Tower of Morale by Pixetrichor

[raw]
made by Pixetrichor for LD 39 (JAM)

Tower of Morale is a game where one ventures through his own psyche to achieve what is needed for him to begin a real journey. (...even though the story doesn't actually show up until you finish all 5 levels. ...good luck with the fifth one, by the way. :))

Inside, you'll have to solve puzzles by turning on bridges and elevators that function only for a certain amount of moves after they've been turned on.

(Windows only, however. I apologize to whomever doesn't have it.)

CONTROLS: * WASD/Arrow keys - Movement (Just in case, if WASD stops working for you by any chance, I recommend you switch to Arrow keys for a bit.) * Enter - Restart/Dialogue Progression (The dialogue's for when you pass all the levels. Don't pay it too much attention while you're focused on figuring out a puzzle.)

RESOURCES: * Game Engine - GameMaker:Studio (GML) * Visuals - Aseprite * Sound Effects - BFXR * Audio Editor - Audacity

This is just me rambling. Nothing really important or vital.

(This is my 2nd Ludum Dare Jam and, I think I've improved a bit. I have been able to make animations and sound effects as well (Shame I couldn't yet figure out how to create harmony out of composing a song. Doubt I even created harmony out of the sound effects. Gut instinct tells me they're bothersome. And maybe loud. Sorry.). And this time, instead of making my puzzle game "abstract", I've focused on a more logical ruleset. ...still, I think I might've overdone it. The puzzles this time might say absolutely nothing about their rules and are just "unscramble this" at the end. ...maybe I need to balance the two factors? Also, I've gone through weirder problems this time too. My AV suddenly starting to give a false alarm on the exported files (though for me, the solution is turning off the splash screen. I didn't really need it anyway, but why that.). I've also gone through some weird bugs and I had to diagnose the code deeply by seeing what happens when I remove this, add that... And once I've gotten enough info, I exploit the problem and fix it. I've gone through this before, but certainly not on such a deep scale. And as for the story and the dialogue font, I've made them in the last 8 or so hours, and I honestly had no time polishing any of those. Also this lacks an undo button. Mainly because this didn't even come to my mind.)

WOW, EXCELLENT PUZZLE GAME MECHANIC.

Like:
- mildly juicy animations, looks like a polished game
- crisp pixel graphics
- amazing game mechanic
- yay for GameMaker!
- credits in the game background, smooth!

Try Differently:
- steep learning curve
- on my 3440x1440 screen, double or triple pixel size would have been sweet :) I love 'em chunky, you know.
- add sounds to juice it up even more

Overall:
- very innovative puzzle game
- awesome title
- works on Windows 10 just fine (gives a nasty "Windows Protected Your PC" dialog, though)

Really good game. Is there was a level reset button so that the level could be reset if you get stuck?

Great entry, the mechanic goes really well with the theme, well done. I think the 2nd level is bugged, the second switch doesn't do anything.

Oof, those sound effects were kind of grating. The graphics weren't terribly impressive. But that gameplay was really fun! I was hooked right away with the mechanics, and I saw it through to the end. Not too tough (until the fifth stage, omg watch out), and I enjoyed it.

Enjoyable core mechanic in game that has a lot of potential. The graphics are a little simplistic (although the players movement is animated really smoothly. Some music would be a huge benefit also but otherwise good job!

I like the title, going around in the game with the character making decisions.

Excellent! Nice puzzle mechanics, simple yet difficult levels, nice sound. I love when I have to draw on paper to get through a level. Good job!

Amazing game! I loved the puzzles, especially the last level. My biggest recommendation is making R reset levels instead of or in addition to enter, just so that it is more intuitive. I really liked the font for the numbers and the animation for the character was really smooth. The tiles pushing down when you jump on them was also a nice touch that made the movement feel really good. Great job!

Puzzles are solid 10/10. Sound effect for jumps was quite annoying. I'd also rather see the whole level right away instead of wasting first few attempts to do so.

An interesting puzzle mechanic. I found myself wishing your character moved a bit faster though. I didn't have an issue with the sound effects, but my speakers were also turned down low.

Like it very much. I think the sounds effects work very nicely with the overall feel to the game. I think it fits the theme very well too. The fifth puzzle, was super hard for me lol

Nice little puzzle game. I got a good experience, but couple of things made me not enjoying 100%, it is minor things thoug:
- The SFX was little noisy, so I've to must my speakers.
- The game can't restart the level with "R" button, which is the universal thing for most of the GM games. I know you can restart the level in another way, it's what i figured out later form the page here, but usually when i play a game i don't read any of the above descriptions, so i can see how friendly the game is with my gamer soul :D

Overall, good job

This is a clever little take on the theme! I really liked it. It's simple, it's smart puzzle solving and it's really fun. Add music! And make it clear that enter restarts the level, it was confusing at first. But overall this is fantastic.

Nice game, Level 4 was hard.

Note that some people won't bother too much with level passing and will give up so it is wise to implement skip level so they see all levels and end of the game.

The puzzle concept is great and clever, I truly enjoyed it. I like the minimalist art style but I was a bit annoyed by the sound effects. The level were enjoyable but the difficulty escalates quickly. Overall, good game :D

The game just feels good to play. TBH I was pretty happy with the animations and presentation even though they were simple. Nice use of the game mechanics throughout all the level design, I'm sure you had to put in a decent amount of playtime to get those all lined up. The levels that were open and gave you a lot of choices were challenging and satisfying to solve once you got it. Give my game a shot sometime, it has a somewhat similar premise in terms of limited movement puzzle.

A challenging game with nicely designed puzzles. But the sound effects get really annoying.
