You Have My Word by BauBau

[raw]
made by BauBau for LD 41 (JAM)

First Ludum Dare, the game is almost "complete"! We wanted to add more levels and stuff but time is short.

The idea of the game:

The two incompatible genres chosen are Racing and Word game. The purpose is to collect letters and deliver the requested word to the mechanic (hints on what the word are in the mechanic dialog). Like Scrabble on wheels!

How to play:

  • W A S D - Car movement 🏎️

  • E - Collect letter ⛏️

  • Space - Handbrake (upgrade) 🛑

  • Shift - Nitro (upgrade) 🚀

word.jpg

EDIT: There's one bug that needs fixing, unfortunately there was not enough time last night. Currently you have to wait for the timer to expire in order for the next round to start.

EDIT 2: Fixed the timer issue, now the round should end when all correct letters are picked up.

We plan on improving the game once rating is finished! Feedback is much appreciated! Source code soon.

Enjoy!

Nice game! I finished the final level with a full 60 seconds left on the clock though, so it would be nice if you could complete the levels early. I like the idea, the music and graphics were nice. The car controls when boosting and turning are a bit unusual, but otherwise it's great!

Nice idea, but controls are freaking hard. I guess, it would be cool to move camera when you turing around.

Well, I like the idea but have a couple of things I would like added:

-The E button feels really weird with WASD controls, maybe arrow movement or an alternative(space or mouseclick) pick up letter button

-Once all the letters are picked up, the round should end. There is no reason to wait that other 10-30 sec out after the map is completed. At first it is quite confusing.

-A pause button could be useful (or if TAB is pressed the word is shown)

Overall I like the style and the idea is great aswell!

I don't think I used the brakes ever. Thought the game was pretty fun. Should maybe end the current level as soon as they collect the correct work, and give a way to drop letters picked up by mistake. Good work on this one! Would you mind reviewing my game? https://ldjam.com/users/theartifacts/

Nice game, and it really fit the theme. Two things were weird. The first time I played i didnt notice the word, put it in bold should be clearer. And start with the car the wrong way confused me a bit. But the game is still nice! great work!

I like the idea, reminds me of a cute game to teach kids how to spell (but made nicer X)).

Nice game. I found the handling a bit difficult but I got the hang of it eventually. Overall, pretty polished!

Thanks guys! @tthe @theArtifacts the timer issue has been fixed and now the round ends when all letters are picked up. I've noted down your suggestins and we'll improve when rating is over :). Controlls will definitely improve.

@thibautpierron we will add a hint button or make it so the word is visible, thanks !

@boblova Yeah, controls are a priority once the rating is done.

@seanale I was thinking the same, with a bit of work this can turn up to be just that, but more fun. :D

@human-writes-code We'll continue to improve every aspect of the game, thank you!

@folex70 Glad you liked it ! ;)

Like @theArtifacts mentioned, an ability to drop letters would be nice, or to auto-fail the round if the combination of letters wasn't going to work.

Very fun game though. The controls took some getting used to, but once you do, they're really nice. It's a little bit of a rush drifting around a corner, or swinging the car around in reverse, and then flooring it.

Good-looking level too. The perspective, color palette, and general aesthetic works really well.

@fitz13 Thanks for the feedback! The feature to drop a letter is there, but never got to implement it :) Will do after rating is done.

Out of control with an AZERTY keyboard...
Otherwise the game seems funny and original.
Nice job !

Would have loved if we could drop letters, as requested above. As is, the game can be frustrating, especially in the learning phase. Cool concept though!

@anthony-krafft thanks for the feedback ! The feature will be implemented in the same way you pick up the letters, you go to a spot and you can delete as many as you want. I'm sure you got it the second time around ;)

This game was hard but really solid. Only feedback i could say is to make it easier for a starting level as the time limit is a little too tight. Also the car looks out of place graphics wise, little too high res in comparison to the rest. Really good work though.

Cool game. I think that the controls are semi realistic, in that you have to be moving to turn. The handbrake didn't seem to be that useful so you slow down fairly fast anyway.

Your game is really cool but the engineboost moves a little bit wired.

This was really fun! The concept was good, and the execution was well done. I liked the graphics and the controls felt really good. My only complaints were that I had a hard time navigating the menus (didn't know whether to click or press) and sometimes it was hard to tell what I could and couldn't drive through because of the camera angle. Aside from those minor things though it was a really solid entry and lots of fun to play. Great work!

The concept was pretty nice. Sometimes, the controls played with your mind and it was easy to get stuck. But, I thought the game overall was fun to play.

At first I struggled with the controls but it was pretty fun overall, the character was humorous too. Maybe you didn't have time for this but it would have been nice being able to drop the letters when you were wrong or maybe that it just failed you automatically. The art was pretty nice too.

Graphics are pretty good. Audio is even better, although the car engine could be more realistic.

I thought the car was facing "backwards" but I guess I'm just reading the image wrong. It took me a minute to realize that I can only turn if I'm moving forward/backward. Doing this with keyboard input is really awkward, and I was terrible at the game, but I bet with a driving controller or even just a gamepad I would have done better at it. I thought that letter pickups should be automatic rather than require a button press, but I guess if you have to do it in the right order, then this makes sense. But it also makes it harder, and frustrating.
