PLEASE READ: YOU CAN USE YOUR SPEAR TO PICK UP ENEMIES AND THROW THEM IN YOUR FLAMES FOR FUEL. Unfortunately I didn't have time for a tutorial for the competition.

In FURNACE KNIGHT you are a noble knight sworn to defend against the unending hordes of hell's minions. Feed the HUNGRY FLAMES with the bodies of your FALLEN FOES.

Fight off the legions using your TRUSTY SPEAR. Enemies killed with your spear can BE PICKED UP AND THROWN into the furnace to fuel the SACRED FLAMES.

If you fall in battle and the sacred flames haven't been snuffed you will be REKINDLED BACK TO LIFE *in her flames. Otherwise, you will *PERISH.

CONTROLS:

  • Movement: A/D

  • Jump: Space

  • Shoot: LMB

  • Shoot FURNACE BOLT: RMB (Consumes Fuel)

THEME:

To fit the theme of "Running out of power" I implemented the furnace and its steady decay. The player can utilize the furnace to respawn or special attacks, but this costs fuel which can only be replenished by tossing enemy corpses into the flames. The fuel also constantly decays on it's own pushing the player to act quickly and to "run out of power".

I really enjoyed it! At first I was a little confused about how I was supposed to “burn enemies” but when I realized I had tO skewer their corpses on my arrow I was like Oooooohhhhh! Really creative mechanic, having your falledn enemies become ammunition, which you then have to collect. It adds a whole new layer of depth, because not only do you have to think about shooting your enemies, but you have to think about where there body will land. Nice work!

Cool artstyle and sound effects. You could've done a tutorial in game, but that's a post jam thing :D

This game is really fun! I love the way you pickup enemies on your spear like a monster shish kebab and hurl them into the flames. The game is at its best when you are surrounded and forced to hectically spam spears for your life. I didn't really find myself using the furnace bolts too often, as spamming spears was effective enough and didn't cost anything, though it did occasionally prove useful. Still, the game has enough going to keep me constantly engaged and at the edge of my seat. Great work!

(Side note: the pitch shift on the sound effect when collecting multiple enemies is a nice touch!)

Super fun! The first time I played it the screen cut off the sides so I couldn't see the furnaces. So I spent like 10 mins running around trying to figure out how to burn enemies lol. Maybe some prompt text next to the furnace that says "Throw impaled enemies here" or something like that would help think heads like me.

So cool pixel art but hard to know exactly how to burn enemies in first time, you have to had more indication in game for that :wink:

Spearing enemies and throwing them in the fire with your spear is pretty great. That's a really good dual use of the gameplay mechanic, and is a good mechanical hook.

Cool idea, and nice art. The gameplay is very smooth. I couldn't find much reason to use any more of the map than the bottom level, since the enemies would come to me easily enough. I also had some trouble getting the enemies into the furnace. Sometimes running into them would pick them up, sometimes not, and the furnace hitbox was a little further than the screen edge, so I sometimes threw them off the screen but not quite into it.

I really enjoyed this entry, it was super satisfying to throw a whole group of enemies into the furnace at once. The general mechanic of picking up your enemies is just nice. Refining the movement and expanding the game in general will do a lot of good for it.

I appreciate a lot about this game and would love to see you work on this game further!

This game is fun!

I managed to burn 37 enemies and it is funny to see them flying to the furnace!

I maybe would have lowered a bit the platforms in order to be able to reach them with a single jump instead of double.

Great job!
