First Ludum Dare Submit (Hackerman) by Tiberiusuciu

[raw]
made by Tiberiusuciu for LD 39 (COMPO)

hackerman.gif Hackerman is about a thief/hacker who's on a heist, but he forgot his power cord. With too much ego, he doesn't want to turn back and move on forward. He must make his way past the guard to the vault before his laptop gives up on him.

Game made for Ludum Dare#39 The theme of this game jam was: Running out of power

Made in the span of 48 hours using

The game relies heavily on trying to sneak your way past the guards. However the game is fairly easy to beat. With more time, there are definitely many ways to improve and expand on this game. This was also my first attempt at both making a video game and using Game Maker Studio.

I wish there was music, but that concept requires a lot more discipline than i have anticipated.

I am also aware that there might be a few bugs here and there that i have neglected due to a lack of time. Furthermore, I would like next time to offer more platform support than just windows  But I am happy to say that I do have a playable game when I have submitted this game!

garden statutes :D indoor

Enjoy!

Interesting but punishing as each death drops you off to the start

Do you hack slower while in sneak mode? I was holding the hack key for like 2 minutes for the first door and nothing. I turned off sneak and it worked fine, and my typing was super charged apparently.

@oxrock Thank you for playing! The hacking speed is intended to be the same regardless of sneak mode. The problem with my game is besides the subtle visual cues from the door sprite changing, there is no way to tell if the hacking is complete. As for the typing noise, I made the pitch noise change at random every time you try to hack. Maybe it wasn't a good idea since it might make you believe that you did something different.

Very great pixel art ! The game is beautiful, I really enjoy your style. Game is easy at first, but start to be quite difficult then. Maybe some checkpoints would be great for a future update !

I liked it. I think erring on the side of easy is actually good for LD. The graphics are really well done - nice use and command of your palette,

I actually had a hard time getting by some guards - you have to hide for a pretty long time before they go away.

cool game! Once I got the feel of it it was very fun. But first it was hard to understand the controls. When you hack the door and it unlocks it, I didn't notice the ball changed from green to grey, so I kept hacking for a little more and was very confused. Try making theese things clear. Making it red when its locked, and very visible, and then changing to green maybe, and a sound that makes you understand that something has happened. And making him stop hacking when theres nothing more to hack. However, it's very impressing for your first Ludum Dare! I know there's no time for perfection in short gamejams, but just try to make everything very clear for the player, and try to avoid text for tutorials. Instead of telling the player right away that he can't go through this door and that he must hack it to go through it, show "Press E" when he gets closer to the wall and then use audio and visual effects to make him see what's happening. This way he feels smart for discovering how to do it. Players want to play, not read.

I really liked the stealth mechanics, though sometimes you had to just risk it and run cause the guard wouldn't move out of the way. Maybe making them have defined paths would make would make it more interesting.

Overall, good game!

Thank you for playing!
I'm glad you like my art style, I only learned how to pixel art (or draw anything for that matter) about a month ago. I've been practicing a lot for this :^)

As for the difficulty, yes there should be some sort of checkpoints throughout the game.

Thank you for playing!
Happy to read that you enjoyed my art! Yeah the guards move at random so I can understand the frustration of waiting. Close to the end of the compo, I thought about making the guards only see you if they are facing you. But I didn't have time to implement that. Perhaps post-compo!

Thank you for playing!

This was one of my fears for this game, I was convinced that people will not get the cue of when a hacking is done due to a lack of audio feedback or simply better visual feedback. I love the suggestion you made about the tutorials because that's exactly what I had initially in mind, but due to the fact that I was running out of time and I left the UI for last, I quickly gathered up the fastest way to make the tutorials.

Sound effects are cool and artwork is also very nice. I got stuck in the part where you go up the first stairs and have to hack a switch (or whatever its called to open the door), but theres a guard there, and even if I try to hide in the plants, as soon as I get out, he detects me

Solid job on this! Some of the guards take too long to move away, making me wait a bit longer than I had hoped. (I just run and jump over him hoping I can get away with just a few HP as sacrifice.)

The art is pretty well done. The hacking animation is the my favorite of the lot. Also, it'd be cool if you made the sneaking animation more distinct than the the normal walk animation.

Really great art and well done platforming. One thing that was frustrating was that the guards could basically hit you continuously after they hit you once so it made health seem relatively useless. The reset to the beginning was also a bit harsh. I liked the hacking mechanic but I didn't get to use it much because I couldn't get passed the second door.

Really fun, but as said in comments guards are to hard and reseting player to the beginning makes game very hard.

Congratulations on your first game! Well done! Very good looking graphics and fun game mechanics!

I must say I'm not great at these kind of stealth games, but I think this game really hard. Especially that you are reset to the beginning of the game each time you die, it can be frustrating after a while.

This game was very hard! The controls seemed good enough, but hiding behind things didn't seem to make the guards go away. This made it very difficult to get past them!

Interesting concept, a bit hard I couldn't beat it and gets stuck quite fast. Maybe you could increase the invelnerability time or makes the guards a bit less aggresse, I often get stuck to them and die :/ The battery running down is a cool idea but that was never the reason I dies. Good work on visuals, keep on working the gameplay :)
