LD43 - Two Minutes 'Til Tribute by Furtive Pygmy

[raw]
made by Furtive Pygmy for LD 43 (COMPO)

Play as 'Red Shirt Guy' as you destroy thousands of 'Flesh Demons' in a clunky Twitch Ship. Screenshot 1.png

Gain levels to upgrade your ship and face off against 'Corporate Greed', a demon made from the lust of money that is out of touch with the rest of the universe.

When the tribute time reaches 0 you will need to sacrifice an upgrade, but the gods will grant you with extra bullets and invincibility for a short while.

Controls:

WSAD - Move

LMB - Fire

RMB - Shield

Enter - Turn sound off (See 'Bug Fixes')

Note: Spacebar will reduce tribute timer to 0, this is allow you to see the boss without crushing through the game :).

Bug Fixes:

v 0.02 - Fixed issue where player was sticking to camera restrictions - Fixed issue where player could spawn outside of play area on loading scenes - Fixed issue where player could glitch into boss and instantly kill it - Added a way to turn off sound ('Enter'), not a bug but don't want to kill peoples ears

That would make a very nice mobile game.
Joke apart, it was quite fun to play. I'm glad I defeated the capitalism golgotha.

Cool game. I found you could soak up a hit and plough through all of the enemies but good use of theme. The audio was really anoying but the game overall was very polished and quite enjoyable. Nice one!

Cool idea. I like the upgrades on level up, that was a nice suprise. Also good implementation of the sacrifice mechanic. Two minor things I did not like: Sound effects are missing, which would be very nice in this genre. And the restriction of the play field feels strange. Maybe add a border graphic (some kind of force field maybe) to show the edges of the game area. Nice entry :-)

@marcellus Thanks, and grats ;)

@digitallimestone Thanks, yeah there were a few things I wanted to polish but ran out of time. Sorry about the audio, it was placeholder but ran out of time to make anything else (I ended up taking my headphones off during the jam) :(

@tomdeal Thanks, I feel your disappointments are what I wasn't happy with too. I wanted to clean up the play area and music as well as add some sound effects but didn't get around to it.

I probably spent way too much time on Object Pooling and parallax, but haven't used them before so wanted to make sure they were solid.

Neat! Game feel would improve quite a lot with some hit animation and maybe some gory monster explosion and screenshake :) Like the diablo font, where did you get it from?

Great job!It will make your game better if you make the boundaries more clear.

@marc-grabow Thanks, I might polish it and add all the goodies I didn't get time to "in-jam" at some point. Watch this space. The font is 'Exocet - Medium', I just googled it and grabbed whatever royalty free one I could ;-).

@shiqichuan Cheers! The boundaries were a bit of a let down for me, I had plans for a fog/mist effect to define it but I left it a bit late and had to cut it.

Nice little game, though I found it to be a bit easy - maybe you could give the player slightly less health?

I like the number of upgrade choices you provided, that was a nice surprise. Could also have used some very minimal sound effects.

Nice work!

@josh-bothun Thanks mate, it was one of the values I meant to change before uploading but woke up like an hour before submission hour and needed to bum-rush some code to make it playable.
Thanks again, and I'll check your game out shortly :)

@myfriendtames Thanks for playing and the compliments :)

@slizzben Cheers, I loved making him that's for sure... probably could have spent all the jam creating and animating :p

@danny-sun Thanks for the compliment :)

I was a little confused to begin with. I forced a few sacrifices in the beginning - the box doesn't appear for a second or two until after I press space, is I think what confused me! Tapped my trackpad to oblivion! (Hope it's still okay...) I liked its firing patterns. Great potential.

Edit; Oh yeah I liked the planet/moon art and parallaxing at the top of the screen.

i think overall it was pretty good but the playfield was just too big -- had a nice mood in the game

The best thing of the game was the final boss 😁. I didn't expect that so that's a good surprise. However the time before defeating enemies is a little boring. At the beggining they shoot but they stop shooting, and they are all the same enemies. I reccomend adding you different behaviours to your enemies like some of them move up and down. So it isn't so easy to shot it down and more score, etc.

Nice game! The enemies' hitboxes weren't quite right (some of my shots passes through the enemies) and the bullets sometimes just collide with the player's sprite and disappear (at least that's what I think is happening). The boss battle was really fun though and I think it would have been better to just base the whole game around the boss battle and letting it have different stages while the sacrifices try to screw with the player.

The movement is really smooth and the graphics is nice. I wish the shoot button was not on the mouse since it is its only purpose, maybe on spacebar. Also after some playing the enemies stopped shooting and thechallenge was lost.

The enemie's shots could use more contrast with the background, it was easy to not noticed them against some of the darker areas. Cool game overall.

This is a solid little game - having to repeatedly click to shoot gets a little old, but the upgrade/downgrade mechanics are interesting. Some cool pixel art, especially in the final boss battle; I liked the variety of the projectiles it was throwing at me. Nice work.

The basics of the game are definitely there. It's a straightforward game but it works. The game could use a little more punch to make it more exciting though. Explosions, sounds, smoke from the ship's thrusters etc!

Let's start with the art, which is great by the way. That's all I have to say about the art.
I feel like the time period between sacrifices is too long. Yes, you can skip to the sacrifice, but I think it'd be better if there was simply less time between sacrifices.
Then there's the lack of audio. I think the game would do better with sound, as there's the whole shooting thing.
Other than that, it's a neat entry!

This definitely gets the award for weirdest LD game that I've played this time. The shooting works well and the controls feel responsive. I like how you can upgrade the ship with extra firepower, which helps with the final boss. The levels seem a bit repetitive, so I'm glad that pressing spacebar shortcuts you to the end. I always believe that some music is better than none, but the same four notes got a little bit repetitive.
