WearOut by Abhis1Kadian

[raw]
made by Abhis1Kadian for LD 42 (JAM)

Yeah! We did it!!!

This was our first ever game jam, so hyped to have completed it on time. It was really an amazing experience. Had some problems at first because of the theme but still managed to think of a good idea. So to sum up, an amazing experience after all.

CONTROLS ->

A/D -> MOVE LEFT/RIGHT

W -> KICK

SPACE-BAR -> PUNCH

ADDITIONAL THINGS ABOUT THE GAME:

1. Pressing SPACE-BAR kills the enemy instantly but takes away a little bit of ur Health.

2. Ur health will regenerate itself after some time.

3. The platform can't carry more than 3 enemies at a time on it, so if the SPACELEFT reaches 0, the player will RUN OUT OF SPACE.

Nice art style!

Maybe the character could have a longer attack range? It was hard to see when you would hit someone or if they would hit you.

Would also be nice with a restart button.

And awesome intro, really set the tone :)

I am a fan of the minimalist palette and art, nice work for your 1st jam. The combat felt a bit clunky. Concept works well, but i feel you could have portrayed the space running out a bit better.

Liked the art style, and the intro was really cool! However the game was too difficult for me, I couldn't figure out how to kill those people and usually died before I managed to kill the third one.

I took a couple of attempts with this (after a considerably long wait after hitting play  ) and couldn't get past my high score of 24. :stuck_out_tongue:

![WearOut-highscore24.png](///raw/360/1/z/19aec.png)

I really enjoyed the setup of this game. You obviously tried to go for a more humourous approach, and I thought it was funny the way the story of the game was arranged. It worked well for this sort of concept, too. I like the idea of a survival defense game where you are trying to conserve space because it can only accommodate you.

The graphics, while simplistic, worked well with the sort of dark humour this game has. Nothing was super distracting or hard to tell apart from the others. A decent enough job was done here. Regarding the music, I'm assuming you didn't make it, considering you opted out of audio. Despite this, I still think it's worth thinking about how you could select music tracks that are more coherent with each other and perhaps more fitting to the type of game this is in general. The collection of tracks, even if they are not your own, can have a big impact on your game's mood regardless.

My biggest gripe with the game, unfortunately, is the gameplay itself. The controls for attacking were not desirable and would have been more suited to keys on the keyboard. There's also not really a whole lot of response within the game itself that shows clearly when your attacks affect the opponents and I didn't catch any significant differences between kicking and punching. As a result, I mostly just spam kicked until I died. It felt really inconsistent, since once you are actually within attacking distance (ie. close enough that when your character punches/kicks it could actually touch the opponent), you're more likely to lose health as you defeat them. Overall, I didn't have a great experience, which is a shame because almost everything else surrounding this game - the story, the minimalistic graphics - does have the potential to be a good basis for a fun game.

Congrats on your first game jam, and welcome to Ludum Dare. :) You managed to complete and submit a game for the first time in a game jam, so that's a pretty impressive feat.

Humor is too good! For feedback I would recommend adding something that needs skill combos because I could just hold the LMB at the front of the platform and kill all the helpless people.

@disco That makes the two of us. Yes the combat/gameplay wasn't as we had expected it to be. I guess because it was our first time using unity and C# and we didn't really have time to learn anything let alone the syntax for it.We had so much in mind for the running out theme but couldn't put that to work. We're really sorry for that but it means a lot to us that you liked some parts of the game. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers!

The intro of the game was at least as good as the one from YourPcRunOutOfSpace. Had to laugh really loud.
The art style is very neat too.
Only thing that i did not like, as the others mentioned already, the unclear hitboxes.
If you walk it is super small, but if you stand still you can kick the enemy like 5m aways and kill him easily

otherwise great game =)

I see you banked on the Humor category :P

A very nice submission, especially for the first time. If I had to offer some advice, it'd be to calibrate the collisions. They seem wonky and unreliable.

Also, sometimes because I kept clicking, my guy would keep fighting even at zero health. Now THAT is willpower!

17. Aug 2018 · 13:52 UTC
@balka @squidly @designernap @sidewalksleeper actually we had something else in our mind for the gameplay.. Like a small platform on which number of enemies fills up a weight meter and if it's full, the platform sinks.. This completely eliminates the requirement of a life meter. Though because of time constraints we had to settle for this basic gameplay idea. We'll try to update the game with what we actually thought as soon as possible. Thanks for the feedback😁

Aside from the catastrophy that is collisions and hitboxes, a few features would have made your game a lot more fun to play: more ennemy types, the possibility to kill enneies without getting hit, make it so the dash doesn't make you take more damage than you inflict. Maybe it' just that I have no skill, but after playing 10 minutes, I found out that the only somewhat right way to play is to spam the punch putton without moving.

A cool concept, that's for sure! The humor was on point, the graphics were neat, and the music was cool! I did wish there were sound effects for punching/kicking enemies though. Stuff was a bit unclear at first, maybe have the tutorial in the game. Also, I found out that you could just hold down a mouse button and stand still and basically just live forever. Maybe this could be fixed by simply making enemies come from both sides, and/or making them fight back. It fit the theme ok, but maybe to make it fit better make it so that the platform is shrinking, meaning you are constantly running out of space. Overall well done, especially for a first time!

I'm writing an review of the post jam version because the original version was bugged to the point of me not being able to even hit enemies (and also the keybinds weren't right). I like the game, the soundeffects make your attacks seem pretty strong and everything seems solid. Only problem being that it doesn't feel like there is a challenge yet: you can win by not looking at the screen and pressing W continuously. I've played up until the score 300 and there doesn't seem to be any difficulty progression yet. I think this is a huge opportunity for this game though, if the enemies get harder, have special abilities and you let the player also jump, perhaps, you can give the experience a bit more complexity. Anyway, good job on finishing this game! Keep working if you like :)

Hi there, I tried your game on request. Here's what I have experienced:

1. The description is incorrect. You don't use W to kick or Space to punch. It's left and right click, at least for me.
2. I started kicking enemies when it seemed appropriate, say at 0.5 meters distance, but that would get me hurt all the time. Also, some enemies would be impervious to any and all of my attacks.
3. At that point I started simply continuously clicking both the left and right mouse buttons and I started defeating all of the enemies without any trouble. When I got to score 100 I was bored, and I gave up playing, as it didn't look like the game would get any harder.
4. I saw your clouds in game teleport. It seems to me that you are moving their transform. You should have scrolled the x axis on the UV of the texture instead. Something like material.mainTextureOffset = new Vector2(Time.deltaTime, 0f); would probably have worked.

All in all, unfortunately, you have a broken game that is easily exploitable with very little incentive to keep playing it.

![24.png](///raw/31a/91/z/1a58a.png)

I really like the programmer art of the game, the music was lovely too. I wish I could have done some simple animation like that in my game LMAO. The introduction was very strong in humor, that I built up my expectation for the game. However, the gameplay was too simply and didnt quite match up with the strong introduction you gave. I was basically standing near the spawning point and spamming W until I get a nice looking score LOL. I think you guys have a very good start. Making a game more challenging is always easier to do than making it less challenging. Great job on putting it all together!

Funny idea, especially because I hate Titanic. Anyways, kinda endless since you can simply spam "W" or the mous button and you´ll be fine. Still a grad idea, a slider to change the volume would be very useful. Graphics reminded me of the "stickmen" series which was present in many browsergames some time ago.

I don't know, maybe something is wrong with HTML5 build, but I just moved a bit to the right and kept pressing W key, killing one enemy after another, without any difficulties or space running out. Maybe something happens later, but then the pace is too slow. Unfortunately, I can't try the Windows build, because I'm on Mac. But I like the idea and theme match!

Congratz on your first LD game. I feel it's necessary though to give some constructive but blunt feedback here. Overall, I personally have churned out some Ludum Dare games that are far, far worse than this game. The difference was that people told me at the time, and ultimately I learned more from those than I did from the "amazing game!" comments.

I dug the graphics and the general mood of the intro, good job on that! If you made the music (description doesn't say), then good job on that, too. Heck, even if you didn't, good job on choosing it.

The game, however, is beyond basic, to the point where I wondered if maybe that was part of the joke. You shoe-horned the actual theme of this Ludum Dare onto it by displaying that "ran out of space" message, but that's not really the same as making a game about the theme. To be fair, there are countless entries that consciously decided not to follow the theme, that's perfectly fine. It did feel a bit dishonest in this case though.

This puts people who want to rate the game into a tough spot. On the one hand, you want to welcome and encourage people who clearly put effort and thought into this. On the other hand, in an atmosphere where even Compo games are judged exactly as harshly as Jam games, one has to reflect the reality that this is in fact a Jam game, and a Jam game that has already been silently patched no less (with no comment from the maker about this) post-Jam.

Finally, what brought me here, is you @abhis1kadian - or rather your review style. I know for a fact that you didn't play my game, yet you rated it and commented on it. Looking at your tremendous but ultimately content-less engagement style on other games and blog posts, I suspect this may have happened more than once. I want to remind you that other people invested time and effort into their games as well, so not only is it ethically appropriate to actually look at their work, it will enable you to make better comments (and may even ultimately broaden your own gamedev horizon).

Again, I'm sorry to put it this bluntly, especially since all the comments in this thread are more positive. Please don't take this as a discouragement.

Funny intro, nice graphics and sound but the gameplay was a bit lacking. You could maybe have the level be sloped so you slide towards them, .. something like that. Also I didn't really feel muy blows connecting and didn't even see them hitting me.

Graphics and audio feel great! I would suggest next time work more on the gameplay aspect though. I can spam W and kill all enemies without taking damage. Also, adding 1/2 enemy types can make this game a lot more fun.

Hey nice job for a first shot. I really liked playing with stickman =), graphics and animations were great, music too, a little loud by the way. the hitbox was not accurate enough for me, i had to do 2 tries to understand how it worked. i would like to see the ennemies coming faster and faster during the game. But it was a really cool idea =). The introduction was a little long for me, but i'm just lazy ahah, but it was a nice idea to implement a plot =)

Good job guys, keep it up

Congrats on finishing your first game jam! Good job!
The music was great and the graphics were special, good decision on going with black and white.
I also figured out that you can just go to the far right and spam kick and basically get an infinite score, you can probably fix that somehow :)
I really liked the intro!
To be honsest I didn't really understand what the space button did and why it didn't reduce from the SPACE counter.

I really liked the music in the main menu, it reminded me a little bit of Fallout & Cup Head
The introduction was also nicely done. I enjoyed the graphical style throughout the game.
However, the sprite of the enemies seemed kind of odd, like it didn't fit into this world.

And unfortunately, I have to say that the game lacked a lot in terms of gameplay. This aspect of the game really requires some advancements and polishing. I just kept spamming **W key** and got bored after a while :slight_frown:

After all, congratulations on finishing your first Ludum Dare game! No one said it will be easy to create a game in 72 hours, but you managed to do this, so good job!

I liked the introduction and story-telling, even though I was not able to make myself comfortable for the actual gameplay because 1. your controls lack something to prevent the player from spamming only one attack and 2. the graphics of enemies and player don't seem to fit the astonishing background.

Because of that I have to criticize your game in terms of mood and graphics but still, the rest and especially the interpretation of the theme was really good!

You did great for your first jam. The history and theme were really well done, the initial cutscene was really fun. The gameplay needs more polishing, it is hard to understand the results of our attacks, but it is a jam afterall, every game needs more polishing. Nice entry, congrats!

Funny dialogue during the cutscene "running out of space" lol. Good job on a first jam but the balance could've used some tuning since I mostly spammed w on the right edge of the screen and did fine.

Hi! As promised, I played your game. In terms of theme, I enjoyed the idea and I'd like to see what kinds of improvements could be made to make it even better. The art was better than anything I could have produced, so you definitely have that going for you! Music is pretty good, could use some flavoring. Humor is decently on point, I'd like to see a version that really hits the funny bone though. My only concern about your game is the mechanics. All I did was mash the W key, and it was virtually impossible for me to lose. Having some sort of variety to the combat would make this one of my favorite entries. Congratulations on completing your first entry, I look forward to seeing what you'll present to the world in the future! (Alex of CCGD)

The game was good and fun but felt a little easy. Could be improved by enemies comming from both sides or something. Other than that it was really fun running around kicking people :D. The artstyle is great and I really love the humor, the intro cutscene was hilarious lol. The music was good too and it fits well with the style and the gameplay. Good job!

The story was very funny. Does the quit button on the start menu not do anything?

At first, I kept running out of health too fast, but I realized that's cuz I tried moving. If you stand in place and keep kicking, your score just keeps going up, even without hitting a red guy, and it becomes like a clicker game. ![kick.PNG](///raw/7d9/91/z/1a78c.png)

I really appreciated that the water and clouds were animated, and the storyline. Good game!

Hey nice entry! Cute / funny intro. I like the simple animations. I think that something that could have made the combat more engaging would have been to add in a stamina meter. Right now spamming 'w' seems to be the best strategy to get a high score. A stamina meter where kicks cost more and punches cost less would have encouraged the use of punches. That said I think the range on the punches was a little to short maybe? Anytime I tried to use a punch I pretty much died because you can't kill the enemy before it damages you. Which leads into my last critique of the combat which is that the bad guys would be significantly improved if they had an actual attack instead of just they kill you if they touch you. At that point you can get in close to the enemy and as long as you are fast you can kill them before they damage you. As it is right now you just can't do that. Again, all of this basically leads to, why bother moving, just stand here and press 'w'. Outside of specifically combat, having enemies come from the other side would have also at least provided a reason to turn around and justify your movement options.

Cool visual style, distinctive! Sets the mood.
Gameplay wise I was able to just stand in one spot an kick infinitely and succeed, so that needs some tweaking.

Ideas for improvement:
- Add some 'good guys' to the enemies, so you cannot spam kicks
- Add some diversity to the opponents, some that need to be kicked, others punched.
- It was mentioned I was on a small thing, yet my playground is the full screen width? Perhaps do something with that idea

Not really following the rules... You kick with w and punch with space, but when you punch - you actually loose life... And what does counter named "space" do on the right? That's going down when they get off the screen?

Game as such is very repetitive and kinda boring after 60s of playing, although with few smart design decisions it can change dramaticaly i.e:
- remove punch and add ability to jump - while you not kicking - your health goes up but 'space' goes down
- randomize more enemies occurence

by doing that you give player an interesting choice - lose life or lose space and lose game?

Of course this is small change and change gameplay completely, and there is plenty of such changes that can improve your game here :)

Overall story was pretty nice and i really liked simplicity of your art and black & white color choice :)

Keep it up - next entry will for sure be better!

* Quite unique interpretation of theme
* My favorite artstyle! Minimalistic + stickman, really enjoy it!
* Why you opt-out music? Its great for first jam game!
* Cool intro. Firstly I think that you will miss Humor, but intro change my opinion.
* Gameplay pretty simple, but cazual players should like it.
* Great font, can you share .ttf file?

Cool setting and a different take on running of out space. Mechanics are a tad temprimental, sometimes the attack works and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe it's just hard to tell when to attack, not sure. Good jam anyways!

Nice idea and nice use of the theme ! the music work perfectly with the game.
You said that the platform can't carry more than3 enemies but sometimes there were 4 or 5 and nothing happened. More, the health should regenerate after a time but never happen too. Did I miss something ? ^^'

I think you improve the difficulty, we can stay in a position and just spam W to win without using space or lose lives.

Concerning lives, I love the concept of losing lives either on enemies and by using space, quite unique use of the theme/life system.

I like your minimalistic art style, Great job overall :)

I like the story, feels like a titanic sort of thing (at least at first), the only complain i have (and i see this mentioned above me) is that you can simply turret and spam W without any repercussion, thus making space/a/d honestly useless which is a shame because I liked the balance between space and lives. One other nitpick, is on the animation side, make the "extended kick" model the same as the hit box, even if the character would deform for that 1-2 frames imo it would've given the hits way more "umph" and feel more powerful. Good job as your first completed jam, i hope to see more of your games :D

Descent idea for a game but poorly executed. My advice is to focus on the core game mechanics over everything else. The only mechanic in this game is hitting the enemy, which is fine, but it is unbalanced. I could just stand there and kick constantly forever racking up points- not exactly fun :/ . The page says the platform can only hold 3 enemies but that's not in the game. That's a shame because that could have made this game a little more interesting. Also I noticed a bug: You can't hit enemies if you are to the far left of the platform (Happens in html5 & Windows versions).

Hi @Abhis1Kadian I really liked the Storytelling at the beginning and the great music! The graphics weren't bad at all and gave a great mix of retro but simplistic art style. The game on the other side lacked a bit in gameplay, I was a bit disappointed. Nevertheless great game and solid 4 stars.

29. Aug 2018 · 17:20 UTC
The intro is great. I loved the humour, and the graphics weren't too bad either. Sadly, it's the actual gameplay that's the problem. After a little initial confusion, during which I lost three of my five hearts somehow, I realised that I could just stand near the right-hand side of the screen and just hammer the W key until I got bored.

There's not much of a game here at the moment, to be honest. I can see what you were going for: a beat-em-up game where you're frantically knocking enemies off a platform to keep it from overcrowding and collapsing. But at the moment, it's too basic and a little unintuitive - I believe I saw you mention in a response that you could click the left or right mouse buttons to increase your attack range, which isn't listed in the controls.

From reading the reviews, though, it looks like you're aware of the gameplay issues and you're planning to update it at some point to improve the experience. Don't let the negative feedback get you down: this game has good potential, it just needs more work than you were able to get done in 72 hours. No shame in that! Keep working on it, take people's feedback into consideration, and I hope to see you back next game jam with an even better (and equally-funny) entry!

Neat game! I really liked the black / white / red art style and the stickmen characters. Some more "power" could have been added to the punches and kicks, as they felt quite weak. This can be done through better sound effects or visual effects such as screenshake. It was also a bit too easy and repetitive, perhaps it would be better if enemies came from both sides instead of just one? Story was very humorous and creative. Music was great and overall I really liked the game, good work! :)

Graphics were solid, and the humour was alright, but the gameplay is a bit lacking. I'm not sure if it's a webGL-specific thing or not, but the enemies basically just came in a solid stream, were incredibly easy to dispatch, and didn't seem to weigh down the platform any unless they reached the left side of the screen, which only appeared to be possible once I was dead. The winning technique was to sit in one place and mash W the entire time, which was...rather boring.

Still, neat idea and take on the theme!

this game's got a unique visual flair to it that i haven't quite seen in other ldjam games, and the story was solid and wonderfully fit with the theme. good job!

most of my thoughts about the game are pretty much what's already been said; since there wasn't really any diversity with how enemies showed up, you can cheese a big high score by sitting in one place and mashing the attack key constantly.

This game has a pretty good concept and some good game design. I like the intro as well- thought it was funny.

However, I feel like you could improve the player's attacks. There seems to be no reason to use a punch since all the enemies take two kicks to kill. My strategy was just to spam kick- which gets old quick. You might want to make enemies get stronger over time, or add more ways to play besides just kicking repeatedly.

The concept is nice, however i managed to reach 200 points without losing any hearts just by hammering W. The soundwork in the game is very interesting and fits the theme as well, but i found the graphics a little to simple. Maybe if the game went in the direction of some kind of beat em up in a raft it would be more interesting. However, i understand that with the time limitation of the jam, too many features may result in not being able to deliver the game in time.

04. Sep 2018 · 15:37 UTC
The concept and the idea are pretty good. The graphics and music are enjoyable as well. However I could not have a lot of fun with this game since simply hammering W is enough. Simply making enemies spawn from both sides of the platform would have made the game much more enjoyable, while still be logical with the context of people trying to board the platform...

However do not be discouraged by what I just said ! I don't want people to feel bad, I just try to make comments that suggest some improvements with constructive critisism (I think they are much more interesting than just "this is fun !"). Anyway, keep practicing, keep participating to game jams, you can only get better this way ! Have a happy gamedev carreer !

I love it!
Very simple one button game, but a GREAT presentation, VERY polished, the intro with the different tableaus, then the fighting stage with animated background and everything, a morbid theme, good music, crude stick figure drawings, very well done!!!

The only thing that you should improve is the actual game mechanics, i could basically survive without end because i could just kick so fast that noone could ever touch me.
So you should send the others in in a kind of waves to make it more difficult and to give a sense of progression, and to have some ppl that need more than two kicks.

It looks very solid overall. HAs a very tight graphical presentation, fluid animations and even a little intro video with some humor that sets up the game very well. I do have to say however, I didnt figure out how to lose space until I just let a few guys pass, so perhaps this needs some incentive for the guys to actually pass as more often then not, I just die. Overall, solid and easy to grasp, well done!

The humorous approach was fun, but the game itself is pretty repetitive: I just stood on the right spamming the W key and felt like I could have gone on forever. I also didn't see the life replenishement you talked about, if it is there, it's not fast enough.
