devious twist on controls! It starts out easy - then you run out of SPACE! And A, D and W as well!

(Use A, D to move, W to jump and Space to attack. Initially.)

There are some easter eggs in there - say hi to the hedgehogs! And if you notice a key missing.... try pressing it!

The theme is well interpreted, quite literally in fact. Tell me one good reason why can't we cut the bullets in half :( ?
Cool little game ! You would gain in quality if you took time to polish the graphism.

The graphics are simple but effective! I really like the style. It took a while to find the artistic direction of our game. How long did it take for you?

Amazing. Thats one way think of the theme. Running out of Spacebar. Graphics are actually really cool. Why have fancy graphics if the game doesn´t need em? Took me a while to understand that key was missing already. Really confusing.

A really cool concept, graphics are nice and the way to play is really original, to have to change the touch and everything, great idea!

I love the idea of running out of the keys. I makes everything so lopsided hahaha

Ha, I love the literal keyboard interpretation of running out of space! I wish I had thought of it ;) Also, I think your art style is fantastic. The animation looked so smooth and natural. Well executed!

Nice and original concept, got stuck fighting against my keyboard instead of ennemies, kinda cool :)

i really loved this game i think the idea is so great! I don't know if you know of Bennet Foddy's work (QWOP, Getting Over It), but he talks about utilising the computer keyboard by designing games specifically for it, rather than using the keyboard as a controller substitute, and this is a great example of that. really great stuff! beautiful hand drawn animations as well! big score from me :)

Thank you all for the great feedback. The team's artist is overjoyed!
We've experimented with hand-drawn graphics a little in the past but following this success I am pretty certain that this will be the direction we'll follow in the future too.
And I'll keep bringing overly literal interpretations of themes. They are the most fun to come up with!
And yes, @sam-machell those are great games. QWOP is a true legend.

I love everything about this... except my own lack of skills to play this :) (my high-score was about 2500).

Really a cool idea!!! And I really loved the graphical part, it works very well. A suggestion for improvement would have to change the weapon from axe to firearm when a letter has been exhausted.

I liked this game! I liked your take on the theme, and the idea gameplay-wise was rather fun, especially since I had someone watching me play and failed. In the end it gets too confusing and difficult but I guess that's the idea, so well done. The art was pretty and coherent as well, congratulations :)

Nice take on the theme. Challenging but fun, thanks to animations and sound design.

Really nice graphic style.

Control scheme does get a lot wierd after a while. Though it doesn't seem to re-assign space, so you only run out of it once... So the theme is not totally implemented.

This is like playing twister on a keyboard. It starts easy but it becomes crazy after a while. I really like the sketch aesthetic and the sound effects. Good job.

@hilvon We made it so that it exhausts every single key first. If it needs to roll a new random one and all keys have been used, it resets the availability of every key.
Granted, it's pretty hard to survive long enough for that to happen :)

Interesting take on the theme! I really liked the art style and the game quickly became very difficult. I appreciate how you drew all the current controls on the bottom left of the screen, it saved me several times, haha

This is a bloody Twisted :D

I can't tell you how this game is hard to play on a azerty keyboard, the GUI just baited the shit out of me each time haha ! I like your game mecanism and it makes the game really tedious to play, that's an innovative and literal take !

I was really marveled by the art work (hand drawn is really beautiful !), and I'm really glad to see a game that uses an interface or GUI element as a kinda actual gameplay element, since it shows us the mapping + how many times before the function switches place on the keyboard !

Good job for this game :)

The WebGL site's down! Thought you might wanna know (I'll try the windows build in the meantime)

This caught me off guard in a good way! It gets extremely challenging once your controls get completely remapped. In my opinion it happens a bit too quickly, but that's just a balancing issue.

The style that you picked was consistent and rather pretty, quite refreshing to see!

Great job, keep it up!

I tried the windows build since Web isnt working.

This game is frustrating as hell... But a surprising take on the theme. I loved the style of the graphics and animations.

changing up all the keys makes this almost impossible to play, I think maybe a short break in the action to allow the player to get used to the new controls would help improve that.

I really enjoyed checking this game out! The core mechanic is super clever (though frustrating haha) and it was super fun to figure out new controls every so often. The art was really charming, and sounds created great ambiance and added a lot of character to the game, so awesome job. I loved it!

Cheers!
