Just Ask Her Out by ciderWrath

[raw]
made by ciderWrath for LD 40 (JAM)

For my entry for the theme is a visual novel about Alex. Whenever Alex tries to ask out the girl he likes, he has a tendency to overthink and get too much anxiety, so this story illustrates his attempts to try to eventually ask her out.

Just a warning, this game is incredibly short, but every single choice in the game has their own drawings to go with them, so I recommend going back and making other choices to see how they play out. Enjoy!

The ending put a smile on my face! It was short but interesting, and the gags were quite funny.

Loved the ending and the take on the theme. I'd played around with a very similar concept during brainstorming but ditched it in the end (I became too anxious!) and I thought it would be a topic explored more often. However, yours is the first I find.

Good work!

Aww. Even though the art is rough it's really cute and expressive. It's short but I had fun going back and trying every option.

Aww man this is super cute. Your sketch style is extremely endearing, and I super appreciated how you wrote and drew independent dialogue and art for pretty much every single path (and I definitely tried to get all the paths).

Also really love the twist at the very end---you could have a *really* fun visual novel with that mechanic. Awesome stuff.

I'd wish you'd make it into a full game, coming from a seasoned VN maker like me.

Nice! I love the ending and the art is really nice. I like both art styles, the detailed polished drawings and the more cartoony ones. But I sort of wish they were used a little more deliberately. Like the detailed realistic one for representations of characters in the actual situation and cartoony ones for what is in the character's heads. It sort of played out that way, but some things seemed they should be the other one if that were so.

I like that the sketchy style on yellow background reminds me of sketches on paper in school. That was really nice.

You drew a lot of pictures in a short period of time and I like them a lot. I'm super impressed.

Wooo, thanks for the comments everyone!

@moonlightbomber You got it! I took a little break, but currently thinking up ideas of how I'm going to continue with the game. I had a lot of fun making the game and would like to keep working on it.

@bryceltaylor Glad you think that! About the different drawings, at first they were just spur of the moment of what I felt like drawing, but eventually the thought did cross my mind of I should reserve the style changes for the situations of how they were happening. I was real curious to know how others felt about that, so thanks for your comment!

That was increeeedddiiiblle writing! I ended up playing it through about 10 times to see a bunch of different options and was really impressed by the variety of scenarios you came up with. I did end up laughing (out loud) multiple times; you really have a gift for this and a strongly recommend you turn this into a full game.
Also the art was great, all the expressions really nailed the writing home.

Very nice short finished game. Drawings are nice, they all convey certain emotions, humor works, no technical problems. One of the best games I've played so far. Great job!

This was just lovely! :) Beautiful art and I loved the internal "panicking" a lot. Super sweet. :) I liked that it didn't take too long to reach an ending, that makes you want to try again, and again, and again. Congratulations!

Cool game. The structure was really effective at supporting the story. A lesser game would have probably forced the player to play through the part with the choices multiple time which could have gotten annoying fast. Also great job with the graphics.

Okay. How dare you 1) make me laugh so hard and 2) make me relive the awkwardness of high school? I was honestly taken aback by how quickly I fell into the character's POV. I know everything is rough around the edges but I really enjoyed it. It was very funny and very heartfelt. The branches were good and I did try every option just to see how things ended up.

Well done!
