Prog-Jet vs Guardians by Bismark

[raw]
made by Bismark for LD 42 (JAM)

It's over ... but not as much as I would have liked.

Prog-Jet Title Screen.png

The gameplay currently proposed does not exploit all the intrinsic wealth of the code already in place. And as usual, I missed time to worry about sounds and music. A little more "polish" would not have displeased me either. But at least it's playable ... and replayable :-)

Any resemblance to a film released in 1982 is not due to an unfortunate accident ... No pixel was hurt during the realization of this game.

During the game, you can use : * [Q] & [D] (on AZERTY keyboard layout), or [A] & [D] (on QWERTY keyboard layout), or [left arrow] & [right arrow] to turn respectivly to left and right (at 90 degree at middle of the next cell) * [1] (on alphapad or numpad of your keyboard) to activate/desactivate CAPACITOR effect (if it's enough loaded) to accelerate your "Prog-Jet" (and increase scoring rate) * [2] (on alphapad or numpad of your keyboard) to activate/desactivate RESISTOR effect (if it's enough loaded) to do nothing special for now (except increase scoring rate) * [3] (on alphapad or numpad of your keyboard) to activate/desactivate GROUND MASS effect (if it's enough loaded) to remove a part of queue of the "Prog-Jet" trail (and increase scoring rate) * [4] (on alphapad or numpad of your keyboard) to activate/desactivate "STAR" effect (if it's enough loaded) to increase scoring rate, and also allowing to terminate the game with nice bonus added to your score, only if "STAR" effect stays activated until its full discharge

Be carefull at "guardians" ... they don't appreciate your presence in the "Grid" ; they hunt your light wall trail, trying to destroy it ... with the ground cells in the vicinity of their attack ! Thus, each their attacks make less space for your motions !!!

Well done. Good graphics and a good play on the tron game. How you snap over when turning was a bit disorienting though.

Well Programmed game! I have always been a fam of the light cycles from TRON. The feel is a bit rough and it took me a sec to get used to it. Other than that good job!

Thank you @zachw136 ... for "disorienting" after turn ... it's a few like in the 82' movie.
Thanks @parkerduncan : after seeing the film when it was released (and yes, I'm not very young any more), I became addicted to computer science (programming and games - go know why ;-)

Wow! This looks cool. "TRON" styled.
It takes a while to understand the game. The turns are very rough... i did not realize for few tries on whats exactly happening.
Still cool game though.. :)

Nice game. The graphics are simple, and cool.
But I feel it misses a bit of precision when there is a turn. I had to adjust the timing to turn at the expected moment.

It will look cooler with some music and sound effcts.

Nice one overall.

need some work on camera it's difficult to play when the camera don't rotate.

The camera is a little confusing when you have to turn, gut it's an interesting project (I've always been wondering what playing this game would be like)

cool game, a bit disorienting at first like other mentioned that the camera just snaps into position and that turns only happen on a fixed grid. with those fixed and increasing speed it has potential :)

A little bit difficult with camera rotation but it's a good game! Reminds me TRON :-) ! Great work!

Didn't work for me :( Maybe my computer (iMac mid 2015) is too slow for it (I tried WebGL build in Chrome).

Always liked TRON, so this game was must-play for me :D As said before, you need to smooth camera rotation, and I had some troubles determining cell I will turn to, it seems like turning takes place at old bike position. Also you could speed up gameplay a little

The camera was a bit disorientating, a smooth camera would have been better for sure.
It also seemed that the bike was turning based on it's last cell rather than it's current one.
But the game looked cool and I thought it was interesting.
Not bad at all. I think the idea has potential.

For fans of Tron (original movie), use this link for a good music (like Flynn's home) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhhmtBOmosA

I hope you can play the game on your mac.

Looks good, but definitely needs cinemachine (and no latency in inputs)

A nice variation on a classic.

The camera lagging a little after your input to turn is a bit disorienting, but overall the game is quite well done.

Super I love the atmosphere tron, it is pretty well transcribed, against the camera that turns suddenly it's weird, and it lacks effect and sound when I pass on a bonus we have not feeling like interacting with anything is a shame.

Took a bit of time to get used to, but once it's uniqueness was allowed to shine, it was pretty fun. The pace seems a bit slow, but once you figure out the powerups it starts to flow nicely :)

I played didn't like it, sorry. This is tron and there no gameplay. I played the song you linked but i liked pirates of the caribbean more so I played that while i was playing.

Anyway you made some parts very nice!

I don't really get it... The point isn't clear, the bike is very slow, and turning is very imprecise. I tried to get the turning timer down but I just can't manage to turn when I want to. If I press right, I want to turn right on the next square, not the one I am currently on or the next one. Look at how Snake handles this kind of movement. The camera is also jarring and needs to be more advanced than simply parented to the bike. Sorry for being very negative, but there is a lot to work on. However as you said it is very playable.

The camera snap was really disturbing and I couldn't really understand what to do in the game. But a good effort!

I've never been a fan of the movie but I've certainly know of this scene from it.

There was a bit of a lag somehow (camera and inputs?) so that's a shame. Also it would have been great if the speed increased with time or something. Also, check out the canvas elements, they overlapped in the webgl build and couldn't really know if they were charged or not :\

Too slow and with no clear goal. The technic behind it is interesting though !

The game is way too slow. This may be fun at higher speed but not in it's current state.
A continuous camera rotation would be a great addition.
The graphics are good. I didn't hear any sound.

Camera turn movement should be more better than this. The idea is pretty cool though. Graphics was also good.

I thank you for your opinion about the management of the camera and the "position" during turns, as well as the problem of non-repositioning action icons during the "screen resize" in WebGL.

These few bugs have been fixed, and an increase in the Prog-Jet motion speed has been made.

Post-Scriptum : better rendering with standalone versions (Windows 32 or 64 bits, Mac OS-X) than in WebGL.

Cool game! I like how you need to consider where you put your walls in order to have the best opportunity to get to the power-ups. I found the speed to be a bit too slow and enjoyed it a lot more when I used the capacitor. Good take on the theme with the walls and the guardians breaking the environment! Good job!

Nice job ! fedback after a first run on a laptop between two code sessions : The camera movement is pretty disturbing during the first seconds but it become cool after a while... And it's totally in the mood of the non inspired 1982 movie ! Can it come from the input lag ?

Neat little Tron-like game. The camera snapping on the turns is a bit disorienting, as others have mentioned. Loved the art and UI style.

Excellent lightcycle game! With some sound effects, and maybe some extra abilities for the power-ups, I think this'd be one of the best out there. It really captures the feeling from the original TRON, both in terms of the lightcycle maneuvering itself, and in how utterly *disturbing* Recognizers are. Having them destroy the play area is both a neat new gimmick, *and* a great use of the theme.

Great work!

Reminded me of Tron. The camera rotation was a bit strange and let me disoriented and confused some times. The application of the theme was great. Don't know if it's a bug or something, but my game ended suddenly.

Classic Tron, of course. Looks familiar! ;) This concept for a game goes way back to the old days too, but it's definitely fun to see it in a 3D format, especially with the additions of the player abilities. Nice entry!!

It looks cool but I'm having a hard time figuring out what's happening. And for a Tron homage you must have sounds & music!

Being a tron fan this appealed to me! I liked the idea of "collecting" the squares. My biggest piece of criticism would be the turn-mechanic because I felt lost as the camera warped 90 degrees. I would suggest LERP-ing the camera so yo don't feel teleported :) Nice work!
